Team Foundation

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) entered the world of professional cycling in 2001 with telecom giant Tiscali. In their first year in the sport they were able to win the Tour de France king of the mountains classification with Laurent Jalabert. Then in the following year, 2002, Team CSC-Tiscali went into Italy and finish 2nd overall in the Giro with American Tyler Hamilton. However, Tiscali was unhappy with the new ownership for moving the team to Denmark, so they left cycling behind making CSC is the head sponsor for the next 5 years.

As the top primary sponsor for the 2003 season, CSC named Hamilton team leader with one goal in mind, to win the Tour de France. But that goal was short lived as Hamilton crashed on Stage 1 and lost a bunch of time. Even after a strong come back in the mountains, Hamilton couldn't gain enough time back and finish 4th overall. At the end of the season Hamilton transferred teams, leaving CSC with huge need for a new leader.

That hole has filled by Ivan Basso and Carlos Sastre. In the 2004 Tour de France, CSC had a very successful Tour. Basso won a mountain stage and reached the podium in Paris. In fact, CSC's efforts in the 2004 TdF were even made into the cycling movie called Overcoming.

At the start of 2005 season financial problems hit the team hard. Many riders were forced to take pay-cuts. However, this was the strongest year yet for CSC. They won three stages in the Giro d'Italia, one by David Zabriskie and two by Basso. In heartbreaking fashion though the overall victory of the Giro escaped Basso when he was beset by a stomach ailment. CSC extended their sponsorship with the team until 2008 after Team CSC won the 2005 ProTour. This enabling Riis to renew the contract with Basso for an additional three years.

In 2006, the main focus was to win all three Grand Tours. Ivan Basso rode both Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, and Carlos Sastre went to the Vuelta a España. Team CSC surprised everyone by announcing that Sastre would ride the Giro as helper for Basso, thus making Sastre ride all three Grand Tours. With Carlos help Basso dominated the mountain top finishes and won by the Giro by a margin of 9'18''. His quest to the Tour de France was cut short after an apparent involvement in the Operación Puerto doping scandal. Sastre took over as captain but a poor final time trial making him finish 4th overall. Basso was still under doping restrictions when the Vuelta came around so Carlos Sastre took the reins again. Again coming in 4th. Sastre had raced in the past 5 Grand Tours leading Team CSC to back-to-back Pro Tour Championships.

In 2007, Riis had no choice but to leave the team because of leaked doping scandals broke out around him. Ownership went into the hands of Balaverde, a new and upcoming manager. But he was very inexperience and unorganized. He transformed the team into a young squad with the help of the 2007 Cycling Draft. Out were the old faces of Sastre and Basso. His plans for the future put the old Team CSC up in smoke. The team failed to get close to any Grand Tour wins and the team finished 16th overall in team standings. After 2 great seasons (2005 and 2006), CSC had hit rock bottom. They eventually ended up dropping their sponsorship and were replaced by Ferrari.

In 2012, Team CSC was brought back to life in hopes of completing what they started in 2005, to win all 3 Grand Tour in 1 year. To help them with there goal, CSC brought in Orbea. Orbea is the best racing bike manufacturer in Spain. Also Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) pledged their support to the program by providing money to the team as well and Carvalho Customs is in charge of putting our team in a quality custom made jerseys each season.

The resurrection of an elite cycling team was going to be difficult as CSC-Orbea finished 22nd in the CT division in their reboot season. Leaders Igor Anton and Rui Costa did everything they could but in the end it just wasn't good enough, by a lot. The ultimate goal of winning all the GTs in a single season had to be put to be put on hold for a while as promoting become the new main obstacle.

Thinking about promotion quickly evaporated into a straight up fight for survival in 2013. The team put all their money on Spanish climber David Abal and he couldn't deliver the goods. Then lackluster performances from Igor Anton, Rui Costa, and Sergio Barrio sealed the team's fate; a relegation spot at the end of the season. But, due to remarkable circumstance of abandoning and promoting teams, Team CSC-Orbea was able to keep their PCT licence. While on the bright side, CSC received a wildcard and got to race in the Tour de France once again.

It's now time to prove our worth and show that we belong in this division because we aren't going to be given a second chance this time around in 2014.

Wow, Top 5 Team Standings? Someone is going to have a busy transfer season Pfft I assume Maksimov returning was a big decider in that!

@Valv: Go big or go home. Pfft Maksimov is most likely on his way out the door because of PCM13 over tweaking the hilly/mountain AI. I don't think the "Russian Rocket" stands a chance with his weak secondary stats. But, if his wage drops drastically I might consider keeping him.

It's the targets I want to bring in that will determine if I can achieve a top 5. The key is getting enough depth to score points consistently.

Seems like we'll meet each other quite a few times (already got 3 mutual goals of which 2 are exactly the same), so i'm guessing we'll be focusing on similar races.

Good luck with the upcoming season!

@Kami: Just great, just what I wanted to hear. Rolling Eyes But, good luck to you too. Looks like we will be seeing a lot of each other it seems. Wink

@SN: Who, Intxausti? I'm not scared of him. Pfft Ricco, yeah... let's hope he doesn't take a gigantic pay-cut to remain in the PCT.
With my plans we should get a nice Spanish climbing rivalry started.

@TMM: I don't care as long as you leave a top 5 for the best current Spanish cobbler in the "man-game" world... Mr. Marcos Altur. Pfft

Roman Maksimov Speaks Out Against Team PrivatBank

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/2013/MakFlags_zpsf9906ac2.jpg

Madrid, Spain - The local media staked out at Team CSC-Orbea's HQ this afternoon to interview their Russian sprinter Roman Maksimov after new police reports were made public. The reports link his former team Privatbank through their CEO Dubilet in burning down his house in Russia a few months ago.

Here is what the Russian Rocket had to say as he was exiting the facilities.

Have you heard the news? What are your thoughts on the matter?

Yes, Mresuperstar has just informed me about the police reports. To be honest, I'm disappointing, angry, frustrated, and if there is enough evidence I will be pressing charges. I still can't believe PrivatBank did this to me. It's appalling.

Does this eliminate a possible return to PrivatBank next season?

Personally, I don't want to go back. But, ultimately that is up to the team.

Does that mean you have re-signed with Team CSC-Orbea?

I can't comment on renewals at this time. Come on, you guys know that.

I don't understand why you ride orbea bikes instead of cervélo? Can you explain this please?

Can you explain this please?

They are our secondary sponsors and helped get the team running in 2012.
And if I recall correctly Cervélo was sponsoring another team at that time.

Maksimov has always been an interesting character.

It certainly matches how he performs on the bike... Smile
