Welcome to the 2014 Tro-Bro Léon, the third edition of the race in the Mangame. Like in previous years, we will see the best cobblers in the continental division battle for victory on the roads of Brittany, France.
It may not be sure that this one will be for the classic specialists; just 3.9 kilometres of cobbles means this is an open race, one that a sprinter could also win. however, the cobbled finish means that any sprinter wanting to win would have to be decent on the terrain.
Last year, on the same course, it was Vitaly Buts that took a surprise victory as the break stayed away and held off the stronger cobblers. It would be a major surprise if that happened again though.
Onto the favourites for this years race. I'll split them into the two types of rider here: Cobblers and Sprinters.
Cobblers
The biggest riders in the division on the bumpy roads are all here. De Haes, Joseph and Ostergaard meet again and are the biggest favourites to triumph here for their teams. It's hard to separate them with them all having very similar strengths.
Alternative, maybe weaker options are Altur, Lebris, Takenouchi, Roulston who could all finish high up if the race is tough. Even further back there are the likes of Hamilton, Stevenson, Gavenda, Stake Laengen and Paiani who will hope for a hard day where they could get a good result.
Sprinters
There are two types of sprinters here; one type includes fast men that will try to last the cobbles with lesser stats there and use their speed to finish high up. The likes of Rowe, Drapac, Vingerling and Peeters all fall into that category, albeit with the latter two maybe a bit more suited to the cobbles.
Other riders in this category could be Ranneries, Sinner, Clavero, Poulhies and Gajek who could all be in with a shout of a good finish if the cobbles don't have a major effect on the race, and they can hold onto the better cobblers.
The other type of sprinter here is more of a hybrid between a cobbler and a sprinter. Probably the biggest threat of these is Farrar, who combines cobbling ability with the speed of some of the fastest sprinters. Guys like Aulas, Rathe, Matzka and Dupont could also prove to be contenders.

Oh I love that screenshot so much...
Though he didn't hold off the strongest cobblers in the break last year. A group of favourites joined the break, but Buts outsprinted them
Anyway I would not be surprised if something similar happened again, the low amount of cobbles is ideal for a break as favourites may struggle to create a gap with worse riders causing the peloton to speed up for a short time before almost stopping...
Also if the AI helps a mass sprint would be very much possible...

Hope the team can blow the race apart on the short cobbles. maybe some win would help. Ranneries has a shouting chance at a top 10 if that doesn't work out.

Believe in my French guys, but expect Steven Tronet to be the stronger one. Anyway, more than a top15 would be surprising.

Looking forward to this race as my cobble specialists have been in great form lately. However, i know how unrealistic it would be to expect a similar result again.
In the end I hope for a mass sprint but i know that the AI is sometimes a bit messed up on those stages (everyone who has played Gent-Wevelgem on PCM knows that )

It's just hopeless. Our man in the break wasn't that strong. We should have kept pacing in the peloton. Really disappointing to come out of this with nothing.
We will be last in the CT at the end of the year if we can't even place in classics.

Very glad that my team could get into that decisive break. I have the feeling that they do not join those attacks often but when they succeed my guys tend to be in there. It could be worse
(talking only about one day races that is)

Hooray! Great race for us with Gene taking the win and Farrar strong getting 11th, 2nd in the mass sprint. Really proud to get a win on the cobbles with my Americas only team, and at the same time getting a French win.

Gratz to Gene and Azteca, impressive performance the finishing kilometres!
First result this season for Stéphane Poulhiès, 6th spot is more than satisfying.
Thanks for reporting, was an entertaining read, FroomeDog!

Well, what can I say. I'm more than happy to get a top 10 considering my (nonexistent) cobble squad, once again seemed to be in the right break at the right time. The mechanics are still quite broken, to be honest though. That being said I'll take this any day of the week!
BREAKS OP

Sarah Palin, 08-03-14 (CPAC, on Russian aggression) : "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a nuke is a good guy with a nuke"
Big thanks to jdog for making this AMAZING userbar!
