Today’s stage is a fairly short 148km, but what a stage is crammed into that space! Almost the entire day is either climbing or descending and none of it is easy. So here are the five categorised climbs which we have on offer today:
Cormet de Roseland – 19.3km @ 6%
Col des Saises – 15km @ 6.4%
Col de l’Aravis – 11.5km @ 5%
Col de la Colombiere – 11.7km @ 5.8%
Col de la Pierre Carree – 21.1km @ 6.3%
So the final climb of the race is an absolute monster, coming in at over 20km and with ramps of over 10%. Most of the hardest climbing is near the start or around the middle with the gradient tapering off a bit towards the top. Regardless, after a day like this one and after three excruciating weeks this is going to be a challenge. Not only that but we have a fair bit of wind which will batter the riders as they climb.
The first attack of the day comes from Jocelin Maillet, one of the more active riders in the race so far. This is certainly a day for him, particularly because he already has 70 mountain points from previous breaks. There are 88 mountain points on offer out there.
Other riders looking to get away are:
Samuel Dumoulin
Johan Tschopp (5 points)
Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg (3 points)
Omar Fraile
Jonathon Castroviejo (47 points)
Remarkably, without any fight, the bunch lets them get away. The pack clearly doesn’t want to force the pace too high on the Cormet de Roseland, which isn’t surprising given it is the second hardest climb of the day.
Tschopp goes over the top of the HC climb in first with Maillet in second and Castroviejo in third. This puts Maillet on 86 points, 40 short of Van der Velde’s total.
Back in the pack some riders attack to mop up the remaining points. Van der Velde is not amongst them, clearly too tired after yesterday. Augustyn takes 5 points and Nepomnyachsniy takes 4. In fact these two haven’t got that many points but they continue their attack over the top – could they in fact be aiming at a stage win here? Ignatiev also attacks but he can’t hold the pace of these two riders and has to try to advance solo. His 3 points brings him up to just 9 points short of the mountain jersey.
The gap back to the peloton for the break is at 8’40” at the base of the Col des Saises. This is shorter if slightly steeper than the Cormet de Roseland but it is only category one. The same three riders take the major points at the top of the climb – Tschopp takes the 16, Castroviejo the 12 and Maillet the 10.
The gaps over the top are as follows:
2’33”
6’35”
4’24”
13’32”

On the descent of the Saises Duarte falls. He manages to get back but this is still a disappointing way for him to cap off an altogether unreliable race.
Next up we have the Col de l’Aravis. It is the both the shortest and least steep climb, but it certainly isn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination. The pace up front slows just a little bit as they realise how big the gap is. This means that Nepomnyachsniy and Augustyn are able to catch up to our break to create a lead group of 8. There is 70km to go and the lead is now out to about 14 minutes.
Nepomnyachsniy attacks for the points at the summit and Augustyn follows. It is an odd move given that neither of them have a lot of points. Either way that is how they go over, with Tschopp leading the rest of the break and Maillet taking 8 more points. Maillet needs to score 24 more points to take the jersey and with only two climbs left in the race it is going to be tight.
The gap hits 18 minutes at the foot of the Col de la Colombiere. Augustyn in particular will be happy with that as he is already just inside the top 20 and he could find himself moving up into the top 15 if this gap holds.
This climb too is fairly uneventful. The peloton is reduced to 88 riders but the pace still hasn’t really started to increase too much. Up front the order over the top is exactly the same as the previous climb with Nepomnyachsniy leading over Augustyn followed by Tschopp and then Maillet. So with these 8 points Maillet needs 16 more to wear the jersey – he has to finish first or second on the stage! The only other point of note is that Dumoulin is dropped from the break.
The break hit the base of the Pierre Carree and their gap over the bunch still stands at a whopping 18’18” meaning that the winner will certainly come from the break today.
One of the really hard parts of the climb comes right near the start and already it is too much for some of the riders in the break as Janse van Rensburg and Fraile are dropped. Castroviejo follows soon after.
Maillet now decides to launch an attack. Remember that he needs to be in the top 2 riders at the end of the day to take the mountain jersey. His attack succeeds in dropping Tschopp but Nepomnyachsniy and Augustyn still stick with him. We are now just down to these three for the stage win.
Finally, 4km into this final climb, something happens back in the bunch! Amador launches an attack and no one follows. He pulls out a small gap and starts to ride in the hope of moving up the GC rankings.
Up front Maillet launches another attack in an effort to drop the other two... and this time he succeeds! The 2 chasers team up and try to bring him back.
At almost this exact same spot, just over 11km from the summit, when the peloton comes through it is Madrazo himself who is doing the pacing. There are just 21 riders left here 16” behind Amador, whose gap has stagnated a bit. In the bunch we have:
Amador is caught soon afterwards but he attacks again almost straight away and this time he is joined by Intxausti.
Once again Madrazo makes the catch of these two and this time no attack follows again immediately. That isn’t to say that all the attacks stop, however, as with 5.6km to go Schleck launches an attack. He has nothing to fight for but pride at this point.
The reason is that the break are still over 8 minutes ahead. Maillet leads solo and it is Augustyn who is chasing after him alone. Nepomnyachsniy has cracked but is still carrying on behind them.
Into the final kilometre Augustyn is absolutely burying himself to try to catch Maillet.
But Jocelin Maillet just had too much for everyone else in the break today and he takes the stage win. He also takes 20 mountain points, which means that he just has to finish the race tomorrow in order to take the mountain jersey. Interestingly, Maillet was second in the mountain competition at the Vuelta earlier this year too! He also had 2 second places in stages from breaks but now it has really paid off!
Augustyn rolls over in second place and will just be glad to move up on GC. Nepomnyachsniy limps over the line to take third just a touch over 2 minutes later. The rest of the break has either already been swallowed up or are about to be so the fight for the remaining spots will come from the favourites.
Speaking of the favourites, while chasing after Schleck, Madrazo in fact formed a break on the rest of the bunch with only Pluchkin following him.
Schleck has just over 30 seconds under the final kite in the fight for fourth place. Cunego also manages to attack up to the two who had eased away.
Schleck loses a lot of ground inside the final kilometre but he maintains a gap over the others and takes fourth. 11 seconds later Madrazo comes through. Cunego is right there with him as he has been for most of the last three weeks. Finally Pluchkin takes seventh.
Intxausti leads in the next group which contains most of the favourites 45” after the group of the yellow jersey. Henao and Amador are here with him to round out the top ten. Interestingly they pull out a 19 second gap on the rest of the favourites... which in fact means that Amador will overtake Brajkovic and move up to 6th!
So with only one completely flat stage around Paris to go Madrazo has defended his lead and can enjoy a quiet parade. There weren’t any changes at the top end of the order apart from Amador moving up one spot. Madrazo defends his points jersey lead and it would take a miracle for him to lose it tomorrow. Maillet takes the mountain jersey to go with his stage win and unless he pulls out tomorrow he is the guaranteed winner there.
Finally, we have a long list of riders withdrawing. This reduces us to 138/198 original riders:
