So with the Pyrenees behind us we have the first of two transitional stages which will take us to the Alps. This particular stage will bring us into Nimes on a 173.6km course. There are only three category four climbs out there so it shouldn’t be enough to challenge most of the sprinters. What the sprinters may find more challenging is the lack of teammates. Pokerstars are down to 5 riders, Festina are down to 6 and Puma have 7. How will this affect the lead-out trains, particularly because Festina and Pokerstars have both lost key men in that department.
Today’s break will surely be all about who has legs left after a gruelling past week. The first man to think that he has what it takes is Andre Steensen.
But plenty of others are willing to give it a go:
Christophe Riblon
Bradley Wiggins
Pieter Ghyllebert
George Preidler
Roman Kreuziger
Jakub Danacik
Koldo Gil
Dmitri Grabovski
Timothy Vangheel
Jurgen Vandewalle
Johan Le Bon
Jesse Sergent
Adriano Malori
Mauro Facci
Sten Stenersen
Aidis Kruopis
Sep Vanmarcke
Alexander Wetterhall
Oscar Fraile
Reinhardt Janse Van Rensburg
Thomas Frei
Ronan Van Zandbeek
Remberto Jaramillo
Of these five rouleurs get away:
Roman Kreuziger
Timothy Vangheel
Sten Stenersen
Sep Vanmarcke
Alexander Wetterhall
None of these riders are real threats in either the general classification or the mountain classification, so everyone is happy with them getting away. Before the first categorised climb the only thing of interest is Pardilla falling off his bike.
The first climb arrives with 112km still remaining. Wetterhall rolls over in first ahead of Vangheel and Stenersen. No one here is really interested, as none of them really stand to gain anything by expending their energy. The gap is only at 4’37”.
Despite the lack of domestiques in their teams the workload is being shared fairly equally amongst Festina, Puma and Pokerstars, with Lotto also helping out a bit.
The second categorised climb occurs with 71km to go. Though it is harder than the other two climbs today, it still isn’t particularly difficult. Vangheel goes over first this time with Kreuziger in second and Wetterhall in third. The gap is still at a manageable 7’04”.
Almost exactly 20km later we hit the third and final categorised climb of the day. This one is very short. Kreuziger leads over this time ahead of Wetterhall and then Stenersen. What’s interesting to note is that now, with 51km remaining, the gap has gone out to 7’54”! As the bunch comes over the top it is clear that only Lotto are working, and even then they are just tapping out a steady rhythm. The sprinting teams just don’t seem to have enough domestiques.
David Claerebout now takes a tumble. Interestingly he has now crashed three times since stage 9 but he still seems keen to soldier on.
Finally, with 23km remaining, the peloton seems keen to actually do something about this gap and all the sprinters get their teams up the front to try to bring it back. By the time there is 17km to go the gap is down to 5’49”, meaning that almost 3 minutes have been taken off in the past 6km.
At about this point Stenersen decides that he will be the first of the breakaway to launch a bid for the finish line. There is still a long way to go but he is a strong time trialist so this is what he is best at.
With 10km to go he has pulled out a small gap and it seems that the peloton definitely aren’t going to be able to pull this back. The gaps are:
28”
4’13”
Stenersen
--->
Chasers
--->
Peloton
And with 5km to go his gap is shrinking but still there. This might be close in terms of holding on. He now has 19” on the chase group.
But hang on, the peloton is 7km from the finish when suddenly there is a massive pile-up near the front of the bunch that decimates almost the entire peloton!
These riders are involved (this is as complete a list as I could manage and I can’t guarantee that it is 100% accurate, but it is as close as I could come in all the confusion). Yes, that is around 100 riders:
Velits (7th), Vandewalle, Sinkeldam, Simon, Poels, Castroviejo, Mat Senan
Kohl (9th), Kennaugh, Ibanez, Deignan, Oyarzun, Wiggins
Vanderbiest, Vastaranta, Samoilev, Kneisky, Goncalves, Maillet
Cooper, Facci, Moinard, Bennett, Margaliot, Stubbe
Amador (4th), Riblon, Le Bon, Frei, Tschopp
Costagli, Ignatiev, Malori, Ghyselinck, Schar
Mohs, Clement, Kern, Dumoulin, Van Goolen
Aasvold, Haas, Jaramillo, Nordhaug, Biziyaremye
Marinangelli, Duarte, Oss, Bodnar, Sagan, Brambilla
Pardilla, Grabovski, Navarro, Kruopis, Perget
Pluchkin (10th), Reckweg, Vandborg, Steensen
Abal (13th), Barrio, Fraile, Gil
Jeannesson, Brandt, Bauer, Peterson
Janse van Rensburg, Bookwalter, Sprick, Elissonde, Mai
Lloret, Duenas, Cobo, Moschella
Henao, Sergent, Nepomnyachsniy, Kulhavy
Claerebout (his 4th crash), Samwel, Porte, Kvasina
Valls (14th), Del Nero, Erviti
Brandle, Brenes, Preidler
Danacik, Fiedler
Lavoine, Sorenson
Delage, Meersman
In addition there is one more rider who withdraws because his injuries are too bad – Jerome Coppel. That is a huge blow to Milka, as he was quite likely to win the remaining time trial. You really have to feel sorry for them after all of the terrible luck they have experienced.
But the race must go on, particularly with the pace this high and the fight for the points jersey going on. Regardless, up front Vangheel manages to catch Stenersen just before the kite as he opens his sprint.
Vangheel manages to get a bit of a gap on the others. Kreuziger is coming fast behind but has some ground to close.
But Timothy Vangheel takes a huge win as he holds off the rest of the break! He timed his sprint perfectly, catching everyone else off guard – certainly a great result for a minimum wage rider!
Time trialist Wetterhall comes in second ahead of loaned-in rider Vanmarcke. Kreuziger comes through in fourth, unable to take a win to make up for his team’s disastrous day. Finally Stenersen drops to the back of the group but he has to be applauded for trying.
The bunch come into the final 2km and it looks like there are only about 35 riders there, but there is a group of 5 behind the bunch with some big names – it looks like Schleck, Brajkovic and Anton were delayed by the initial crash and, while they stayed upright, they couldn’t hold on to the bunch.
Bennati wins the bunch sprint of 32 riders for sixth to mop up the ten points, though he will probably just be glad to still be upright after today. Granjel Cabrera follows Wetterhall’s example and comes in second in his group. Ponzi takes 8 valuable points by coming in eighth but he will be disappointed to see Cunego ghosting him in ninth place. Finally, tenth place goes to Impey.
Schleck and Brajkovic come through 1’12” down on the peloton with Anton another 33” back. This could complicate what the GC picture is given how many riders lost time today in the crash.
The riders who were in the crash all finish in one group together 5’40” behind the peloton. There are some GC riders here so let’s see how the top ten looks now. The top 3 are unchanged, though Schleck does lose time on the others. The only reason Schleck doesn’t lose his podium place is that his main competitor, Amador, was part of the crash and he dropped to ninth. This moves Intxausti into fourth place and Tenorio into fifth. Sicard and Pedraza move into sixth and seventh because of the riders who lost time – Velits, Kohl and the extremely unlucky Pluchkin, who drops to twelfth.
We have another flat stage tomorrow – let us just hope that it is less eventful than today’s stage.
