Tour de France - Stage 15
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-1.jpg

So with the Pyrenees behind us we have the first of two transitional stages which will take us to the Alps. This particular stage will bring us into Nimes on a 173.6km course. There are only three category four climbs out there so it shouldn’t be enough to challenge most of the sprinters. What the sprinters may find more challenging is the lack of teammates. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars are down to 5 riders, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina are down to 6 and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma have 7. How will this affect the lead-out trains, particularly because i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars have both lost key men in that department.

Today’s break will surely be all about who has legs left after a gruelling past week. The first man to think that he has what it takes is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Andre Steensen.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-2.jpg

But plenty of others are willing to give it a go:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Christophe Riblon
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Bradley Wiggins

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sep Vanmarcke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Alexander Wetterhall
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Oscar Fraile
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Reinhardt Janse Van Rensburg
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Thomas Frei
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ronan Van Zandbeek
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Remberto Jaramillo

Of these five rouleurs get away:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Roman Kreuziger
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Timothy Vangheel
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Sten Stenersen
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sep Vanmarcke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Alexander Wetterhall

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-3.jpg

None of these riders are real threats in either the general classification or the mountain classification, so everyone is happy with them getting away. Before the first categorised climb the only thing of interest is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Pardilla falling off his bike.

The first climb arrives with 112km still remaining. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Wetterhall rolls over in first ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Vangheel and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Stenersen. No one here is really interested, as none of them really stand to gain anything by expending their energy. The gap is only at 4’37”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-4.jpg

Despite the lack of domestiques in their teams the workload is being shared fairly equally amongst i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto also helping out a bit.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-5.jpg

The second categorised climb occurs with 71km to go. Though it is harder than the other two climbs today, it still isn’t particularly difficult. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Vangheel goes over first this time with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kreuziger in second and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Wetterhall in third. The gap is still at a manageable 7’04”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-6.jpg

Almost exactly 20km later we hit the third and final categorised climb of the day. This one is very short. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kreuziger leads over this time ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Wetterhall and then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Stenersen. What’s interesting to note is that now, with 51km remaining, the gap has gone out to 7’54”! As the bunch comes over the top it is clear that only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto are working, and even then they are just tapping out a steady rhythm. The sprinting teams just don’t seem to have enough domestiques.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-7.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png David Claerebout now takes a tumble. Interestingly he has now crashed three times since stage 9 but he still seems keen to soldier on.

Finally, with 23km remaining, the peloton seems keen to actually do something about this gap and all the sprinters get their teams up the front to try to bring it back. By the time there is 17km to go the gap is down to 5’49”, meaning that almost 3 minutes have been taken off in the past 6km.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-8.jpg

At about this point i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Stenersen decides that he will be the first of the breakaway to launch a bid for the finish line. There is still a long way to go but he is a strong time trialist so this is what he is best at.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-9.jpg

With 10km to go he has pulled out a small gap and it seems that the peloton definitely aren’t going to be able to pull this back. The gaps are:

28”4’13”
Stenersen--->Chasers--->Peloton

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-10.jpg

And with 5km to go his gap is shrinking but still there. This might be close in terms of holding on. He now has 19” on the chase group.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-11.jpg

But hang on, the peloton is 7km from the finish when suddenly there is a massive pile-up near the front of the bunch that decimates almost the entire peloton!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-12.jpg

These riders are involved (this is as complete a list as I could manage and I can’t guarantee that it is 100% accurate, but it is as close as I could come in all the confusion). Yes, that is around 100 riders:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits (7th), Vandewalle, Sinkeldam, Simon, Poels, Castroviejo, Mat Senan

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Claerebout (his 4th crash), Samwel, Porte, Kvasina
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Valls (14th), Del Nero, Erviti

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Danacik, Fiedler
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine, Sorenson
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage, Meersman

In addition there is one more rider who withdraws because his injuries are too bad – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Jerome Coppel. That is a huge blow to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Milka, as he was quite likely to win the remaining time trial. You really have to feel sorry for them after all of the terrible luck they have experienced.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-13.jpg

But the race must go on, particularly with the pace this high and the fight for the points jersey going on. Regardless, up front i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Vangheel manages to catch i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Stenersen just before the kite as he opens his sprint.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-14.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Vangheel manages to get a bit of a gap on the others. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kreuziger is coming fast behind but has some ground to close.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-15.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Timothy Vangheel takes a huge win as he holds off the rest of the break! He timed his sprint perfectly, catching everyone else off guard – certainly a great result for a minimum wage rider!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-16.jpg

Time trialist i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Wetterhall comes in second ahead of loaned-in rider i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Vanmarcke. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kreuziger comes through in fourth, unable to take a win to make up for his team’s disastrous day. Finally i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Stenersen drops to the back of the group but he has to be applauded for trying.

The bunch come into the final 2km and it looks like there are only about 35 riders there, but there is a group of 5 behind the bunch with some big names – it looks like i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton were delayed by the initial crash and, while they stayed upright, they couldn’t hold on to the bunch.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-17.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati wins the bunch sprint of 32 riders for sixth to mop up the ten points, though he will probably just be glad to still be upright after today. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera follows i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Wetterhall’s example and comes in second in his group. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi takes 8 valuable points by coming in eighth but he will be disappointed to see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego ghosting him in ninth place. Finally, tenth place goes to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF15-18.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic come through 1’12” down on the peloton with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton another 33” back. This could complicate what the GC picture is given how many riders lost time today in the crash.

The riders who were in the crash all finish in one group together 5’40” behind the peloton. There are some GC riders here so let’s see how the top ten looks now. The top 3 are unchanged, though i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck does lose time on the others. The only reason i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck doesn’t lose his podium place is that his main competitor, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador, was part of the crash and he dropped to ninth. This moves i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti into fourth place and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio into fifth. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza move into sixth and seventh because of the riders who lost time – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kohl and the extremely unlucky i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin, who drops to twelfth.

We have another flat stage tomorrow – let us just hope that it is less eventful than today’s stage.
