Time for the mountain stage to kick of the real GC fight. So far we had a selection on the second stage, but the top climbers are all within the same time, while other climbers have lost some time and need to attack here.
Top favourites obviously Uran, Marquez and Eastman.
Several riders in todays breakaway.
Kimeli
Kononenko
Cieslik
Terciado
Sinelobov
Gonzalo
Sequera
All riders are +6'38 except for Gonzalo, who as best placed is only 2'35 behind race leader Hutarovich.
So it`s not a big surprise that Gonzalo is the only interesting rider for the bonus seconds.
BelarusBank for race leader Hutarovich are seen at the front. But actually defending their lead today is almost impossible. Quickstep for Marquez the 2nd team here and obviously with better chances. Also Magna for Cataldo looks ambitious today.
The next sprint is almost at the start of the climb. Gonzalo still takes it but the peloton is not far behind. Only 46s back here.
Pozzo is the first rider to attack just when the climb starts. +2'35 his gap to the top climbers. So trying early is the way to go.
6km left and three more riders follow Pozzo, who joined the breakaway.
It`s no one else than Marquez together with Cataldo and surprisingly Sousa.
Eastman immediately reacts and follows as well. So it`s soon time for the last favourites and in especially Uran to follow.
But nothing to see from Bacardi. Is their leader not feeling well today?
At the moment it`s Meiji doing the pace and it`s Ji himself chasing.
Meanwhile two more riders ahead of them, who did attack:
Lloret and Karcher leader
Karpets.
So who is missing here? Uran for sure.
Nerz, Nieve, Agudelo, Samwel, Efimkin...
Ji was the first to jump out of the peloton after his chasing wasn`t enough. He is followed by Nerz, Peterson and Soler.
And finally here he comes: Rigoberto Uran! 3,5km to go for him but the first riders are already 900m ahead while most other attackers are somewhere in between. So quite a gap he has to close now. Why did he attack that late? Why did he not have any support by Navarro to chase the attackers down?
Surely a lot to discuss after the race.
Some favourites reached the breakaway.
Marquez
Eastman
Karpets
Cataldo
Pozzo
all within the breakaway group.
Ji and Uran next already slowly closing the gap. But the front already below the Flamme Rouge.
Marquez with another attack now followed by Karpets and Eastman. The former breakaway starts to struggle a lot while Cataldo and Pozzo are not placed that well.
No one can follow the Quickstep rider, who seems to take the GC and a 2nd stage win.
Behind only former breakaway riders Kimeni and Sinelobov can keep contact to the Eastman group.
Marquez already knows that he will win the stage early. So he starts celebrating.
Passing the line gives him the guarantee to take over the GC and being the top favourite for the win now. In especially after Uran was weak today.
Eastman and Karpets cross the line next. They lost 39s on the last kilometer, which shows Marquez` strength here.
But behind them another gap. Cataldo, Kimeni and Sinelobov with +53s. So Cataldo with a good result here seeing the riders behind him. Also strong ride by the two breakaway riders.
Another 15s later the rest of the former breakaway riders plus Pozzo.
And also in this group already Rigoberto Uran, who gained a lot on the last kilometer. On those at least, while Marquez was able to keep his ~1min gap.
Ji a bit later coming in solo with a 1'34 gap.
Lloret and Nerz next with a bit more than 2min while Soler, Sousa, Peterson, Cieslik and Sequera also come ahead of the peloton.
The peloton climbed not very fast, so some teams will be hugely disappointed with their leaders, who didn`t even try.
Efimkin, Samwel, Ndbri, Agudelo, Ardila Cano, Serpa and so on. All have lost their last chance to finish inside the top15 probably.
GC wise the top4 of today also is the new GC top4. Uran as 5th and Ji as 6th with decent results, but for first this is of course underperforming and he has to hope to climb a bit on the next stage.
