Tour de France - Stage 10
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-1.jpg

Today brings us the first of two transitional stages as we travel from Montepellier to Toulouse. It is 221.5km in length and while it isn’t totally flat, with four category climb spaced out over the course, it is still tipped to end in a sprint finish. The end of the course is interesting, however, as we have a long flat period and then two small uncategorised climbs inside the final 17km.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-2.jpg

So the question is this – will the climbs drop any riders or will it just affect the ability of some to sprint? i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniele Bennati will surely be looking to add to his stage win earlier in the race but as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Oscar Guerao has already showed the Italian is looking very beatable this season. Not only that but riders like i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Erik Mohs will be keen to make up for a disappointing race so far. In addition to this final climb the riders will have to compete with strong winds.

The first attack of the day comes from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Pieter Ghyllebert. Thanks to his attack on stage six he has 24 mountain points already and with the 24 on offer today he could move into the lead if he wins every mountain prime.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-3.jpg

Of course his job is made much more complex by the extraordinary number of people wanting to join the break. They are:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Rafaa Chtioui
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Adriano Malori
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Mikhail Ignatiev
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Koldo Gil
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Lars Petter Nordhaug
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Phan Age Haugard

The break is still struggling to form when suddenly we get news that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Angel Madrazo is behind the peloton! What’s happened? Oh... wait... it looks like it is just a flat tire! His team wait for him and they bring the race favourite back but that is surely a moment of panic. No doubt people will wonder if he has burned some unnecessary energy here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-5.jpg

The break is still forming over the top of the first climb and here i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev goes over first ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Vangheel. They have under a minute on the bunch though so their day out front is far from guaranteed.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-4.jpg

As it happens the fight does go out of the bunch at this point and two more riders join these three to form our break of five. The others are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ronan Van Zandbeek and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Benoit Vaugrenard. No one here is a real threat to any of the jerseys.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-6.jpg

Having won the first climb i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev decides that he is interested in the maximum of 24 points on offer today after all and attacks to take the second climb’s prize. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vaugrenard is second over ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Van Zandbeek. The gap is still at a fairly small 3’11” but it is steadily growing.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-7.jpg

The gap isn’t growing too quickly, however, and that’s largely thanks to the efforts of four different teams. Team B&O are working for the race leader while Festina, Puma and Pokerstars are all working for their sprinters.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-8.jpg

As we hit the summit o the long but truly unchallenging third climb, with 107km to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev once again attacks for the points. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski rolls over in second place ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Van Zandbeek. The gap is at 6’34” now and already starting to come down. The pack has been at a high pace almost all day and that may be dangerous in this heavy wind.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-9.jpg

Not much more happens between this climb and the final one, where once again i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev attacks away. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vaugrenard leads the rest of the break over and then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski is just behind him. The difference is that now, with 50km to go, the gap is only 2’59”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-10.jpg

The pace continues with the same four teams working, though eventually i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png B&O stop and allow the sprinting teams to take over completely. With 16.8km remaining we hit the first of the two uncategorised climbs in the finale of the stage. The gap is only at 50”. This climb is almost 3% the entire way up but hits about 5% near the summit.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-11.jpg

After about 200km of racing this proves too much for the break and the fight goes out of them on this rise. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Geert Steurs makes the catch almost at the summit. Now the race will carry on to the flat then drop down to another short climb before the descent to the finish.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-12.jpg

But it looks like not everyone will make it together as we have some riders at the back who have crashed! The riders are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Terciado
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Basso
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Stalder
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brandt (28th overall)

In addition i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Matteo Cattaneo can’t get back onto his bike and things are looking bad – he has to abandon the race thanks to his injuries.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-13.jpg

But the bunch isn’t slowing and with 5.7km to go they hit the final climb. This one is 1.7km long and has a maximum of 6% and an average around the 4% mark. It is harder but if you can get over it in a good position then the fast descent will take you to the one kilometre mark. Being in a good position is key here. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Mikael Delage is the first rider to hit the climb.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-14.jpg

And up teh climb all three of the major sprinting teams work to keep their leaders to teh front. At the summit it seems that all three have managed to set up trains!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-15.jpg

Those trains are:

Left train:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dupont
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs

Middle train:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Sinner
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao

Right train:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist does a great job to pull his train even with the other two. Meanwhile i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet joins the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars train. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Castaneda moves onto i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati’s wheel i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbeist and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek follow the Colombian sprinter. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera is on the right too, but can’t pick a train.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-16.jpg

With 1.6km to go and the descent almost over all three trains go to their final lead-out man. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine starts with a slight disadvantage to the other two. We are about to hit the flat under the final kite.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-17.jpg

We now get a report of a fall in the middle of the bunch, which really stretches things out. The riders affected are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Claerebout (his second fall in two days)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vastaranta
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Vangheel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Haas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zepunkte

But all eyes are on the front as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine pulls i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao ahead of the other two. On the left i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet decides to launch his sprint.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-18.jpg

With 700 metres to go all three of the big name sprinters come out from behind their final lead-out man and make their push for the line. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs is behind the other two, who start their sprint almost neck-and-neck.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-19.jpg

With 400 metres to go it is still close between i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati. Not only that but i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs is actually moving the fastest of the three!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-20.jpg

With 200 metres to go it is a three way fight.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-21.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Oscar Guerao holds on to take his second stage of this year’s Tour de France! He really owes this to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine, who set him up perfectly.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-22.jpg

It is an absolute photo finish for second place but i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs beats i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati by only an inch to take a very strong second place. He showed today that he has what it takes to fight with the best in the sprints. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati will be disappointed with his third place and will want to take the stage win tomorrow to make his trip here worth it.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera is the best of the rest in fourth place, a very strong result. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek puts in a great ride for fifth, showing the importance of positioning over the final climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Castaneda gives i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png VolksWagen something to cheer for with his sixth place. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest is in seventh while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet went too early and faded to eighth. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto held his speed to the end for ninth and finally Bonnet rounds out the top ten.

But it turns out with the high speed winds, the final climb and the crash in the middle of the bunch 97 riders were dropped off the back. Unfortunately there are some important names here. Out of the top thirty overall the following lost 1’25” today:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Valls
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF10-23.jpg

This results in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic dropping to eleventh and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Faiers moving back into the top ten at his expense. That’s the only change in the top ten. In the points jersey, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi could only score 2 points today, perhaps as a result of his exertions yesterday, but that is enough to ensure that he still has a 4 point lead over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao. The Italian will have to perform much better tomorrow if he doesn’t want to lose his green jersey, however.
