Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
Stage 2 is the Trofeo Ses Salines. So named, because it ends in Ses Salines. Another sprint seems likely, but today does see the introduction of the King of the Mountains jersey. They are not much more than speed bumps, but it does not take much to upset race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Maksimov.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-1.jpg

The first move featured i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Seeldraeyers, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Van Zyl, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Lagkuti and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Kosic and it is in that order which they crossed the first KoM and first sprint.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-2.jpg

That wasn't to be the break of the day, but lucky for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Van Zyl, he did make it in the one that stuck. This time with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Tratnik and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Dueñas. This if the first we have seen of the Euskaltel squad this season!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-3.jpg

Clearly, the climbs were to be the key interest for the break today. Tratnik and Van Zyl each took a win in the next two on offer - but Dueñas kept himself in the mix by taking 2nd both times.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-4.jpg

Bad news in the peloton though, as RBC's best climber i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Durasek has crashed on the exit of a roundabout. His injures are bad, and he is forced to abandon the race!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Dueñas finally gets a KoM win at the next sprint.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-6.jpg

Meanwhile the Namibians are back on the head of the peloton. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Project: Africa keen to bring the break back for a shot at a second stage win. The peloton are being strung out, and again a small group has been dropped - mostly the same riders again who got dropped yesterday. It is too early in the season for them!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-7.jpg

But first is the final climb of the day, with the King of the Mountains jersey still up for grabs. Any of the three in the break could take the jersey lead by winning the climb - and the winner is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Moises Dueñas!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-8.jpg

It gives him 16 points, compared to 13 for Van Zyl and 10 for Tratnik.

The Spaniard keeps going as well, and is the last of the break to be caught. But caught he is, by around 20km to go. Time to relax and await sprint then?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-9.jpg

Crash! Bad news for Project: Africa as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Rangel, who played an important role yesterday, is the man down. But who is that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Quickstep rider???

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-10.jpg

It's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Chris Froome! The race favourite is down!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-11.jpg

Also crashing here are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Kohler, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Hoffman, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Anton Martin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Sys, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Cancellara, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Van Poppel and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Coquard.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Wippert and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Skjerping drop back to support Froome, but it is surely a lost cause. It is too close to the finish to make it back now, and time will be lost. But it could be worse, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Nolan Hoffman has become the 2nd rider to abandon the race today.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-12.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Project: Africa are in need of a new 3rd man to their train, and they pick Cameroonian Ngock. They are the foremost train in the build up to the sprint, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Wegmann right there behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Lay and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Maksimov.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-13.jpg

RBC are back to challenge them once again with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Torckler, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Docker and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Cardoso is better prepared today and has joined a sprint train before the sprint begins.

Mobil again try with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Becerra, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Mora and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Granjel Cabrera, while also well placed are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Fonseca, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Rabon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Cucinotta, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Nikolaev and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Lavoine.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-14.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Priamo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Angarita, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Tzortzakis and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Dabkowski are next - while Venchi are in a right mess. They have riders up there, but are having to stall, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Corioni is some way back.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-15.jpg

The sprint opens and like on Stage 1, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Docker is the first to go. He won't have enjoyed how easily i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Lay caught him yesterday - and this time they are more level at the start.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-16.jpg

The Aussie seems to be better today though, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Cardoso will be feeling pretty pleased as these two trains are pulling clear. Poor coordination at Mobil sees i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Granjel Cabrera lose contact with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Mora.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-17.jpg

It is a fast downhill finish to the stage, and there is a clear gap already behind the first 7 riders.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-18.jpg

Docker's leadout delivers i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest perfectly, with a couple of lengths lead on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Maksimov.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-19.jpg

But with such a fast finish, can he even pass Docker? Cardoso is struggling, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Lavoine and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Granjel Cabrera try to catch up from behind.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-20.jpg

The winner has to come from RBC though, and lead man i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Romain Vanderbiest takes it! That should make up for Durasek's withdrawal. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Maksimov has to lunge on the line to just edge out Docker for 2nd place.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-21.jpg
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Lay takes 4th, as the leadout trains again show their superiority. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Mora actually beats his leader by 2 positions to take 5th, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Wegmann is showing good form for 6th.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/vma2-23.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Lavoine took 8th, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Cardoso faded all the way down to 9th. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Corioni fought through for 10th.

Thanks to the first intermediate sprint on Stage 1, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Romain Vanderbiest takes a clear lead overall and in the points competition over Maksimov. The KoM jersey is for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Duenas, but as his two younger breakaway companions got dropped and lost time, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Kastrantas keeps his lead in the U25 competition.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Chris Froome loses 4'20 and is surely out of overall contention.
