The race is underway, and despite the HC classification of this race, there is no big fight for spots in the breakaway today.
Three men set off, three men are allowed to spend the day in the wind.
Koretzky
Goos
Passeron
The first intermediate sprint goes to Goos, the second one to Koretzky.
The gap never really grows further than 3 minutes, and thus it's an easy catch for the peloton on the right side just as AMEX, Armavia and Sram start to build their trains.
Rumours are Guardini said something nasty to Kupfernagel about his sister before the race, and after an apparent headbutt from the German in the second-to-last corner with 6k to go, both go down!
It's a beautiful dive by Guardini, but the referee doesn't fall for it and he's sent off! Always those Italians!
Meanwhile, not in a parallel universe, both still went down, but mainly because Bontenackels ahead underestimated the corner, an impressive feat considering it is a circuit race today...
Up front, the crash derailed the Armavia train completely, while obviously the AMEX train doesn't have their man to race for anymore.
Therefore, Sram is the only organised team left under the 5k banner.
Behind, splits occur because of the crash. It won't be an easy stage to get used to the conditions, and some team managers might see their hopes already crushed today!
The race is too fast to count groups and identify leaders, but it's hard to imagine everyone made it as the fall was in the front third of the peloton.
The sprint is opened for Mezgec by Wegmann with Ahlstrand in the wheel of the Slovenian.
Lo Cicero recovered a bit of his train and has Matzka trying to get him back to Mezgec's level.
Behind, Pedersen, Teruel, Iglinski, Andriato and Vingerling line up.
Around the corner just before the flamme rouge, Mezgec makes his move!
Lo Cicero forced him to by switching to Ahlstrand's wheel after Matzka couldn't deliver the way he wanted him to.
Still, there's quite a gap for the Italian to close now that we hit full speed.
Ahlstrand leaves the slipstream on the left side, while the rest of the sprinters take the right way. Lo Cicero is already fading, whlle Pedersen comes pretty fast.
The right side seems to be more sheltered from the wind today, and the Dane is about to take the lead!
Lo Cicero recovered a bit, Andriato still uses his slipstream and Ahlstrand on the wide side doesn't seem to be able to make up ground.
Now that the finish line is in sight, some red wheels emerge from the shadows of the barriers! Teruel has waited long enough for everyone else to tire and only hits top speed now.
It's a three-way race for the line and noone can tell yet who will take it!
It's the Spaniard! What a huge result for CSC in the relegation fight, stage win and yellow jersey are theirs for now in this HC race.
Now we find time to take a look behind. The first group is led by Jaguar, and of course it's Froome amongst them!
He loses 1'48" together with Serry.
There's a second, bigger group even further back. A loss of 3'15" means a hard time for GC riders such as Bellis, Gautier, Hoogerland, Barrio, Ardila, Efimkin, Puusepp and Lövkvist.
So, in the end it's not quite an all-around perfect day for CSC while Rothaus, Bpost, Swedbank and LukOil lose all of their GC hopes on the easiest stage. On the other hand, VW and Vespa face even less competition for the overall now.
