ZLM Tour - Stage 3
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_001_zpsab251fd3.jpg

The crucial stage for the GC: 189km with a steady up and down and featuring some short challenging climbs all the way.. also concluded by a hilltop-finish, this is where the puncheurs need to deliver.

Race-leader Van Stayen faces some tough competitors like Ben Nasser, Roy, Bellis and of course Ventoso, who did well to hit the podium on the first two days.. Van Stayen though delivered big time and leads by 40" on most of those top-puncheurs.

The break of the day grows from day to day: first 1, second 2, third 4! And good news for Magna, as the mountain-leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Boony would again make it into this breakway, accompanied by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Gaudin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Esmaeli and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren.

Gaudin as the only one here, who hasn't lost more than 4 minutes in the GC. So quite a threat if the peloton fails to control the race.. Boony would do enough to secure himself the polka dot:

KoM-competition i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Boony (adding 20 today, 42 total) i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Gaudin 16 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren 16

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_003_zps4451ba8b.jpg

Their gap is down to 1'30" as we now already go straight into the final 20km of this stage.. a few kilometres before, we saw the first notable moves back in the bunch: a group of 6 riders managed to establish a 45"-gap on the peloton!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Bilbao, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hermans, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser (who was the first to attack), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Stayen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Mandri and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Bellis (who just caught up now)

Van Stayen countered this first serious attempts, but there's still two climbs to follow..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_004_zpsd345a7a4.jpg

..and of course more riders trying to join this elite group: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Barrio, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Roy, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Konovalovas or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Rabon attack the bunch on the penultimate climb 14km before finish!

Group Van Stayen 31" ahead, with just i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Esmaeli holding on to a 40"-lead (his breakaway companions got swallowed by the first group of favorites..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_005_zps6c35af94.jpg

The latest attacks in the peloton would narrow the gap to Van Stayen and 10km before finish, the bunch would soon close the gap..

..just at this point, we see the next attempts: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Bilbao, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Bellis, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Roy, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hermans go again with 9km remaining!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_006_zpsbc668034.jpg

They catch up to last escapee Esmaeli, who put up a huge fight here..

+ 26" for the peloton, where we still see 86 riders alltogether.. but also some first notable names being dropped:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Haussler, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Mezgec and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi as the best-placed in GC.. Haussler as the biggest surprise, but he already struggled to do anything good yesterday..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_007_zps5b22b76f.jpg

Speaking of struggling... the leading group Bellis/Ben Nasser would also struggle to hold on their small gap and so the peloton bridges this gap 3km before finish!

This might have been a missed chance to put some pressure on Van Stayen.. but on the other hand, the flat sector would allow the bunch to pull them back..

Anyway, let's not forget to mention the next attack in line: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Weiss comes out of nowhere for a late move!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_008_zps30be9c1c.jpg

He's joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Gatto and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Baugnies, opening up a 15"-gap on the bunch, where the top-favorites slowed down for a moment..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_009_zps3573159d.jpg

..and took them quite a while to bring themselves back in the position to actually be in the mix on this short hilltop-finish:

1.5km to go and the new leading trio is already 27" ahead!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_010_zps6e5ed73c.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser is the first top-favorite to finally kick off another attack, trying to bridge this 24"-gap as quickly as possible!

Jumping behind are Hermans, Bilbao and Roy, but there's no notable gap for those three..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_011_zps104b9ff3.jpg

Ben Nasser with a small advantage on this trio, while also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Ventoso finally shows himself here, followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Stayen and Bellis/Konovalovas!

Still a gap for the leading trio though..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_012_zpsf6f39716.jpg

Ben Nasser as the only one in striking distance.. while Weiss took the leading position, with both Gatto and Baugnies struggling to move forward..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_013_zps0a482461.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Weiss claims the stage! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Gatto lungs in for 2nd ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser and an unlucky i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Baugnies.. so Ben Nasser came too late to grab more valuable bonus seconds..

..especially as the riders behind did manage to close the small gap: 21 riders were noted as the leading group in our latest news, thus including i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Ventoso, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Rabon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Stayen, as well as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Bellis (13th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Roy (17th) or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Bilbao (14th)! So quite a disappointing stage for the very best puncheurs, while Van Stayen did defend his GC-lead quite easily..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_3_014_zps778f6f68.jpg

But it's getting even worse for the likes of Ben Nasser/Bellis/Roy: thanks to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Toribio not giving up sprinting til the finish line, the 21-men-group wouldn't be rewarded a gap on the remaining big bunch with several sprinters inside! Eventually, 91 riders are given the same finishing time here. Far from being a selective hilly stage...

..and so some huge news for several sprinters, who finished savely in this big group: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Stayen still in the lead, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Weiss new 2nd ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Greipel! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Ventoso and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Holloway to Top-5 at this point and more good news for Heineken, as also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Gaudin sits on a provisional 7th (thanks to bonus seconds grabbed today) ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Bellis (11th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hermans (14th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Roy (18th) or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Bilbao (22nd) clearly won't like their current GC-positions. Given the earlier selection during today's stage, there were definitely some missed chances to keep the pace higher until the end..
