Stage two should, if you choose to believe it's category, offer another opportunity for the sprinters. It's far less of a typical flat stage than yesterday however, as there are several climbs to be forced towards the end.
Various puncheurs may fancy the chance of succeeding with a late attack. In other words, very hard to predict today's stage winner.
Following a large number of unsuccessful attempts to make the early breakaway from Simon Gerrans, a group of 4 establishes a gap over the peloton: Zaballa, Huzarski, Kiserlovski and Zeits
As always, they gain a good few minutes on the peloton while progressing through the first half of the stage. The quartet isn't going to be successful today however, as Credexbank once again patrol at the front of the main field.
Given Clarke's embarrasing failure yesterday, it's somewhat of a questionable choice of tactics from the Belarussian squad.
The concern soon proves to be valid. Once we reach the two ascents of the day's biggest climb, other teams start helping Credexbank with the pacemaking.
The increased pressure almost immediately takes it's toll on Clarke, who goes out the back door near the end of the 2nd climb. Several team mates drop back to help the Aussie, while Ian Stannard also struggles to cope with the pace.
In spite of Credexbank's efforts to bring their leader back to the main field, they fail to return and finish way down today.
Switching focus to the peloton again, where the pace just continues to increase as more and more teams join the front on the penultimate climb.
Perhaps surprised by the slope's difficulty, many riders are dropped before the summit is reached. Among those are several pure sprinters and timetriallists such as Korzh, Teruel, Olman and Ford.
Their fallout is quickly shadowed however, as Kiryenka and Costa join the gruppetto soon afterwards!
While Tinkoff might simply have other plans in mind for the GC, it's an absolute disaster for CSC-Orbea, who don't have any other contender. And shockingly, they still don't call back riders to help Costa out of this crisis.
Back at the front, the breakaway is swallowed after an unrewarding day. Kiserlovski was the first to realise that it was pointless to keep going with nothing to gain, with the other three following not long afterwards.
In the flick of an eye, we're back on the same hill again for the day's final climb. This time we have home team Pivovarna Laško in the lead, with Der setting the pace for yesterday's runner-up: Bole
The speed is even higher this time, and more riders are put in difficulty at the back of the group.
Over the summit, the field has been reduced to just 47 riders. Most of the big GC contenders have stayed in contact, but it's worth mentioning a few of those left behind:
Ma
Cornu (to help Drujon)
Van Winden
The front of the race meanwhile remains occupied by Pivovarna and Der, who leads out the sprint for Bole inside the last 3 km.
Fighting for the positions behind the Slovenian champion are Golas, Kunshin, Sobal, Bibby and race leader Bazayev.
Determined to please the home crowd, Bole confidently jumps into the lead at 800m to the finish.
Winner of the battle for his wheel, Golas, immediately struggles to hold on and leaves a gap.
A gap that can't be closed by anyone, as Bole kicks up the slight drag to the finish - claiming an impressive stage win in front of a crazy public!
The sprint for 2nd is a photofinish a couple of meters behind today's winner. It is eventually awarded to Sobal after examination. Bibby might be a little disappointed to have missed out on those extra bonus seconds, but should still be happy about today's gains for his GC campaign.
Race leader Bazayev ran out of steam on the uphill finish and faded to a 15th place, which means that Bole also takes over the leader's jersey.
