166,6km of completely flat riding today. It couldn`t be much easier to be honest and as there is also no wind today and sunny weather it`s a nice stage for the peloton. Again of course a sprinter course with Greipel being the top favourite after yesterdays win. Also Serebriakov and Manan looked well while others need to improve.
4 riders in the early breakaway even though there is most likely not much to win for those. Not even a single KoM sprint.
Oliveira
Grashev
Van Ooijen
Kinoshita
The GC being so close together it`s not a surprise that all of them are interested in the only intermediate sprint today.
Grashev in the end wins it over Kinoshita and Van Ooijen.
But they will have to finish ahead of the peloton to have any chance to get the leader jersey.
But with 100km and a bit over 6min Team WWE is setting a higher pace. It`s mainly Voeckler and Sutherland working for the team. Can Andre Greipel make it 2/2 today
6km and the breakaway is caught more or less. Only Oliveira is trying it just like Devine did yesterday.
Today the sprint preparations look much improved as we see airBaltic and Hollister forming strong sprint trains while Oliveira is caught as last rider.
Amex learned from yesterdays experience I guess and does not form their own train again. That said, they probably did not learn too much as today there is no sprinter in a very good position with Farrar being at around 25th position only at the very end of anything you might want to call rest of the train.
McLay Oliphant Rowe Marentes Greipel Aguilar Awang Serebriakov Mezgec Castaneda Manan Salleh Teruel Ferrari Cooke Santos Chicchi Tzortzakis Eefting Clancy Farrar
The sprint trains work far better than yesterday as Oliphant just took over with 2,2km to go while Marentes is doing an awesome job for Hollister still leading out and closing the small gap to the airBaltic train. And with a rider more ahead of Serebriakov it`s looking quite well for them.
1,1km to go and Rowe realizes that his train can`t match today, so he decides to change, which moves him into 5th position behind Aguilar, Serebriakov, Mezgec and Salleh.
On the left side Greipel now finds himself in a bad position directly in the wind, which is obviously good for the riders behind him like Awang, Castaneda or Manan.
Perfect team work so far and with 700m to go Serebriakov goes around his teammate and only Mezgec is able to follow on the other side.
Surprisingly Salleh with a strong sprint so far even though a small gap opens now.
From behind we see Ferrari, Manan, Greipel, Santos, Castaneda, Teruel or Farrar trying to come back.
But nobody had any chance against the Hollister train today. Perfectly ridden by the team and then finished by Serebriakov, who can also celebrate in 2013 after two stage wins already in 2012.
In a close fight for the 2nd it`s Matt Rowe just beating Mezgec on the line.
Castaneda as 4th also improved today ahead of a strong Salleh.
Manan, Teruel, Chicchi, Greipel and Ferrari complete the top10 with Farrar showing a nice sprint from way too far behind as 11th.
GC wise this means that Greipel loses his jersey already to Serebriakov.
And look at this. A clear gap after the 59th rider and it`s a little bit a dejavu.
Let`s remember last years 6th stage. A huge split and only the sprinters and more or less the whole Hollister team in the first group, which helped Kiserlovski of course towards his GC win as he gained more than 3min on every other contender.
Today it`s not as bad. The gap is smaller with 1'19 and not all GC riders are caught. But a few unfortunately are.
In the first group Kiserlovski once again showed attention just like Kashechkin, Pellizotti, Ardila, Vrecer or Nicacio.
But in the 2nd group we have some bigger names of course like Ratiy, Anton, Krasnoperov, Gadret, Stetina or Peraud.
Huge disappointment for those left behind as every second might count in the end.
Also interesting that the officials change the KoM jersey. Tomorrow Pineau will get it instead of Khripta.
