Plenty of riders try to get away, but the peloton keeps them close not allowing anyone to get more than a minute within the first 80 km.
With 100 km to go 6 riders have gotten a gap of 3 minutes. They are Agnoli, Aregger, Lang, Cardoso, Fouquet and Kimeli.

It’s mainly Gazelle and RBC Pro Cycling working in the peloton, but it doesn’t look like they need more help anyway.
30 km and 1’50
22 km to go. The break starts the first climb with a gap of 1’48
Gautier is off as soon as the peloton starts the climb. Italian Champion Ulissi is fast to follow as is Betancourt.
More follow and the gap is closed quickly. Just as the attacks quickly closes the gap to the weakest of the breakers.
Kimeli is alone ahead at this point being chased by Lang, Cardoso and Agnoli with less than a minute to the peloton.
With just over a km to the top we have the first big casualty in Mehr-Wenige.
Froome and Monfort opens the next wave of attacks right before the summit.
The situation when Kimeli starts the climb for the 2nd time:
And Froome is off again.
This time him and Monfort gets a gap and quickly passes Lang leaving only the Kenyan out in front.
3 km from the Finish line Froome reaches Kimeli having left Monfort further behind. The QuickStep rider is starting to look tired though.
He gets away alone with 2,5 km left. The gaps are tiny but with gradients around 18% every gap can be crucial.
