After yesterdays team time trial we have some gaps with some GC riders seriously struggle early on.
Todays stage though should give them some time to relax a bit as it`s rated as another sprinter stage.
That said it`s not really looking like one with 2 Cat.2 climbs and last one not far from the finish.
So the sprinters who want to take todays stage first have to show some climbing skills.
The first Cat.2 is reached and a few riders are ahead of the peloton, but it`s too early to call it the break of the day.
But here already the result on top:
Devine
Kinoshita
Gyurov
Williams
Allonca
A bit later the gap is bigger and those 5 riders form the breakaway with KoM leader Allonca in there, even though he just grabbed 2 points today having a total of 14 now with Devine being up to 16 already and being in the provisional lead. So the next KoM might give us a better decision.
A bit behind desperately trying to join the group is the Aussie Rohan Dennis. But the gap is just melting very slowly, which costs him a lot of energy.
Next KoM and again the US American Devine as first with Kinoshita and Williams following.
His gap is already up to 8 points now and also Kinoshita with 12 points is gaining on Allonca.
Also the next KoM is taken by Devine who nicely collecting a good amount of points before the biggest mountains.
Kinoshita being 2nd again is in the provisional 2nd now while Gyurov takes the last 2 points.
Again Allonca without a point, which might pretty sure lose him the jersey after this stage.
Hollister and airBaltic take care of the gap as both send two riders to the front. With 65km left they are 2min behind Dennis still being a lonely rider out there with the breakaway being another 1'30 ahead.
Only sprint of the day and Kinoshita is fastest with Gyurov and Williams following. But normally this shouldn`t be of any interest in a few stages when all of them are expected to be far behind in the GC and point rankings.
Also the gap is down to 2'36 with Dennis being caught by the peloton.
On the 2nd half of the last climb the slopes went above 10% which destroyed the breakaway completely.
So for the first time today it`s not Devine winning the KoM sprint.
As first over the line comes Kinoshita collecting 26 point in total today.
Devine still coming over as 2nd having 36 points now leading the ranking after collecting 30 of those today.
Williams, Gyurov and Allonca follow next. So last one only took 4 points today, which move him up to 16 points but down to 3rd in the ranking.
15km left and the peloton still has 136 riders in it. So they obviously didn`t go full speed. But now being on the descent it`s airBaltic and Team WWE going fast.
Ahead of them they already see Allonca and Gyurov while Kinoshita is still 2'38 ahead with Devine and Williams following 30s later.
10km to go and Kinoshita sees his chance to take a great win as he keeps the ~30s gap to his two former companions and almost 2min to the peloton.
5km and still Kinoshita in front. But he is the last as the others are all caught and in the background you also see that he is not really having a big gap now. Only 30s and this will be very close as the sprinter teams are pushing hard.
2,2km and the gap went up a bit again to 38s.
But the peloton behind started the sprint now. Due to the climbs and the very high speed in the end the sprint once again is not that much organized with lots of tired helpers. So it`s only Paulinho forming some kind of WWE train for Greipel.
Paulinho Greipel Serebriakov Rowe Haidar Anuawar Mezgec Farrar Eefting Sieberg Marentes Santos Cooke Chicchi Vesely Tzortzakis Salleh Manan Silvestre Castaneda
The gap to Kinoshita obviously melts a lot now with Paulinho doign a brilliant job for quite some time now.
An even better job Rowe is doing on the left. Bad for him that he is no leadout. So Mezgec and Farrar in a great position as well.
Serebriakov struggles. So is Greipel.
In front and almost equal with poor Kinoshita are Rowe, Mezgec and Farrar. So the former left side of the sprint trains. Rowe honestly is doing a fantastaic job today as he was in the wind early while other sprinters can`t follow already, who were in a much better position.
Kinoshita is caught. Very unlucky as he survived until 500m to go.
Mezgec in the lead now and neither Farrar nor Rowe can follow.
Instead Greipel and Sieberg seem to have recovered a bit again and come fast.
Great win for Mezgec. He had the perfect wheel and obviously also great legs in the end.
Sieberg as the better climber obviously surprises with a strong 2nd for Volkswagen while Marentes in 3rd had the best sprint of all I guess.
The Hollister rider also steps up to finish 3rd today.
Bruno Santos as 4th also with a fast finish. Better positioning could have delivered him a podium though.
Greipel as 5th and Farrar as 6th can be happy I guess when looking on the profile.
Popov, Vesely, Khripta and surprisingly Cooke complete the top10.
So Manan as 11th, Rowe 14th, Castaneda 16th and Serebriakov 18th miss the top spots today.
Rohan Dennis with a very lonely day. First riding most of the time solo in between. Then directly losing contact to the peloton to finish 21min behind. At least he got some "support" this time by control team rider Löwik.
Tomorrows stage will be the first hill rated and as some slopes are really tough, we might see some guys struggling a lot.
