So Stage 2, and we start at sea level, before climbing to over 1000 metres and then descending into the finish. The hills early on are tough but the gradient drops in the last 50km and it will be difficult to make any attacks stick.
The biggest favourites today are the best puncheurs in the Continetal TOur, Bellis, Ginanni, Roche and Froome.
As we start to climb no one has yet been allowed clear.
4 riders are finally allowed to get a gap: Nel (MTN), Boswell (HTC), Vauvourzeix (RBC) and Didier (WWE)
Boswell manages to get the jump on Vauvourzeix to win the first climb, Didier trails in third, with Nel really struggling to keep up.
The hill accounts for Konovalovas who was sleeping at the back of the peloton and is now 2'35" behind.
The peloton isn't chasing though, so it's easy for him to get back.
Over the second climb it's Vauvourzeix who is first, with Didier in second and Boswell third
Four riders pretend to be going for mountain points, but then push hard on the downhill to build up a 90 second gap: Vansummeren (BPS), Huzarski (LUK), Pakthusov (MTI) and Acevedo (REP)
Vauvourzeix again just pips Didier for the sprint point, Nel is thirty second behind these three and it looks like he will have a long day.
2'41" behind the break, who are 4'21" ahead of the peloton, the chasers come through the sprint point.
with 50km to go Nel has made it back to the leaders, with the chasers just 1 minute behind them.
and the chasers catch the break, these 8 riders can now push on and really pressurise the peloton, who have let the gap grow to 3'11". Metinvest must be feeling very clever right now, as Pakthusov is just setting in, pretending that Hoffman is their overall leader.
In the peloton Vespa have become fed up with ING's insipid pacemaking and are now trying to close the gap.
The camraderie in the break is shattered briefly as Huzarski sprints ahead of Vauvourzeix and Vansummeren.
The sprint caused a gap and Nel finally seems to have been dropped for good.
Behind ING and Vespa are working well together and have reduced the gap to 2'30"
Didier and Boswell can also no longer keep up. Now just 30km to go.
Nel is pulled back as the gap to the leaders drops below 2 minutes.
Huzarski wins the final climb from Vansummeren, Acevedo is third.
Boswell and Didier are pulled back at the top of the climb. The leaders are 1'28" ahead with 28km for them to ride.
Vauvourzeix tries an attack just after the 20km banner, seeing this Huzarski follows, and the others sit up.
Metinvest now start helping, trying to close the 38 second gap and keep Hoffman in yellow.
And we catch the final attackers with 13km to go as we begin the descent to the line.
Metinvest are trying to slow the pace to allow Hoffman to recover enough energy to win the sprint. Huzarski decides he's not done today and attacks.
Metinvest are still trying to finesse this, allowing Huzarski to get a 25 second gap. Vespa now move to shut it down.
Huzarski still has a small gap as the sprint starts with 2.3km to go, the twisting descent stopped the peloton gaining much of an advantage.
Hoffman and Bellis are leading the peloton now.
There is nothing between the two of them with 800 metres to go. Huzarski has been swallowed up.
Hoffman and Bellis are still side by side. Roche is now in third.
Finally Hoffman runs out of steam and Bellis moves into the lead.
Schreurs and Ben Nasser come from no where and we are 5 abreast coming up to the line. Can Bellis hold on?
And Schreurs passes Bellis on the line. Heat-braking for Bellis. Ben Nasser gets third, just ahead of Roche, with Hoffman only coming 5th.
Hoffman can console himself with the thought that he is in yellow for another day, and is looking a very solid favourite for the green jersey.
