A similar stage than yesterdays, which led to some damage for some riders. Difference though that it`s flat rated and finishes with a flat.
So the most interesting things might be to see if the sprinters can survive those hills today or will the GC riders again fight for every second?
It took until the first KoM to form the breakaway. In the end we have 3 riders after a lot more did attack actually.
John Devine is interesting as the KoM leader sees a great chance to improve his lead today with so many points to get.
The other two are Van Ooijen and Mundle. Both without any KoM points yet.
It`s already the 4th KoM but all worked the same with Devine attacking to get the maximum while the others were not interested at all.
So in total we saw those points for them:
John Devine ANC-Halfords 21 Cornelius Van Ooijen Team Bintang 11 Benedikt Mundle Sauber Petronas Racing 7
Amex and airBaltic do the pace behind. They obviously believe in their chance today with Farrar and Rowe. So they higher the pace now as we hit the last 90km with a gap of almost 7min.
Great scenery here on the US West Coast heading towards San Francisco today.
Again Devine takes the KoM here with Mundle and Van Ooijen following.
35km to go and the gap is down to 3min. This could be very close in the end but the hardest part is yet to come.
Here is a short look on the hills. As you can see the slopes are not easy and in especially the 2nd is tough with ~16% slopes.
24km left and Devine has gapped the others now.
40s in between them and another 1'36 to the peloton.
Sousa is the first with a late attack. So he obviously sees a chance to beat the sprinters on that profile as he catches the two other breakaway riders.
On top of the 2nd Cat.2 KoM with the highest slopes we see that Devine is almost caught.
Behind him Zaini, Pellizotti, Sousa and Zaballa come over the line, which means we have more movement as Zaini and Pellizotti highered the pace by a lot on those slopes.
15km and 3 riders, who attacked on the climb are now a bit ahead.
It`s Vrecer
Zaini
Pellizotti
So we see some GC riders in here, which of course highers the pace by a lot.
Lots of splits now and the favourite group behind those three is down to 16!
This is not a lot and some GC riders are missing. So here an overview of those riders.
Beltran
Kiserlovski
Anton
Zaballa
Ratiy
Gadret
Pancake
Peraud
Khripta
Ardila
Lowe
Kebede
Kashechkin
Sousa
Krasnoperov
Dieteren
So we have most of the biggest names and also those riders that missed the split yesterday in Ratiy or Krasnoperov, who have learned from their mistake.
Just a few seconds behind we have the first group of dropped riders like
Nicacio
Agudelo
Dyachenko
and even a bit further behind most other GC riders and puncheurs like Jiao, Jiriakov, Cabreira or again Stetina, who can`t go over those hills.
Zaini and Vrecer have reached Devine while Pellizotti is still in between those and the favourites.
Next KoM and Zaini easily takes it ahead of Vrecer. They are only a duo now as Devine is back in the favourites group as also Pellizotti.
40s gap for them.
Last KoM and again Zaini beats Vrecer, who is almost caught now. So again a Meiji rider in front solo.
4 riders are still behind the group in Nicacio, Dyachenko, Paulinho and Agudelo.
But last one obviously have no interest to chase with their leaders in front. So it`s 2 riders against a 16 riders group. Tough job for them and so the gap is up to more than 1min already. Nicacio will most likely lose his podium today but reducing the gap would be important to keep a good GC in general.
5km left and 20s only for Zaini. We know this situation already but the last time it was Kinoshita, who was then beaten on the last 300m.
In the group no one really wants to be the guy in the front and Beltran who did the work most of the time for Kiserlovski is one of the dropped riders behind.
Lowe, Ardila, Gadret are the first riders to start the sprint with Kashechkin, Kiserlovski, Anton and Vrecer behind.
So close for that stage win.
But the later are stronger and pass them. So it`s all about bonus seconds now for the biggest GC riders.
Or not? Gadret with a strong comeback going into the lead now. Only Zaini is still in front having a very small gap.
But this time Meiji is lucky as Zaini celebrates a great win. It`s the first Meiji win in this years Tour of America and it was exactly the reason why they nominated their top puncheur for this race.
Gadret indeed surprises with a strong sprint for 2nd ahead of Kashechkin, who improves his lead this way by a bit.
Kiserlovski and Anton follow next. So we have all hte biggest GC riders in front today.
Dyachenko leads in the next group with Nicacio. Both lose 1'37 today. Surely a bit surprising when seeing that far weaker puncheurs like Ratiy, Kebede or Krasnoperov finished ahead of them.
The sprint of the peloton is almost 6min later where Mezgec easily wins ahead of Sieberg and Rowe.
So the sprinters got no chance on that course today but the biggest disappointments in here are Stetina, Cabreira, Txurruka, Jiriakov, Barton, Danielson, Osella, Lewis or Jiao, who all were expected a bit stronger GC wise.
