Today brings the first of four key stages – the 43.5km time trial around Nice. A lot hinges on today’s result, not least the fight for the yellow jersey between Cunego and Madrazo. Just 27 seconds separate the two and while the Spaniard is a much better TT rider Cunego has a history of pulling out great TT performances in the final week. Let’s see what happens today. There are two intermediate checks out on course – one after 16km and the other after 29km.
First, though, we have to get through the early time trial riders who will be looking to battle for at least a top ten at the end of the day. The first man out of the gate should give us a good benchmark time for these riders – Kristof Vandewalle. He is fairly strong in this discipline and while he is just hanging on to the race he might still be decent today. His time at the first check is 23’39” and at the second check it is 42’18”.
He finishes the course in 1h03’03”. It remains to be seen how good that is.
The next time trialist out of the start house is Maciej Bodnar. The Polish TT champion was a solid 22nd in the earlier time trial and this one should suit him even more. His time at the first mark is a new best of 23’28”. He keeps this up with a new best at the second mark with a time of 41’54”.
He also sets a new best time for the day so far of 1h02’37”, shaving almost 30” off the previous best.
About 10 riders later it is time for William Bonnet. He was just outside the top 10 in his last time trial and without Coppel here he is one of the best hopes that the French have for a strong ride today. At the first check he sets a new best time of 23’11”. He keeps this form through to the second check with a time of 41’25”.
True to what he showed earlier he sets a new beset at the finish line too, this time as the first person under 62 minutes – 1h01’54” is his time.
Not far behind him on the course is Ronan Van Zandbeek. The Dutch rouleur rarely features in these kinds of races at this level but with so many riders having dropped out this is a great opportunity. He has a strong first section with a time of 23’19”, just 8” down. His time at the second check is 41’44”, still putting him in second place provisionally.
Finally he finishes in 1h02’20”, 26” down but still second place.
In the previous time trial Maxime Bouet was a fairly abysmal 77th, perhaps because of the small amount of climbing on the route. Today’s route will suit him much more and he comes into the stage as another French hope for today. His first time truly justifies that as he goes through in 22’51”. This puts him 2 seconds ahead of Bonnet. His time at the 29km mark is 41’24”, again the best but this time with just a 1” lead.
And at the end Bouet beats his compatriot and takes the best time out on course in 1h01’50”.
Bouet, Bonnet and Van Zandbeek remain at the head of the leaderboard for quite a while with a number of other time trialists challenging but never quite being close enough. The next big name challenger is Jacob Fiedler. He was 5th in the earlier TT and without Coppel comes into the stage as one of the biggest favourites. His time at the first check is a new best – 22’51”. That puts him almost 20 seconds ahead already. His second check shows a time of 40’47”.
Finally he finishes the course in 1h00’56”, the only rider to break 61 minutes so far. The German certainly looks like a solid leader.
About 40 riders pass before we get the other biggest favourite of the day - Mikhail Ignatiev. The Russian came second in the previous TT, beating Fiedler by 17 seconds. Can he do that today or will the lack of climbing in fact work against him? At the first check it doesn’t look good as Ignatiev goes through in 23’10”, already 19” down and only good enough for fourth. He improvese slightly through the second check with a time of 41’23”, moving him up to third place provisionally.
But Ignatiev just couldn’t pull one out of the hat today and he goes through in 1h01’49”. He will be glad that it is enough to move him up to second place, however.
So with that we move from the time trial favourites into the realm of the GC riders, some of whom are also favourites for today. As we hit the top 20 here is the provisional leaders’ boards:

Though he hasn’t got a lot to ride for in GC, given that his position is fairly secure, Tanel Kangert is riding for a strong showing today. He is a strong TT rider and, given his ability in the mountains, he has probably recovered better than some of the others. His time at the first check is a provisional 5tth place – 23’19”. At the second check he manages 5th once again, with a time of 41’33”.
Kangert finishes today’s 43.5km long course in 1h01’56”, exactly 1 minute down and good enough for the same provisional fifth that he has held all day.
Most of the following riders aren’t particularly good in this discipline and nor are there any GC fights between them so we can move straight on to the top 15. Valls is up first, the third best placed Santander rider. He has little to fight for today. He is over a minute behind the next rider on GC and comfortably ahead of Lopez Garcia in 16th. His time at the first check is 23’45” and at the second check he performs decently with 42’25”.
Valls finishes the course with a solid 37th place – 1h03’04” is his time.
The fight between 13th and 14th is worth taking note of. Thomas Faiers, one of the biggest surprises of this race, starts the day 14” behind wildcard leader David Abal. The two are fairly evenly matched in this discipline so it will be interesting to see what happens today. Faiers goes through the first check in 23’35”, a fairly strong ride. At the second check his time is 42’07”.
The young rider finishes the course in 1h02’45”, strong enough for 25th but will it be strong enough to overcome the gap to Abal?
David Abal has constantly animated this race and now he gets his chance to go solo. Remember that the gap is only 14” at the start of the day, with the Spaniard ahead. At the first check the wildcard rider clearly has nothing to worry about – his time of 23’16” is good enough for provisional fifth place. He backs this up with a second time of 41’32”, extending the gap back to Faiers.
Abal finishes in 1h01’55”, once again taking fifth place but more importantly putting another 50” into Faiers.
It was mentioned that some of the GC favourites were also stage favourites. You would be hard pressed to find a bigger favourite than Aleksandr Pluchkin. He has had more than his fair share of bad luck in this race but a stage win here would at least salvage things somewhat. Not only that but a great ride could see him get back into the top ten today. The standings are:
10
Peter Velits
Project 1t4i
+ 11'42
11
Bernhard Kohl
Pendleton's
+ 12'33
12
Aleksandr Pluchkin
Team B&O
+ 12'39
So Pluchkin powers out onto the course and his time at the first check is strong – 22’58” is good enough for 2nd place only 7” down. He continues on and goes through the second check in 41 minutes flat – now he is 13” down and the chance of a win are getting more remote.
And indeed a time of 1h01’10” falls 14 seconds short but there is no shame in second place on a Tour de France stage.
As shown Kohl starts the day 6 seconds ahead of Pluchkin and if he were to hold on to that it would be an absolute miracle. Indeed with his first time of 24’02” he has already lost more than a minute to the Moldovan. Things are no better at the second check with a time of 42’56”.
And Kohl finishes in 1h03’53”, 66th place on the day. It looks like Kohl will start tomorrow in 12th place.
Peter Velits is likely to put up a bit more resistance than was offered by Kohl. He needs to avoid losing 57” today to hold on to his top ten place. His time at the first check is 23’23”, meaning that 25” are already dropped. His time at the second check is 41’44”, leaving him with 13” left to sacrifice to hold on. This should be close.
And his time at the end is 1h02’13”, putting Pluchkin 6 seconds ahead of him and into the top 10. Velits drops to 11th but has a decent buffer in that position.
The next three places are also locked in a tight battle:
7
Walter Pedraza
Koenigsegg
+ 8'10
8
Janez Brajkovic
Heineken presented by California Giant Berry Farms
+ 8'21
9
Andrei Amador
UBS - BMC
+ 8'38
It will be interesting to see which of Amador and Brajkovic has the better day as they are quite similar. Amador is up first and he starts the course off with a time of 23’09”, good enough for fourth at the moment and really piling the pressure on. At the second check his time is 41’21”, which moves him up to third at the moment.
Amador holds this position with a time of 1h01’38”. Will this be enough to move back up the board into 7th?
Brajkovic comes out now. As mentioned he is fairly evenly matched with the Costa Rican so his 17” lead might prove useful. His time at the first check proves that he may not need it, however, as he goes through in 23’02”, extending his lead by another 7 seconds. At the second time check Brajkovic’s time is 41’10”, now putting him provisionally 3rd.
Finally his time at the finish line is 1h01’23”, good enough for provisional third and likely enough to move him up a place on GC.
Another surprising rider of this race is Pedraza, who has been sitting deep in the top ten for most of the race now. That looks likely to change as his time at the first check is 23’51”, already dropping him below both of the challengers for his position. At the second check the time for the South American is 42’36”.
Pedraza comes through the final banner with a time of 1h03’26”, which is a fairly poor 54th. So Pedraza will drop to 9th place but will still have a decent gap over Pluchkin.
While Romain Sicard can’t exactly relax today he still will be glad to know that he isn’t exactly under huge pressure. He has about 2 minutes over the riders who just finished and he is 1’41” behind 5th place Tenorio. So Sicard just has to put in a decent time and his sixth place can remain secure. His time at the first check is a very good 23’28”. At the second check the time remains strong at 41’54”.
Finally he finishes in 1h02’26”, good enough for 17th at the moment and more than enough to defend his position.
The next rider up, Justo Tenorio, is also under no real pressure. The difference is that he comes in as an outsider for the stage win. Will the work he has been doing in the past fortnight affect his ride today? His time at the first check would suggest otherwise as he goes through in 23’02”, provisionally third. He keeps this up at the second check, maintaining his third place in a time of 41’06”.
The time at the finish is 1h01’19”, good enough for third with only four riders to come. A strong ride by the Spanish champion indeed.
Though Benat Intxausti probably isn’t a direct threat to the podium today, he starts the day 38” down on Andy Schleck and will hope to narrow that down. Certainly Intxausti is the better TT rider of the two. He starts off the course with a decent time of 23’18”, just outside the top ten. At the second check his time is 41’34”.
With a provisional 11th time of 1h02’00” Intxausti finishes the course. That is actually quite a good time and may well prove enough to overcome the rider from Luxembourg.
Andy Schleck is up next and needs a time of 1h02’38” or better to hold on to his podium place. He will have to accept that moving higher than third in the next few days is almost impossible unless there is some sort of disaster so defending third at this point is all that matters. At the first check his time is 23’29”, meaning that 11” have been lost so far. He loses another 12” with his time of 41’57” at the second check. This time could actually be closer than anticipated.
Schleck finishes the course in... 1h02’29”, keeping third place by 9 seconds and forcing Intxausti to try to overcome him in the mountains.
And now we have the contest that everyone has been waiting for – the fight for the yellow jersey! Madrazo starts the day 27” behind race leader Cunego. Though Madrazo is a much better TT rider, Cunego has a history of strong time trials in the final week thanks to his remarkable ability to recover.
Angel Madrazo gets the chance to make a big movement towards his first ever Tour de France victory today. He sets off and at the first check it is clear that he means business – his time is 22’56” and that is good enough for provisional second place. He keeps up this high tempo and at the second check he is still in provisional second with a time of 40’56”.
And just like that Madrazo sets the second best time of the day with 1h01’04”. The pressure on Cunego is now huge.
Cunego leaves the starthouse in yellow. He has to finish in a time of 1h01’31” in order to finish the day in that same colour, otherwise he will be forced to take back the time in the coming three mountain stages. He sets out on course and it is clear that this is not one of his best days on the bike. His time at the first check is 23’43”, meaning that he has already lost his whole advantage. His time at the second check is 42’21”, putting him more than a minute down and slipping further away.
Cunego finishes the course and he can only manage the 45th best time on the day – 1h03’04”. That puts Madrazo into the yellow jersey with a rather large gap of 1’33”. That is a rather formidable gap and it will be interesting to see whether the Italian will be content with second place or if he will try to close that gap with some serious attacking in the mountains.
So Angel Madrazo wears yellow tonight and there are three mountain stages in which he may well be forced to defend it.
