It's a calm sunny day to the start of the Tour of Colorado, which is a delight for the riders as snow is in the seven day forecast for later in tour. Although the bookmakers are favouring the sprinters with Benoît Sinner, Michael Vingerling, and Simon Clarke they should be concerned about just making it to the finish with the a very tough climb coming in the last part of the stage.
The first attacks of the day come from,
Reekers, De Weert
Cimolai
Diaz Corrales
Walsleben
Colby
So very early we see two riders from Proximus and the D2 team comes out and gets Colby in the action right away.
Shortly after more riders attack,
Cruz
Bol
Beyer
Ajewole, Armstrong
9 of the 16 teams now are represented in the breakaway with CSC and Proximus both managing to sneak two riders in.
WWE controls the race well and keeps the first attacks within a minute so given the opportunity a few more attack.
Zapunkte
Orozco
Pirazzi
D'Andrea
But all this does is bring everyone back together.
Thus stiring up more attacks. Old faces include De Weert, Colby, Beyer, Corrales, Pirazzi, Bol, and Ajewole. Plus,
Zaballa
Cinolai
Duenas Nevado
After a few late joiners,
Walsleben
D'Andrea, Tizza
Orozco
This becomes the breakaway of the day.
A few bonus seconds at the sprint go to Nevado (6 seconds), Zaballa (4 seconds), and Tizza (2 seconds), Which could bump them up the overall standings at the end of day.
Bad Luck for Reekers as he goes from opening attacker to out of the race after a brutal crash with 71kms to go.
The pace isn't to the liking of both Coenen and Criel so they attack with 60kms to go.
However their attacks tick off the peloton into chasing.
And just like that everyone is pulled back with 38kms to go.
The peloton continues without attacks to the top of the climb where
Diniz
Peterson
Astarloza
Ghyllebert
Colby
Just roll over the line to collect the KoM points. Strange to see no attacks considering who won would wear the jersey tomorrow.
Simon Clarke either wasn't paying attention or just wasn't feeling well today is he is the only top sprinter to get dropped. He joins many of the first attackers of the day 2 minutes behind the peloton. And with just 16kms to go it's going to hard for them to rejoin the peloton.
(So no picture for some reason ...)
As the riders reach the sprint checkpoint, unlike the KoM a few kilometers ago, the sprinters actually fight each other for it.
Jorgensen
Vingerling
Sinner
in that order. Challenging them was D'Amore, Loddo, and Uugunbayar.
With 7kms to go, the D2 team is creating more drama as Laurent Mangel attacks followed by Coenen.
Mangel is brought back rather quickly, but Coenen isn't giving up so easily.
Coenen is in sight as the peloton whips around to see the 1km to go banner. But something is missing ... the sprinters! After contesting the sprint point they have vanished from the front of the peloton! The yellow jersey and the stage win is really up for grabs now.
Sérgio Sousa leads them to the line roaring past Coenen in this strange finish.
Hassen Ben Nasser
Magno Nazaret
Arnold Jeannesson
are fighting it out close behind.
GC contender Nazaret takes a surprising win as the sprinters decided not to show up at the finish today. 2nd Hassen Ben Nasser, 3rd Sérgio Sousa.
It's a log jam for the minor placing, Jonathan Castroviejo, Marco Osella, Hector Duenas Nevado, Arnold Jeannesson, Gabriele Bosisio, David Belda, and Pierre Rolland round out the top 10. Pre-race favourite Sinner finishes 57th, as most of the other sprinters finish between 40-60. But even worse was Clarke, who got dropped and never managed to come back. If stage 1 foreshadows the rest of the tour, he have ourselves an unpredictable race.
