Tour of Eritrea - Stage 4
ember

The fourth stage is likely to be the decisive one thinking of the general classification. It’s 94 kilometers long and rated hilly with two tough hills in the final 20 kilometers of racing. It will also be an uphill sprint to the finish line, meaning we should see some changes in the GC.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Arroyo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Devolder
are stage favourites according to the bookmakers.

Yesterday we had some serious wind that had impact on the racing. That’s unlikely to happen today as there’s literally no wind as the riders line up for this short and intense stage.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0065_zps9d920c51.png

Six riders are the lucky escapees today, and with 72 kilometers left their lead is up to 3’30. The riders in the breakaway are

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Grosu
decides late that he should join the fun up the road. He bridges the gap with 50 kilometers to go, making it seven riders in the lead, 4’20 ahead of the peloton.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0067_zps700800bc.png

The breakaway riders are determined to build their lead as big as possible, no one cares for the intermediate sprint and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas
rolls through first. Their advantage back to the peloton is 4’30 45 kilometers away from home.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0068_zpsab989c0d.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png ING Cycling Project
just keeps riding at the front back in the peloton, but they definitely not push the pace. 31 kilometers left and the breakaway’s lead is up to five minutes.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0069_zps6006dee8.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas
is the only one in the breakaway attacking for the mountain points with 17 kilometers left. He takes the six points on offer meaning he has 11 in total.
The breakaway is now 4’25 ahead of the peloton, they’re definitely starting to look good for the stage win.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0070_zpsc74226e9.png

Back in the peloton nothing happens before
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo
attacks with 1.4 kilometers to the top of the climb. He lost valuable time yesterday and must hope that his early attack will reward him gaining some placings in the overall standing.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0071_zps9c4bc13a.png

It’s a good attack by the Italian! He flies over the mountain 3’45 behind the breakaway and no less than 45 seconds ahead of the peloton with 17 kilometers to go!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0072_zps69394383.png

This must be a special climb, as all the riders in the peloton are going over the summit with their bikes up in the air. It’s still all
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png ING Cycling Project
at the front. They’re 4’30 behind the breakaway and 45 seconds behind Carrara.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0073_zps23e74700.png

3.8 kilometers to go for the breakaway and with a gap of three minutes back to Cataldo the stage win is about them.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Lemus Davila
realize just that and gets a small gap back to the five others.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0074_zpsf5046570.png

The five other breakaway riders can’t close the gap and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Lemus Davila
starts his sprint and bid for the stage victory with 1200 meters left!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0075_zps9a638f33.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas
is trying to respond, but it looks like he can’t find the right gear! Lemus Davila and MTN-Qhubeka are heading towards a surprising win here!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0076_zps948fd80e.png

Back to the overall contenders for a quick look, and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo
still holds a gap of 35 seconds to the bunch with 2.300 meters left.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0077_zps472ccb2c.png

Only 400 meters left of the stage and

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas
have clearly pushed themselves too hard before the sprint! They’re literally going backwards compared to

are struggling to make it past the Mexican.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.png Goos
just makes it! A superb stage victory for the Dutch talent. He timed his sprint to perfection and managed to sneak past
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Lemus Davila
on the last hundred meters. The Mexican must settle with second.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Salgueiro
rounds of the podium with

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Grosu
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ubi_zps47ce5481.png Priamo
following behind on the same time.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0081_zpsdc2f7a70.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Teruel
was the weakest puncheur in the breakaway, which shows well as he’s home for seventh 50 seconds behind the stage winner.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0082_zps06c426c9.png

Then it’s
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo
who gets rewarded for his attack getting eight and a time gap back to the peloton.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Betancur
did an incredible sprint and storms home on the same time as the Italian. He was the only one in the peloton able to bridge the gap.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Chaabane
leads the peloton home about three minutes behind the breakaway. 83 riders finish on the same time. Sorry for not getting a picture of that, I simply forgot to take it and didn't realize it until it was too late.
