Volta a Portugal - stage 7
ember
i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/portugal7.jpg

Many riders must look forward to the 7th stage of this year’s Volta a Portugal. It’s the longest stage of the race, but it’s a flat one, where the riders should be allowed to save their energy, after two consecutive days of hard racing between the overall favourites.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Lininguponceagain.jpg

Just like yesterday, there’s beautiful weather, the sun shines and the wind is silent, it should be a good day of racing for the riders. Considering it’s a flat stage, the favourites for the stage win aren’t surprising. It’s
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Kip
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Cucinotta
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Sinner
who’s given the lowest odds for a stage win.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Breakawayof5-1.jpg

The first attacks are successful, and 5 riders make the early breakaway today. They’re:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Passeron
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Hardy
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Jeandesbosz
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Tizza
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Bonnin

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Jeandesbosztakesfirstsprint.jpg

It’s clear the peloton wants a day of the office today, as the breakaway holds a lead of 5 minutes rolling through the first intermediate sprint. It’s
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Jeandesbosz
who rolls over first for the 6 sprint points.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Severalteamschasinginpeloton.jpg

On the flat before today’s first classified climb, several teams are contributing to the chase back in the peloton. They’re controlling the breakaway well, as their gap is 6 minutes with 168 kilometers left.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/PasseronwinstheKoM.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Passeron
takes the maximum 6 mountain points on today’s stage, as he’s the only one attacking for the points with 140 kilometers left. The breakaway is going well, as they’ve extended their lead to 9’40.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Passeroncontinueshiswinningstreak.jpg

The second intermediate sprint is like the first one not contested, this time it’s
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Passeron
who rolls over first. The gap back to the peloton is still more than 9 minutes.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/ProximusworkingforKip.jpg

90 kilometers to go, and Proximus is starting to work at the front.
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Kip
had no problems riding the peloton’s pace on the early hills and climbs, and Proximus now takes responsibility to bring the attackers back. They’re chasing 7 minutes behind at the moment.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Breakawayrollingon.jpg

The breakaway is riding on, and with 42 kilometers to go, you can definitely not write them off! Their advantage is 3’50.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Pelotonoverfinishline1sttime.jpg

Crossing the finishing line for the first time with 27 kilometers left, the peloton controls the breakaway very well. They’ve cut the gap to 1’50, meaning it should be more than possible to chase them down on the two finishing laps of a 13.5 kilometers long circuit.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Passeronwithanattack.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Passeron
gives it one last try, attacking with 17 kilometers left. The peloton is only 45 seconds behind, meaning something has to be done.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Meersmanwithlateattack.jpg

Not everyone in the peloton is ready for a sprint, and
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Meersman
attacks with 16 kilometers left!

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Brandthaseverythinginsight.jpg

But
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Brandt
has them all in sight with one lap to go. It’s
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Passeron
who leads, with
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Hardy
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Meersman
just behind him.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Brandtbringsthemback.jpg

11 kilometers to go, and everything is back together. It’s still
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Brandt
doing the work at the front.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Liningupwith5km.jpg

5 kilometers to go, and we see the sprinters lining up, though, it isn’t very organized.
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png De Weert & Kopp
is at the head of the bunch, followed by
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Sinner
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Marinangeli
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Lima
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Haedo
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Cucinotta
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Santos
In the middle of road,
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Poulhies
tries to find himself a wheel, he’s followed by
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Kip
On the right side of the road
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Eastman
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Pellizotti
are staying out of trouble.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Koppfinallylaunchesthesprint.jpg

No one really wants to open the sprint, resulting in no one goes for it before there’s only 1400 meters left to the line!
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Kopp
is at the front, with
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Kip
coming on his right.
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Sinner
is looking good in Kopp’s wheel.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Costafromnowhere.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Costa
uses the opportunity to launch his sprint from a good way behind, and 700 meters from the line, he’s leading the stage!
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Marinangeli
challenges on the right, with
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Haedo
a couple of meters behind.
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Santos
is holding the fastest bike, down the middle of the road, but there’s only 700 meters to go.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Marinangeliwins.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Marinangeli
takes Venchi’s second stage win here in Portugal! He timed his sprint to perfection, and just holds off
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Santos
who must settle for 2nd place.

i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq146/emberland_2008/Limatakesthird.jpg

Fellow countrymen of Santos,
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Lima
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Costa
follows in 3rd and 4th.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Pellizotti
does a good sprint, taking 5th, ahead of a fading
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Haedo

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Sinner
never got going, and he barely beats his overall captain
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Eastman
for 7th place.
