Many riders must look forward to the 7th stage of this year’s Volta a Portugal. It’s the longest stage of the race, but it’s a flat one, where the riders should be allowed to save their energy, after two consecutive days of hard racing between the overall favourites.
Just like yesterday, there’s beautiful weather, the sun shines and the wind is silent, it should be a good day of racing for the riders. Considering it’s a flat stage, the favourites for the stage win aren’t surprising. It’s
Kip
Cucinotta
Sinner
who’s given the lowest odds for a stage win.
The first attacks are successful, and 5 riders make the early breakaway today. They’re:
Passeron
Hardy
Jeandesbosz
Tizza
Bonnin
It’s clear the peloton wants a day of the office today, as the breakaway holds a lead of 5 minutes rolling through the first intermediate sprint. It’s
Jeandesbosz
who rolls over first for the 6 sprint points.
On the flat before today’s first classified climb, several teams are contributing to the chase back in the peloton. They’re controlling the breakaway well, as their gap is 6 minutes with 168 kilometers left.
Passeron
takes the maximum 6 mountain points on today’s stage, as he’s the only one attacking for the points with 140 kilometers left. The breakaway is going well, as they’ve extended their lead to 9’40.
The second intermediate sprint is like the first one not contested, this time it’s
Passeron
who rolls over first. The gap back to the peloton is still more than 9 minutes.
90 kilometers to go, and Proximus is starting to work at the front.
Kip
had no problems riding the peloton’s pace on the early hills and climbs, and Proximus now takes responsibility to bring the attackers back. They’re chasing 7 minutes behind at the moment.
The breakaway is riding on, and with 42 kilometers to go, you can definitely not write them off! Their advantage is 3’50.
Crossing the finishing line for the first time with 27 kilometers left, the peloton controls the breakaway very well. They’ve cut the gap to 1’50, meaning it should be more than possible to chase them down on the two finishing laps of a 13.5 kilometers long circuit.
Passeron
gives it one last try, attacking with 17 kilometers left. The peloton is only 45 seconds behind, meaning something has to be done.
Not everyone in the peloton is ready for a sprint, and
Meersman
attacks with 16 kilometers left!
But
Brandt
has them all in sight with one lap to go. It’s
Passeron
who leads, with
Hardy
Meersman
just behind him.
11 kilometers to go, and everything is back together. It’s still
Brandt
doing the work at the front.
5 kilometers to go, and we see the sprinters lining up, though, it isn’t very organized.
De Weert & Kopp
is at the head of the bunch, followed by
Sinner
Marinangeli
Lima
Haedo
Cucinotta
Santos
In the middle of road,
Poulhies
tries to find himself a wheel, he’s followed by
Kip
On the right side of the road
Eastman
Pellizotti
are staying out of trouble.
No one really wants to open the sprint, resulting in no one goes for it before there’s only 1400 meters left to the line!
Kopp
is at the front, with
Kip
coming on his right.
Sinner
is looking good in Kopp’s wheel.
Costa
uses the opportunity to launch his sprint from a good way behind, and 700 meters from the line, he’s leading the stage!
Marinangeli
challenges on the right, with
Haedo
a couple of meters behind.
Santos
is holding the fastest bike, down the middle of the road, but there’s only 700 meters to go.
Marinangeli
takes Venchi’s second stage win here in Portugal! He timed his sprint to perfection, and just holds off
Santos
who must settle for 2nd place.
Fellow countrymen of Santos,
Lima
Costa
follows in 3rd and 4th.
Pellizotti
does a good sprint, taking 5th, ahead of a fading
Haedo
Sinner
never got going, and he barely beats his overall captain
Eastman
for 7th place.
