Will we see another sprint today? The terrain looks like it but still there are some tough climbs like the first Cat.1 rated hill. But once they passed it it`s a constant downhill towards the finish line.
The Australians are still waiting for their first stage win in their homerace and today might be the best chance for them as Allan Davis and Mitchel Docker both shouldn`t have much problems going over the hills. Also Oz couldn`t perform yet and might try to send someone into the breakaway.
5 riders in todays breakaway and no, there is no Oz included there as they obviously still trust in their sprinters even though todays terrain looks even worse for them:
Hansen (Pivovarna)
Hugentobler (Sauber)
Nielsen (Swedbank)
Zaballa (CSC)
Bouhanni (Meiji)
Hugentobler is 47th in the overall with only 70s behind. So the sprinter teams give all the work to UPC, who have to defend Gavazzi`s lead.
Not surprising that only Hugentobler is aiming the bonus seconds. Unchallenged he passes the line first with Hansen and Bouhanni coming next.
Pivovarna`s Hansen takes the Cat.2 climb and is also in the shared lead of 10 points but today we will surely see a change. Zaballa, Hansen, Hugentobler and a bit distanced Bouhanni coming next.
The Cat.1 should be very interesting as these riders will be able to fight out the new mountain jersey.
Hugentobler is moving forward. Taking also the 2nd sprint he is down to +58 behind Gavazzi. They really shouldn`t allow the gap to become too big.
Still no support for UPC`s young talents, who are doing a nice job so far this race. All 3 of them have a bright future ahead and will have the leader role in 2-3 years. They reduced the gap to 3'15 with 58km to go.
The riders start the 2km climb. The peloton is just 1min behind and maybe we will even see them catching the group before the KoM.
But the breakaway still wins it. Swedbank`s Nielsen takes the maximum points ahead of Hansen, Zaballa and Hugentobler. And of course we won`t see a single lead in this ranking as Nielsen is listed first but with Hansen being at 22 points as well.
Behind Bouhanni UPC is crossing the line and as the pace was too fast for attacks it`s Knees and Priamo taking the last points.
It`s rated as a flat stage but the Cat.1 might have exhausted some riders so it`s again Rocchetti (Evian) with an attack. The Italian was already one of the most active on the 2nd stage and as 23rd he is only 20s behind.
The breakaway is split into 3 groups now and none of them is far ahead.
It`s not the race for Hollister. Davis still not having won a stage. Betancourt punctured on the first stage and now it`s Sambris crashing in the final phase. He was well placed as 16th but with the high pace in the peloton he won`t come back.
16km left and the group is in sight only 40s ahead. Time for more attacks as Rocchetti was caught again.
It`s De Maar (HTC), Dyrnes (Risa) and Kadri (Vueling).
Kadri proved to be the strongest of this trio as he joins the last three of the former breakaway only 3km later while De Maar and Dyrnes already have a 49s gap. Also the peloton is another 25s behind and need to hurry up now if they want to win this stage. But as Hugentobler was already caught and only Zaballa, Hansen and Nielsen are ahead UPC reduced the pace and the sprinter teams still not doing a lot.
Nasty crash in a corner. Luckily no leader or main sprinter in there and all riders can go on their bike again. Riders involved:
Boswell (HTC)
Cardoso (Adira)
Matt (airBaltic)
Connolly (air Baltic)
Daniel (Evian)
Mundle (Sauber)
Klostergaard (Swedbank)
These riders plus Sambris and also Oz` sprinter Alex Rasmussen are now behind the peloton. Last one felt back on the Cat.1 climb and won`t deliver once again putting the pressure even more on Baden Cooke.
The group around De Maar is caught again with 10km to go. Group Kadri still has 56s advantage but UPC sees another chance for Gavazzi and are still working for him already setting a nice train.
Finally with 7,5km to go Hollister is doing the work and the breakaway is caught.
With 3km to go it`s only Selander ahead of Davis, which is not how the Australian imagined his sprint train.
Arashiro in the perfect position just behind him. Haussler, Teruel, Docker, Gavazzi, Kreder, Feillu, Kump, Bole, Hutarovych and Borrajo are all in a nice position just behind which should lead to a very close final.
Riders that are missing in the front rows are Sutton, Peeters, Van Loocke or Cooke.
Selander did a great job waiting until 1,4km before he really sprinted. This was too long for Haussler as he leaves Arashiro`s wheel starting the sprint early.
But what an acceleration this was. 400m later he already has a nice gap with the two Aussies Davis and Docker coming next.
Who could beat the German today? Docker is on his way to 2nd ahead of Davis, Kreder and Gavazzi.
Excellent win number 2 for Haussler. Sram wasn`t working at all today and even without a sprint train he proved to be the strongest sprinter in Down Under.
Docker proves to be in form with his 2nd after an disappointing last stage while Davis as 3rd is behind his expectations.
Kreder finishes on a good 4th ahead of the Pivovarna duo Kump and Bole. Arashiro, Gavazzi, Feillu and a surprising strong Costa complete the top10.
While Gavazzi defends the overall lead even without bonus seconds Haussler extends his point jersey lead and now has a nice gap to Davis in 2nd.
