ZLM Tour - Stage 1
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_001_zpsedf61cf4.jpg

The tour kicks off with two flat stages, with this opener being less tricky than the second day: anyway, there's a short climb 25km to the finish, which may some pure sprinters' legs.

And there's crosswinds today (45kmh)... Top-favorites should be Van Stayen, Greipel, Haussler and Holloway.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_002_zps8da765a9.jpg

The first breakaway attempts (too many to count them all) were all empty-handed and it took almost 50km to finally see one single rider being allowed to go for the break of the day: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Fritsch, who therefore takes out the two intermediate sprints (actually sprinting.. which is kinda funny.. sort of):

Sprint #1 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Fritsch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Richeze i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Greipel
Sprint #2 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Fritsch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Greipel i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Richeze

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_003_zps79332bcc.jpg

Fritsch would also take out today's only KoM-sprint for the polka dot tomorrow... his gap though is down to 1'25" with now 24km remaining.. the wind is still blowing, by the way.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_004_zpsc10183bc.jpg

10km before finish, his solo-effort is over, as the peloton finally catches up.. the crosswinds already do have some influence as well, as we notice two major splits back in the peloton (with 74 riders remaining in the leading bunch)!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_005_zpsea5f1254.jpg

Most notable names being dropped (with no chance to fight back today): i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Breschel, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Vastaranta, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Weening as well as some sprinters like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Peeters or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Chicchi..

..horrible news for Vastaranta and Weening in particular, as those two definitely aimed for the GC here!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_006_zps6085d65c.jpg

The peloton is now preparing the bunch sprint, so let's have a look at who's likely to be in the mix for today's line honours:

The three trains from Heineken, Privatbank and La Vie do lead their captains still at the front, now entering the final km:

Van Stayen went from left to right, catching Haussler's wheel.. Gavazzi now behind Vaitkus, who did his work for Greipel.. Holloway, Grillo and also Ventoso still within striking distance!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_008_zps176f0860.jpg

Van Stayen slipped through past Haussler to kick off his finishing sprint.. Vaitkus with a second acceleration to catch up to La Vie's duo Sonnery/Haussler and Holloway now goes on the left side.. Grillo finally at Greipel's wheel!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_009_zps8848fbeb.jpg

Van Stayen though opens up a decent gap quickly.. while Haussler, a now kicking Greipel and Holloway may just fight for the runner-up here..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_ZLM/14ZLM_1_010_zpse1ee3265.jpg

Yap, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Stayen dominates the opener and wins this bunch sprint in style! A few metres behind, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Greipel and a strong finishing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Ventoso did eventually complete the podium ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Holloway and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Haussler, who struggled on that final metres!

The dropped bunch would eventually lose 4 minutes today and also solo-escapee i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Fritsch couldn't hang on in this fast finish. At least he will wear the polka dot for one day.

So Van Stayen with the race-lead, just 2" on Greipel, who grabbed some bonifications during the stage. Ventoso 3rd ahead of Richeze, who wasn't a factor in the bunch sprint.. tomorrow's flat stage looks more challenging, but guys like Van Stayen, Ventoso or Gavazzi already proved their strengths in this less tricky opener.

Final Results Stage 1/

Had some problems with the exported results (well, they do not exist, actually).. thanks to roturn for helping me out recreating the Top-25 for this stage! I did also show those riders, who lost minutes in those splits..
