Tour of Eritrea - Stage 5
ember

The final stage of the first ever Tour of Eritrea will see the riders handle the race’s longest stage. A local circuit of about 14 kilometers will be raced ten times to conclude this year’s race.

The stage is ranked flat, which should mean no problems for race leader

However, the lap contains a steep hill. It’s only a couple of hundred meters long, but it could be enough to put some of the fastest men into trouble. Nevertheless, stage favourites are

Just like the four other days here in Eritrea, the sun shines and provides beautiful conditions for a road race.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0084_zps3de37738.png

The first mountain sprint comes only a few kilometers after the start, and seven riders have attacked the peloton and gained a gap. It’s mountain goat

leading them over. The others are

They have a gap of 40 seconds back to the peloton.

taking the six sprint points.

The second mountain sprint comes 92 kilometers away from home, and it’s

outsprinting
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Soler
for the five points on offer. Also note how steep the climb actually is! It averages 12.7 percent for 800 meters, with sections being 15 percent steep!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Meintjes
rolls through the second intermediate sprint first with 59 kilometers left. The gap back to the peloton is 3’45.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Soler
wins the third categorized climb on today’s route. It could be a hard task for the peloton to catch these 11 escapees. With 51 kilometers left their lead is 3’15, and there are several strong puncheurs and climbers here, meaning they will hardly lose any time on the climb.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0090_zps99249f5b.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Hochmann
is the first sprinter to prove this one isn’t for those who can’t handle hills. He’s dropped on the fifth and fourth last time climbing the hill, and third climbing he’s dropped for good. The same goes for
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Di Nucci
who is together with Hochmann now, being 3’20 behind the peloton with 26 kilometers left.

laying down a fast pace to tire the sprinters not comfortable with this kind of terrain. He’s chasing 1’25 behind the breakaway with 24 kilometers left to race.

Also, Betancur’s pace forces

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Soler
wins the final mountain sprint with 11 kilometers left. Though, it’s looking tough to stay away, as the peloton comes only 29 seconds behind!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0093_zpsfa6dc38c.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Gil
doesn’t give up that easy tough! He fires away from the others with 8.500 meters left, and he suddenly finds himself 50 seconds ahead of the peloton!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0094_zps31adb646.png

Behind the Spaniard it’s

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Krizek
trying to close the gap with 5.5 kilometers to go. Krizek joined the fun over the top of the final climb. And guess what, they’re no less than 40 seconds ahead of the peloton!

Though, they’re also 30 seconds behind
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Gil!

realize this could be an opportunity for unexpected stage glory, and launch an attack! They immediately get a nice gap of 22 seconds back to the peloton, where all the sprinter’s teams are waiting for their own sprinter to position them well.

with the peloton being a massive 38 seconds behind the latest mentioned duo! It looks like the hill was too much for the sprinters indeed.

realize he must launch his sprint if he’s going to have any chance catching

looks behind and sees no one! What a ride by the veteran in his beautiful jersey!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0099_zps04327842.png

A brilliant win!
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Gil
wins the final stage in the Tour of Eritrea after a superb breakaway ride.

takes second ahead of
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Pakthusov

That will be some nice and unexpected ranking points for both teams on the final day of racing.

lead home the peloton 50 seconds behind the stage winner. They were simply not good enough. Though, it shows how tough the hill was when you only count 80 riders in the bunch as they cross the line.

And as it doesn't really matter, the time keepers give the peloton the same time as the stage winner.

writes history being the first rider to win Tour of Eritrea!
