Vuelta al Tachira - Stage 4
SportingNonsense
Enough of the sprint stages, time for a proper mountain stage! Not the toughest climb of the tour, but it is the first!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-1.png

But while the focus is on later on, there were so many initial attacks. Starting with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Garbelli at the start of the race, continuing for the next 40km at least. Every time the peloton seemed happy to let a group go, a couple more riders looked to attack across - and the gap got going again.

40km in, we have this group of 15:
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-2.png

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Garbelli, Traficante, Kwiatkowski
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Martins, Viviani
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Vantornout, Locatelli
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Monsalve, Pantano Gomez
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Jeannesson
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Raisin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Txurruka
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Pozzo, Girardi
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Parra Bustamente

They are being chased however, and they can blame Viviani and Pantano Gomez for that. As 13 they were building a gap, as 15, the peloton is angry.

And so they are caught. 5 new attackers then. Cadel Evans, Chris Anker Sorensen, Edwin Parra Bustamente, David Garbelli and Roberto Traficante
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-3.png

Garbelli takes the intermediate sprint from Sorensen and Parra B.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-4.png

The first KoM of the race comes at 35km to go. Sorensen edges out Evans and Parra B.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-5.png

Attacks coming from the Pirelli/Aker led peloton behind, Schwab, Martinez, Cattaneo, Brandt, Maisto
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-6.png

22.5km to go. Sorensen takes the last intermediate sprint.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-7.png

Gaps are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Evans, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Sorensen, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Garbelli, Traficante and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Parra Bustamente
+ 1'08 i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Schwab
+ 1'56 i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Lloret, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Carrara, Cattaneo, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Brandt, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Alarcon, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Ochoa Quintero, Martinez and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Maisto
+ 2'12 i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Peloton

Thats right, Lloret, Carrara, Alarcon and Ochoa Quintero have already began attacking! Carrara soon bridges up to Schwab, with Alarcon, Brandt and Maisto chasing. Pirelli lead the charge behind, and soon it is only Carrara of the attackers clear, and he links up with his 2 Vespa teammate, who have been dropped by the break as Evans, Parra Bustamente and Sorensen attacked away - we are at the start of the climb!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-8.png

The Vespa trio are caught though, only for Carrara to attack again!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-9.png

He catches the break of 3, but with 10km to go, they are all caught. 10km for the GC guys to really battle it out then! A stage win awaits.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-10.png

Lloret and Colorado lead attacks, reducing the group down to 12
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-11.png

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Alarcon, Jaramillo
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Colorado, Rodas
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Niemiec
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Carrara, Cattaneo
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Eastman
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Ochoa Quintero
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Castano
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Lloret
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Nazaret

As we reach the flatter section before the 2nd steep part, Alarcon looks to press on and past Castano, Eastman, Lloret, Nazaret and Niemiec who are also getting a gap
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-12.png

But a lack of urgency sees us back to 14 with 5km to go. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Ratiy and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Paulinho having fought back into contention.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-13.png

Another group of 12 are not too far behind either, as Eastman attacks!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-14.png

Alarcon on the counterattack! Nazaret battling for his wheel.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-15.png

And his skills in the mountains really show there, Alarcon had ridden away and into a solo lead
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-16.png

Eastman, Nazaret, Ratiy and Castano are doing their best to chase, as Carrara clings on.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-17.png

You cant afford to give this man a gap. Plenty of time for Alarcon to celebrate
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-18.png

An easy victory as far as he is concerned, it seems! 3 in a row for Aker, the new team taking the season by storm.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-19.png

Nazaret beats Eastman and Castano for 2nd. Ratiy and Carrara tailed off at the finish.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-20.png

Rodas then comes in solo for 7th, ahead of a group with Paulinho, last years winner Ochoa Quintero, Lloret, Niemiec and Colorado.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras4-21.png

Sabatini is a long way down, there was never any doubt the lead would change, and with a 37 second gap to 2nd, Alarcon does enough to take it over.
