Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt - Stage 4
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_1.jpg
With the Grossglockner the 2nd and more or less last real mountain stage will be ridden today. After 130 pretty flat kilomters the riders will start the 17km climb with some steeper and some easier sections.
In general the climb is not as hard than the Kitzbüheler Horn on the 2nd day, but still should bring some nice gaps.

A lot of riders wanted in todays break. Finally a D2 rider seems to be in there.
But the peloton is still not happy with the group and so they chase a lot and bring the group back.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_2.jpg

In the end these 8 riders successfully form the group. Special focus on D2`s mountain goat Laverde Velez, who might have concentrated on this stage.

D2: Laverde Velez
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Veilleux
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Vesely
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Santaromita
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Quintana
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_4.jpg

Aker with most of their riders are doing the pace. It`s still not very high and so the group can get a nice gap.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_6.jpg

With 70km to go 5 more attacks. These are already far better climbers.
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Agnoli
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png De La Fuente
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Kern
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Parra Bustamante
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Osella
They still have 4min to cross to reach the breakaway.
De La Fuente as 16. is 7'44 behind race leader Alarcon as best placed. So still nothing where he needs to worry that much.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_7.jpg

Brenes, Quintana and Belkov take the points at the KoM. Behind you can already see the new attackers.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_10.jpg

Next to Aker you can also see Proximus for Valverde and Vespa for Pozzovivo now.
Together they can melt the advance.
With 30km to go the breakaway is still 1min ahead of the De La Fuente group. The peloton is another 2min behind.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_11.jpg

They start the climb and soon the 5 will join them as they are directly behind now.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_13.jpg

Team Attack???
Aker is really doing amazing on the climb pushing forward and pulling race leader Alarcon with them.
Just a very few riders are able to stay with them. But the names are kind of surprising.
D2`s Melero, Saab`s Lövkvist and WWE`s Diniz. First two lost lots of time earlier in the race but had the best position today.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_15.jpg

Brenes again takes the maximum points ahead of Laverde Velez and Quintana.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_18.jpg

Diniz and Lövkvist probably see their good chance today and attack with 17km to go. In front you can already see the breakaway with Vesely being the first rider to be caught.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_19.jpg

Melero still keeps contact to the Aker train. Horrible scenario for the favourites behind.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_21.jpg

But mainly due to Vespa`s and Proximus` work the Aker train is back in the peloton, which is down to 70.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_23.jpg

With 15km to go also Lövkvist and Diniz are back in the peloton. So just a few former breakaway riders with Laverde Velez, Belkov and Santaromita are 1min ahead.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_25.jpg

Again Aker with an attack. This time with their leader Alarcon himself. Only Ratiy is able to follow him.
17s later Van Den Broeck and Caruso are coming still ahead of the rest.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_26.jpg

Both of them make the contact to the Alarcon group, where Brenes is working for Ratiy now.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_28.jpg

Van Den Broeck and Alarcon attack. The last 3 of the breakaway are already visible.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_29.jpg

Everything is back together. The peloton led by Vespa and Proximus caught all riders but Alarcon, who is still a bit ahead. Van Den Broeck, Caruso and Ratiy on the other side are in the pack again.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_31.jpg

On one of the short descents Van Den Broeck is attacking again. He surely is one of the strongest here but lost some time due to an unlucky puncture.
The Belgium is 30s behind Alarcon and 39s ahead of a 9 rider group including Lövkvist, Caruso, Pozzovivo, Rujano, Valverde, Ratiy and Kolesnikov.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_33.jpg

Time to attack for these favourites, who see Alarcon riding to the overall win and Van Den Broeck to become very dangerous again.
Just 7km to go.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_35.jpg

Valverde and Pozzovivo prove to be the strongest of these and are not far behind Van Den Broeck, who is still looking strong.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_37.jpg

Not as strong as Alarcon on the other hand. He has a solid gap already and will surely getting the stage win. But is the gap big enough for the time trial?
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_38.jpg

A deserved victory for maybe the best climber in cycling. Well done by him and his team today.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_42.jpg

He really gained a lot of time on the last 3km. Van Den Broeck sprints over the line 1'18 later.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_43.jpg

1'56 even for Valverde. 2'05 Pozzovivo, who was joined by Caruso and Rujano on the final meters. So also Van Den Broeck made a jump today.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_44.jpg

Duarte, Kolesnikov, Ratiy, Lövkist and Krasnoperov even lose another minute. The gaps really becoming bigger now. De La Fuente the Bianchi man after his attack.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_45.jpg

His team mates haven`t been very lucky today. Lloret and Schwab cross the line more than 4min behind Alarcon.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_46.jpg

More riders, who lost a lot of time today are the WWE, Rothaus and CSC leaders, who finish together with lots of luxury team mates of the big man.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_4_47.jpg
D2: After his nice attack Laverde Velez lost some time in the end finishing as 33rd, while Melero suffered even more in the end after hanging on the Aker train as 42nd of the day. At least they cäme much closer the the 2nd last team in the team ranking today. Just 1min between them and Team Rothaus after this stage.

Quite surprising that no rider finished out of the time limit. Even an obviously injured Guillen was accepted by the jury with +34min.
