Vuelta al Tachira - Stage 5
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_001_zps6ad43e29.png

The last of four flat stages in Tachira and it's also the most challenging: another short one, the profile features a categorized climb halfway through the race, as well as some more difficulties.

It should be the sprinter's turn anyway. Jaguar's Sam Bennett dominated the last two bunch sprints and should be considered the top-favorite, but the competition remains close.

A group of 5 riders manages to establish a minutes-gap 25km into race, so it took a while to build a first working breakaway:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Bajadali, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Valencia, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Abreu, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Meintjes and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Robov!

Some "new" names, as well as the first sign of Wounded Warriors after a quiet race so far.. Meintjes as the best-placed in GC (52nd, + 3.36), as he finished within the first peloton in yesterday's hilly stage.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_003_zps8099e79d.jpg

The South African is also the one to take today's only mountain-sprint 62km before finish.. the lead is up to 3'00" in the meantime, but there's still a way to go.

Only a few kilometres later, the peloton starts to chase - business as usual. Privatbank, Bacardi, as well as Jaguar and Mobil show their colors at the front of the bunch. It's the sprinter-teams, obviously!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_005_zpscfd62459.jpg

The escapees reach the last of two intermediate sprints - 12km before finish - as first though. But the bunch is already within sight, keeping up a high pace.. the (uncontested) intermediate sprints went as follows:

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/points_zps63f449ab.png Sprint #1i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Robovi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Bajadalii439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Valencia
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/points_zps63f449ab.png Sprint #2i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Abreui439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Robovi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Meintjes

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_006_zpsd7ddfad1.jpg

The much bigger news happens 3km later though: there's a huge split in the chasing peloton! The brutal pace by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Mobil, plus some notable crosswinds (25kmh), lead to some unexpected drama here:

only 48 riders manage to keep Mobil's pace, which still didn't reel in the escaping group though.. None of the very top-favorite involved yet, but there's a clear gap for more than 80 riders!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_007_zpsee85b9b1.jpg

Most notable name might be i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ndbri, who still fights to not lose contact 8km before finish.. the pure climber won't be the team's GC-hope anyway, but still..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_008_zps266df840.jpg

A chaotic situation like this sometimes favors the breakaway group and yes, the gap is getting bigger again:

4km to go and the bunch is a minute in arrears now! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Robov may sense a witness in both his companions and the bunch, going for a late solo-attempt now!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_009_zpsd4ab95aa.jpg

He won't go unchallenged though: 2km to go and especially i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Bajadali desperately tries to hang on the Robov, being just 9" behind.

The other three escapees are 21" in arrears, while the peloton still struggles to get the pursuit back on full-mode - the gap is at 1'25" and maybe already to big to go for a bunch sprint..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_010_zps91f56cd8.jpg

Robov enters the final kilometre with almost the same advantage on solo-chasing Bajadali as a few minutes before.. the peloton narrows the gap, but hasn't reached the finishing stretch yet..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_011_zps9f452791.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Robov fights til the end and takes out this fifth stage of the Vuelta al Tachira! His teams keeps showing it's colors in breakaways and now benefits in style. A nice win and a huge effort by the Bulgarian..

..the fight for 2nd place will be close though, as the peloton bridged the gap quickly, once the sprint kicked off.. too late for the victory..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_012_zps597e4d24.jpg

..and also too late to catch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Bajadali, who lungs in for a nice 2nd place today! That's a nice way to show the team's colors for the first time!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Rangel completes the podium, overtaking escapee i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Abreu.. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Vanoverschelde completes the Top-5 ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Eisel.. but the more interesting question is, where those dropped riders end up..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_5_013_zps908e20c7.jpg

They end up with the same time as Robov and the peloton! Thanks to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Reinhardt and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Angarita sprinting to close the gap, the dropped group of 70 riders won't lose any unexpected time today. So only a few earlier dropped riders do so.

So i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Maillet remains the GC-leader with the race now going into the crucial second half and four consecutive mountain-stages! Stay tuned!
