To open the 3 day stage race is an easy sprinter’s stage. It shouldn’t cause any problems and should lead to a bunch sprint. There’s a 3rd category climb during the stage that will decide the king of mountain jersey wearer for 2 days, as next stage will be the prologue.
Corsica International 2013 begins in a perfect weather. We should have a great spectacle today!
On a picturesque route we have our first attackers of the race. It’s an Irish rider Adam Petrie-Armstrong and an Algerian Youcef Reguigui
And as we are racing nearby the beautiful sea two other attackers join the original duo. They form the break of the day. With winds over 40 km/h this might be a tougher stage than we expected at first.
Sergiy Lagkuti
Anders Lund
Youcef Reguigui
Adam Petrie-Armstrong
As we come to the 3rd category “climb” the expected attacks begin from just outside final kilometer. Youcef Reguigui is the first brave rider to initiate all the mayhem about to come. He’s followed by Anders Lund. The duo has small gap to the other two riders.
Sergiy Lagkuti comes with highest speed at the end, but his attack comes marginally too late and it’s Anders Lund who smartly followed Reguigui first move that wins the climb and with it the jersey. Lagkuti has to be satisfied with second only, while Reguigui manages to grab 3rd.
In the peleton it’s Team CSC-Orbea & Bouygues Telecom that share most work at the front during the stage so far. The two teams are protecting their GC leaders very well so far, Abal and Taaramäe respectively. Less than 40km to go and the gap is going down gradually, now at just less than 3 minutes.
16km to go and the break is in sight and the catch is imminent! Bouygues Telecom was the main team to chase today and they did their job spot on. In the front we can see PFG-Armavia bringing support for Lo Cicero, as well as Prio – Porto who’ll be looking forward to challenge Lo Cicero, Avelino and Caldeira looking like a deadly combo.
Adam Petrie-Armstrong is the strongest rider from the break, as others are swept he’s still trying all he can. It’s not going end in a win for him, but his efforts should be applauded. Prio – Porto & PFG-Armavia are now in control of the pack at the front.
We are almost under 5km banner and everything is together finally. PFG-Armavia is leading the way with Chun Kai Feng & Yousef Mirza Banihammad powering on the front. Behind them is Ralf Matzka. However there is no sight of Lo Cicero, can he make it back to his train in time for the sprint?
We can also see the 4 rider strong Prio – Porto forming with André Vital in front, followed by Plaza, Caldeira and Avelino.
Popov, Jan Hopman Vesely and the big GC favourite, Timofey Kritskiy can also be seen near the front at the moment.
3.3km to go and in the front it’s Prio – Porto taking control. Meanwhile the fight for to places unfolds on the front, we can finally see Lo Cicero behind the Tinkoff rider. It’s unlikely the Italian rider can make it to the front row now in time. Armavia will have to rely on Matzka for today.
Another big rider missing from the front completely is the Danilo Kupfernagel who is seen somewhere further down in the peleton. It looks it will not be the start of the race Amex has envisioned today.
2km and it’s Ruben Plaza storming ahead with Samuel Caldeira on his wheel, followed by Óscar Avelino. It looks like they will produce perfect leadout today, however can Avelino use it wisely to win the stage?
Following Avelino’s wheel in single file is Popov, followed by, Vesely, Hopman, Klimov, Matzka and Kritskiy.
Flamme Rouge!
Samuel Caldeira begins his sprint under 1km, leading Avelino to perfection! However Avelino doesn’t accelerate and instant gap is created between the peleton and Caldeira due to Avelino not following and slowing down the peleton a little. It’s a very strange move by Prio Porto, is it actually going to work?
500 metres and Caldeira is out of energy. He can’t stand on his pedals – but he has quite sizable gap! The front pack is back in action. Avelino however is still not sprinting, if this plan doesn’t work out the team manager will have some words with him. Ralf Matzka is leading in the middle! On the right of the screen we can see Evgeni Popov trying to catch up to Matzka.
If Caldeira is to be caught, he’ll be caught by one of those 2 probably, but the big question is if?
But he isn’t as Samuel Caldeira takes fairly strange win on stage 1 of Corsica International! I am not sure if we should call this bit of tactical genius by the team or dirty play? However one thing is clear and that Prio Porto has worked this out to perfection and have a great day to enjoy. With Plaza on 7th, they have a strong contender for next 2 stages too.
In the background we can see Matzka fading and Timofey Kritskiy making late charge for podium here, the Russian might possibly take few surprising bonus seconds here.
Evgeni Popov takes another bit surprising 2nd with even more surprising name on 3rd, Timofey Kritskiy. Those bonus seconds he gained here might prove vital later in the race. Daniel Vesely grabs 4th with Matzka on 5th.
Armavia saved their day a bit with this 5th place however Lo Cicero failed again, on 14th. Danilo Kupfernagel on 33th shouldn't be proud either. All the GC contenders made it safely through the day.
