Tour d'Andorra - Stage 3
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_001_zpscb4fb1f5.jpg

Yet another tough mountain stage with two long and challenging climbs late into the stage.

Yesterday's impressive solo-winner Marquez may expect his strongest rivals to attack here, but of course he showed some great shape so far. Will he do it again?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_002_zpsd83c7522.jpg

Three riders went clear early: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png De la Fuente, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Peterson and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Seeldraeyers feature the break of the day.. Peterson (4 pts) as the only one who scored points towards the mountain competition and also as the only to one to really challenge for the first two KoM-sprints, adding 26 point to his bucket:

Provisional KoM-competition i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Peterson (30) i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Serry (29) i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Slagter (27)

With two climbs still to follow, this ain't over for today though..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_003_zpsf2b35038.jpg

The escaping group would enter the final 40km (now facing the penultimate climb) with a 3'00"-lead on the peloton, where several riders now try to go clear as well:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Jaramillo was followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Vinhas, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Augustyn and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets! Popovych as the best-placed of those (25th, + 6.32) definitely wants to show something - and just like Karpets, he has to!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_004_zps3a583b9e.jpg

But it wouldn't be the last notable moves on this climb, as also the top-favorites put some early pressure on race-leader Marquez:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Pozzovivo was the first to show some strengths, immediately followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Intxausti though! And of course i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic, who even tries to go solo now 4km to the mountain-top!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_005_zps6a0edcea.jpg

This climb made quite a selection and as Brajkovic overtakes the last remaining escapee De la Fuente, we may take a look at the situation 26km before finish (now entering the final descend)..

42 riders
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Topchanyuk/Efimkin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Lövkvist
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Marzano
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Cobo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Maillet
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Augustyn
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Jeannesson

So the first attackers around Popovych couldn't really open up a gap, with a few of them fighting their way alongside the top-favorites now.. Brajkovic also took out the KoM-sprint, so he may well take the polka dot, if he holds on to this gap..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_006_zps5b782e16.jpg

..but it won't happen, at least for now: the chasing groups, as well as Brajkovic, would all be pulled back by the peloton on this long descend! 17km remaining and a small group with Pozzo/Brajkovic/Marquez is soon to be reeled in, as they refuse to work together..

..so 49 riders in the bunch, now facing the 14km finishing climb!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_007_zpsa398e8cb.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych gave it another empty-handed try a few moments later, but 9km to the finish, it's the next attempts of the more serious GC-contenders:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Duarte (GC's 7th) went first, immediately followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Pozzovivo!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_008_zps797066cf.jpg

And it's Abal, who managed to drop this attacking group going for a solo-effort 7km to the line!

32" behind it's Pozzovivo, who actually dropped Marquez, now joined by Brajkovic and Pedraza!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_009_zps8670001d.jpg

As Abal looks as strong as Marquez looked yesterday and the chasing groups taking shape, it's time to look at the overall situation 4km before finish:

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_010_zps7677c1c2.jpg

2km for Abal and group Marquez is already 1'57" in arrears! So Marquez is likely to lose his yellow to Abal and he may even fear the trio in between, which is 45" ahead of him at this point..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_011_zps1be42502.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal was too strong for them all today! Sitting on 5th in GC prior to this day (+ 1.38), he obviously will improve.. will Marquez limit the losses?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_012_zps256689a1.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic comes in 2nd with + 1'10" (plus taking the KoM-lead), gaining some seconds on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Pozzovivo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pedraza at 1'25".. with a clear gap on the further group(s), they will gain back seconds on Marquez..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_3_013_zps44a4847d.jpg

+ 2'03" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Duarte, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Intxausti and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Kiserlovski.. which shows, how strong Abal did climb here. Yellow for sure..

+ 3'28" for GC's 10th i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Topchanyuk, who is likely to lose his spot to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Lövkvist, who finished at 2'18"..

So with tomorrow's mountain timetrial ahead, Abal claims a comfortable GC-lead: 45" on Marquez, 50" Brajkovic and 53" Pozzo...those four riders seem to be the most realistic remaining contenders for the win. That said, Pedraza did well today and may be in the mix, just like Intxausti (+ 1.43 though).

A clear gap for Duarte/Kiserlovski and a so far struggling Nazaret, while Lövkvist has yet to defend his Top-10 on riders like Marzano, Topchanyuk, Maillet or Panayotov... Popovych (24th) and Karpets (27th) did gain a spot, but were unlucky today. Still two stages to come.
