The Vuelta a Tachira continues with the so far toughest stage: the route is panflat until the final 50kms, where three categorized climbs await the peloton. Ain't the toughest climbs, but still a chance to create first gaps. The pure climbers may try to avoid any trouble here, so it could be an interesting stage.

Amongst the GC-favorites, Jaguar's Berhane or Repsol's Kashechkin look like the best bet today.. pure puncheurs like Kelderman (Puma) or Lloyd (Boeing) may try their luck for line honours. An open race.

Today's first breakaway attempt features three teams, which hadn't any success in the stage-decisions so far, including two CT-equipes:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Rubiano Chavez
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Masuda
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren

Masuda actually a quite dangerous rider for such an early breakaway, so not the worst move.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_003_zps7cfacf2b.jpg

Even though he may be the reason for the peloton taking control of race quite early. With still 88km to go, the bunch - led by Jaguar - keeps the gap under 3 minutes and actually already starts to chase..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_004_zpsaa8e9e46.jpg

As soon as the peloton enters the first climbs, we see the first serious attacks (53km before finish):

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Maillet
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Izagirre went first, followed by
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Briceno and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Heider

The four are just 30" behind the early escapees, who are soon to be caught, it seems!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_005_zps407c3c6c.jpg

Yes, the break of the day is swallowed by the bunch with still 48km remaining! The latest attackers also couldn't establish a notable gap yet, except of

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Maillet, who launches another move on today's first categorized climb!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_006_zpsfbe90e68.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Izagirre once again tries to join him, though already facing a 50"-gap with 44km to go!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Beccera and also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Heider jump behind Izagirre, trying to build a new chasing group..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_007_zpsbfbcbcd4.jpg

Heider was joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png De la Fuente a few moments later and the 4 riders establish a gap on the bunch quickly.. with Maillet still holding on to a nice gap though:

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/oz_polka_zps6e0c6147.gif KoM #1 (Cat4)i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Mailleti439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Beccerai439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Izagirre

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_008_zpse6c6684e.jpg

30km to go and with some dangerous riders on the attack (De la Fuente and Maillet in particular) the peloton now has to re-take control of the race:

E1/ Maillet

E2/ Izagirre, Beccera, De la Fuente, Heider at 1.16

P/ still 105 riders at 1.39

Heineken now shows it's colors for the first time in the race, same goes for Kenya and Barcelona!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_009_zps62fde2a8.jpg

Solo-leader Maillet also takes the full points on today's toughest climb..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_010_zps993a8dfd.jpg

With De la Fuente now chasing solo! The allrounder attacked the chasing group at the KoM-sprint (25km to go) and dropped his companions that way:

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/oz_polka_zps6e0c6147.gif KoM #2 (Cat2)i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Mailleti439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png De la Fuentei439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Heider

No matter where Maillet will finish today, he will be Tachira's first KoM-leader anyway! With now less than 20km remaining, the climber may even hope for more though..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_011_zps6941b728.jpg

The bunch (reduced to 70 riders in the meantime) really struggles to narrow the gap.. Team Kenya now sitting at the front, but there's no well working chase so far.. 15km before finish, the situation is as follows:

E1/ Maillet

E2/ De la Fuente at 0.43

E3/ Heider, Beccera, Izagirre at 1.25

P/ with 71 riders at 2.57

So that's actually a huge gap between Maillett and the group of GC-favorites!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_012_zps74cba21c.jpg

Less than 10km to go and it seems to be a fight between Maillet and De la Fuente now, as they also held on to their gap(s) at today's final climb:

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/oz_polka_zps6e0c6147.gif KoM #3 (Cat3)i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Mailleti439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png De la Fuentei439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Heider

Maillet still 47" ahead of solo-chaser De la Fuente and it's mostly going downhill from now.. ain't looking too bad for Maillet!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_013_zps17bbdbf2.jpg

The French climber is within sight for De la Fuente, but the gap remains at 44" with now less than 3km to go!

No more action in the groups behind: group Beccera/Izagirre/Heider is already 1'36" in arrears and the peloton (54 riders) another minute!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_014_zpseae2d141.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Maillet takes out this first tough stage in style! A long solo-effort for a dominating win, gaining valuable minutes on the bunch of GC-favorites! This is a tricky situation for all favorites: Maillet ain't the worst climber, so given his huge win today, he could well be a threat for the mountains as well!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_015_zpsa0e559e1.jpg

Same goes for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png De la Fuente, who finishes as 2nd with 58" in arrears though.. The Spaniard may be the worse climber than Maillet, but with also one hilly stage remaining, he can play his strength for a second time..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_016_zpsc170a15c.jpg

Completing today's Top-5 already 2'33" behind Maillet: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Heider, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Izagirre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Becerra! They couldn't hang on with De la Fuente, but at least managed to gain some time on the peloton..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_4_017_zpsa8cd0006.jpg

..which definitely failed to control the race here.. all the GC-favorites finish 3'16" behind Maillet.. yes, we still have four mountain stages ahead, but this is quite a "burden".

So, to keep it short for now: Maillet slips into yellow, as almost all sprinters (except of Bacardi's leadout Samokhvalov) lost at least 4 minutes today. But those sprinters will aim for at least a stage-win in tomorrow's last flat stage of the tour!
