Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt - Stage 3
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_001_zps38446f5c.jpg

The first flat stages comes at just 123km, but is a quite challenging one: a hilly first half is followed by less tough second, with a slightly ascending road close to the finish.

It's definitely a day, where the sprinters aim for line honours: Mezgec, Davis, Grillo and Aberasturi should be considered the favorites, as well as Polivoda or strong climbing Rangel.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_002_zps2955221d.jpg

But first, it's of course the break of the day, who's setting the agenda early into the day: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Besada, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Salinas and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Barbera went clear to establish a comfortable gap soon.

Salinas (+ 20.22) as the best-placed in GC, so those three may hope for the peloton to take things easy today..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_003_zps4ec97cbf.jpg

..which some teams obviously won't do though: Kazzinc, Karcher and Bacardi work well together to narrow the gap back to 2'20" with now 36km remaining.

Besada took out both KoM-sprints (for 16pts), but had no chance to attack mountain-leader Intxausti (28) today. Points are points, anyway.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_004_zps912bc8a6.jpg

It ain't looking as those three escapees would stand a chance against the bunch today: 7.5km before finish, the trio keeps fighting to hold off the nearing peloton, which is just 27" in arrears and pacing hard..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_005_zps8e510037.jpg

..to reel them in about 4km to the line. The sprinter-teams delivered so far and we already see a first small train taking the lead early into the soon to be kicked off bunch sprint:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Sousa
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Davis
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Mezgec

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_006_zps38826586.jpg

But they wouldn't be the only train, as also AMEX moved forward, as well as some more sprinters:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Sousai439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Selig
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Davisi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Keough
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturii439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Grillo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Mezgec
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Polivoda
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Giaux

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_007_zpsb23289f6.jpg

There's a clear gap behind those riders, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Arashiro joins this leading group close to the final km!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Rangel though missed those early trains and needs to close up.. while Keough/Grillo appear to be the strongest train with Davis now struggling to keep their pace!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_008_zps7d1c817c.jpg

He's still in the mix though, as also the riders at this wheel couldn't yet leave his slipstream! Grillo now kicks from a very good position, while Arashiro moves past Mezgec/Giaux/Polivoda..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_009_zpseec08b14.jpg

..but also struggling to go for a clear advantage: he's head-to-head with Aberasturi, Davis and Giaux now!

Grillo though opened up a clear gap quickly..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_3_010_zpsf39db9da.jpg

..to take the line honours easily: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Grillo takes this stage in style, completing a nice leadout by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Keough/Selig, who both end up in today's Top-10 as well!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi goes for 2nd in a tight sprint, beating i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Giaux, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Davis and Keough. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Arashiro couldn't keep his speed til the end, with also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Mezgec not showing his best sprint eventually.

No notable changes in the GC, so Intxausti keeps yellow with the field now facing the third mountain stage. It's the less challenging of all three here, so it might be questioned, if the GC-contenders will have chances/ambitions to try something tomorrow.
