Vuelta al Tachira - Stage 1
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_001_zps9c59bed8.png

First of three flat stages and it looks like a rather easy day: a panflat circuit through San Fernando (118km in total) definitely suits the pure sprinters.

Top-favorites should be Vanoverschelde, Bennett, Aberasturi, Rizza or Cucinotta. But there are some more sprinters like Sonnery or Brea, who could well hunt the victory here.

It doesn't take too long for a breakaway group of 4 riders being allowed to go clear:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Haig
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Yates
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Parra Bustamente
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Smit

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_003_zps645f0f88.jpg

The group establishes a gap up to four minutes halfway through the race, where the first of two intermediate sprints is easily won by Yates.. same goes for the second, by the way:

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/points_zps63f449ab.png Sprint #1i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Yatesi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Haigi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Smit
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/points_zps63f449ab.png Sprint #2i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Yatesi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Haigi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Smit

That ain't exactly surprising, as Yates is the strongest sprinter in this escaping group..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_004_zpse5f67395.jpg

60km before finish, the peloton starts to chase though: Mobil, Bacardi and also Privatbank lead the bunch into the second half of the race.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_005_zps2922210d.jpg

And that ain't the best moment for a puncture! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bennett has a flat with 59km remaining! One of today's favorite sprinters with some bad luck.. will he manage to fight his way back?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_006_zps86ae7e60.jpg

He does! With a little help by two friends, the Irish sprinter easily catches up to the peloton a few kilometres after his puncture. Anyway, the question remains, wether he lost too much energy or not..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_007_zps6b92e29e.jpg

Like already said, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Yates would also take out the second sprint 23km before finish. And he's also going for a late solo-attempt right after this sprint!

The bunch is just 1'10" in arrears though, he's definitely going to face a tough competition.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_008_zpsa9983829.jpg

Bennett obviously feels still good, as Jaguar joined Bacardi and Privatbank to lead the pursuit! With 18km left, the gap is down to 45", but all four escapees are still fighting to hold on to this lead..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_009_zps92369901.jpg

But it ain't a day for a succesfull breakaway attempt: 11km before finish, Yates is soon to be caught by the hard chasing peloton. He fought hard, just like his former breakaway companions, but this is going to be a bunch sprint today..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_010_zps8becda89.jpg

And it's still the same teams showing their colors at the front: Bacardi, Jaguar and local team Mobil-Aeropostal!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_011_zps4b51f0d8.jpg

3km to go and one train suddenly managed to open up a gap on the bunch! Bacardi keeps pulling the strings hard and one other team/rider sits behind, enjoying a comfortable position:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Grabovski
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Samokhvalov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Anton Martin

The latter with a nice position behind one of today's top-favorites, who obviously has the most powerful train!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_012_zps7635b316.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Mobil's train desperately tries to narrow this clear gap now, working for their sprint-hope here:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Rizza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Sonnery
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Brea
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Rangel

are those next promising guys sitting behind Mobil's train.. will they close the gap? 2km to go..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_013_zps11a8799e.jpg

1.2km remaining and it ain't looking too good for the sprinters behind.. there's still a 14"-gap between group Bacardi and the bunch!

Samokhvalov is now kicking off his final leadout for Aberasturi, who's still Anton Martin at his wheel!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_014_zpscc94a251.jpg

Still too far behind, the situation at the front of the peloton has changed with now 1km remaining:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Rizza seems to suffer from his team's effort..

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bennett and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Cucinotta move forward from the right side now!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_015_zps61e89f12.jpg

The win will be decided between i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Anton Martin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi though! And the latter is overtaken by the Martin close before the line!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_1_016_zpsb67e355a.jpg

He takes it! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Anton Martin opens the Vuelta a Tachira with a bang, beating i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi for a surprising win! He definitely was smart enough to find the right wheel (with some luck that this train "dropped" the bunch) and played his better position perfectly.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Samokhvalov manages to sprint for 3rd ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bennett and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Cucinotta! All those bigger names behind may try to fight back in tomorrow's flat stage, which will see CSC's Anton Martin as the first Tachira-leader in 2014!
