After 3 mountain stages the riders are probably happy to see less climbing today. Still the race officials are not that nice and so we have 2 consecutive hilly stages, which aren`t very easy as well. That said todays stage is probably the easier of those.
First KoM of the day and Sousa takes it ahead of Oliveira, Voeckler, Lewis and Mangel. It looks like a breakaway attempt but nothing decided yet as the peloton is not allowing them yet.
But after a few more attacks we finally have the breakaway and it is the biggest in this race so far with 8 riders. Not too surprising as those hilly stages after the mountains often tend to favour the breakaways.
Oliveira
Voeckler
Pirazzi
Baez
Zaballa
Mangel
Lewis
Sousa
Last mentioned by far the most dangerous as is 15th in the GC at the moment 12'15 behind race leader Kashechkin. But as the first two already have quite a gap he is not far from the riders behind in the top5-10.
Going up the next climb it`s the former U25 leader Kebede doing the pace for Kashechkin. But the gap at the moment is pretty consistently at 8'30.
Meanwhile his teammate Roberto Ferrari has abandoned the race and is the next sprinter, who is out of the race.
As 7. with 24 points Sousa already collected a bit and today he is the only rider going for the points.
So he also takes the 2nd KoM ahead of Voeckler and Lewis. The gap is up to 10'30 now.
Even though the pace in the peloton can`t be too high as the gap is going up, we see a huge split leaving 91 riders in the first group.
Only mentionable rider behind is Txurruka, 20th in the GC.
Yesterday he was the 2nd strongest of his team and showed a great performance. Today he is taking a day off it seems.
Sousa, Lewis, Oliveira the order on the highest point today.
And again Sousa, ho can make a huge step in the KoM ranking. Also in the GC he ill most likely make a huge step. With 65km to go the gap is up to 13'30. This actually means, that he is in the provisional leader jersey.
Repsol with 3 riders now but the gap is still not really melting. The peloton on the other hand is. Down to 70 riders.
This only shows that the breakaway is working well together.
No surprise that Sousa also takes this KoM. After some calculating he is up to 82 points. Exactly the same as actual KoM leader Devine. And the officials will reard him with the KoM jersey tomorrow. Or only if the peloton accelerates soon. Otherwise they might also give him the leader jersey.
Hollister has highered the pace now. Finally.
This splits the peloton to 44 riders. Surprisingly Zaini is one of the riders dropped. Actually you expected him to be one of todays favourites.
The last hill also reduced teh breakaway to 6 as Baez an Mangel can`t follow.
Also Pirazzi was dropped a bit but could come back.
Sousa is leading out keeping a high pace as he sees a GC chance. Behind him Oliveira, Lewis, Pirazzi, Voeckler and Zaballa in this order.
The gap though is down to a bit more than 10min, which means, Sousa can`t attack the leader jersey but still a top5 is possible.
The sprint starts and Oliveira and Pirazzi are the first riders to struggle.
Zaballa also can`t follo and we have Lewis, Voeckler and Sousa on one line now.
But in the end Lewis was by far the strongest and wins with a good gap.
He exactly delivered what his manager has asked for. Well done! So important points in the fight against relegation.
Sousa still holds on to 2nd ahead of Voeckler. Strong ride by him and now we have to wait for the peloton.
Lowe ahead of Popov in the peloton. But more important the gap: 8'58. Huge gap. This will give Sousa the 3rd in the GC. 2'59 behind Kiserlovski. But also 2'11 ahead of Ardila.
Some teams definitely underestimated him as this gap first has to be reduced again.
Due to Voeckler being in the breakaway, Team WWE extends their lead in the team ranking. Good news for the team.
