The first stage of this race is also the easiest one. The 3rd category climb into Dolz near the end is the only thing that could potentially ruin this day for the sprinters, although it's unlikely that it'll shed any riders.
The very early first intermediate sprint leads to an interesting run out from the start, since Credexbank intend to give Clarke a slight headstart in the battle for the points jersey by letting him take some early points.
The high pace stretches out the peloton to a long line, but everyone manages to stay in contact for now.
In fact, Credexbank's plan doesn't quite work out like they expected, as Bazayev catches on to the plan quickly and jumps clear to take six points.
Clarke has to settle for 2nd, with Vasylyuk in 3rd.
With the next sprint located more than 70 km further into the stage, Credexbank now drop the pacemaking, which finally opens the road for attacks.
After plenty of tries, a trio of riders breaks clear on the lower slopes of the day's first categorised climb: Orozco, Serov and Gil.
The Bintang rider is the first to reach the top of the climb, but Spanish champion Gil ties him in the lead after taking the 2nd KoM a little later.
That leaves the 3rd and final climb towards the end of the day to decide which of the two will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow, as Serov is already out of the discussion after two third places.
It's of course not guaranteed that they'll make it all the way to the last climb however, since Clarke once again orders his team mates to ramp up the pace as the finish comes closer.
It doesn't take long before we've reached the climb, with the peloton less than a minutes behind the leaders.
Realising that his two companions are starting to fade a little after the long day, Gil makes a little push in the steepest section and goes clear.
All three hold off the peloton over the top, but Orozco and Serov are caught just afterwards.
Gil, on the other hand, tries to fight back against the sprinter teams and still holds a 30 second advantage while entering the final 10 km.
Kudos to the man from CSC-Orbea for trying, but his little escape finally comes to an end four kilometers later.
Having sat back while Credexbank did all the work, Bpost and ING now come to the front with respective trains inside the last 5 km.
Vandousselaere, Boeckmans and Drujon are followed by Zabel and Teruel, whereas Van Heerden, Machado and Korzh prefer the line of Van Winden, Di Nucci and Bazayev.
Bpost may be trying to pull a trick on the others however, as Drujon stays cool when Boeckmans launches the sprint at 1800m to go.
Before long, Machado reacts and passes Boeckmans under the kite. Credexbank have meanwhile finally gotten their leadout man Golas into position, but Clarke is missing.
A strong Machado fends of the challenge from the leadout men, but finally starts to lose speed inside the final 500m, allowing Bazayev to come past, with others coming up quickly from behind with him.
With a perfectly timed sprint, the champion of Kazakhstan takes the stage win!
Another national champion, Bole, takes 2nd place - beaten by a bikelength. Van Heerden is third a little further back.
But let's move attention to the other end of the peloton, where a gap has opened behind Verona. Several notable names are sitting on the wrong side!
Alarcon
Peraud
Lowe
They're in luck today, as Peraud's Oz team manages to get them close enough to prevent being given a new time. More caution will be needed tomorrow if they want to stay in contention for the overall victory.
