Today brings us another big day in the mountains with a category one and two HC climbs. First up we have the Col d’Aspin, then the Col du Tourmalet and finally we finish on the Col de Tentes. This day really is a mixture of the old and new that modern Tours are starting to become known for – the Col d’Aspin and the Col du Tourmalet were both first used in 1910 and have been regularly used since then but the Col de Tentes has not been used in the Tour de France before at all. And here are the stats of these three climbs:
Col d’Aspin – 12km @ 6.5%
Col du Tourmalet – 17.2km @ 7.3%
Col de Tentes – 30km @ 5%
But keep in mind that the Col de Tentes is actually much harder than that over the second half of the course.
The first attack of the day comes from Lars Petter Nordhaug (22 mountain points) and he is followed by three more riders:
Arnold Jeannesson (6 mountain points)
Mikhail Ignatiev (24 mountain points)
Brent Bookwalter (55 mountain points)
And no one else is interested so just like that we have our break of the day formed! It is particularly noteworthy that this is Bookwalter’s fourth break of the race so far.
Nothing of interest occurs until the break hit the Col d’Aspin, which snakes up ahead of them. From here it is only climbing and descending – no more easy rolling over flat land. The gap is out to 7’21” and it is Lotto working back in the peloton.
In marked contrast to B&O, Lotto have a great team of climbers so leading the peloton up the Col d’Aspin are Monfort, Moschella and Duenas.
Up front they get to the summit and no one is really interested in the 16 mountain points on offer, not even Bookwalter who is the best placed in that classification. Ignatiev rolls over ahead of Jeannesson and then Bookwalter.
And it looks like we are going to have a tough day on our hands as, with 1km to go to the summit of this first climb, three riders attack away from the peloton:
Igor Anton (+21’18”)
Daniel Navarro (+26’08”)
Rasmus Guldhammer (+18’51”)
Over the top the gaps are:
7’04”
1’16”
8’20”

--->
P (152)
As we hit the Tourmalet, however, the three chasers have actually lost ground on the break and are only 46” ahead of the peloton. Clearly they did not descend well. Nevertheless all three of them work well on the easier early slopes of this climb and start to open up their gap over the bunch once again. The crowds here on the Tourmalet are huge!
Back in the bunch Monfort, Lloret and Duenas start to thin out the bunch and it splits almost in half – only 88 riders are left in the first part of the bunch.
Up front Ignatiev rolls over the top first once again, taking the 20 points. Jeannesson and Nordhaug are the next two.
Perhaps seeing the success of the chase group two more riders attack out of the peloton. Nepomnyachsniy and Augustyn are those two. Abal then bridges up to them not long after.
Over the top of the Col d Tourmalet here are the gaps:
1’18”
4’53”
48”
6’59”

P (79)
Oddly Augustyn sits up and is brought in by the bunch. Abal and Nepomnyachsniy struggle to extend their gap without any more help. The Col de Tentes starts with 30km remaining and over this gentle initial slope the Lotto train increases the speed, with some help from Faiers. With 23km to go they catch Abal and Nepomnyachsniy.
Abal clearly wants to get away as he attacks again with 19km remaining. Pluchkin and Pedraza follow him.
Cobo manages to control this attack, however, and it doesn’t get anywhere.
But this clearly kicks things off and so it is now time for Brajkovic to launch an attack. Once more Abal follows.
In fact Brajkovic isn’t the only one from his team to attack as up front Jeannesson also kicks away from the break. This only drops Ignatiev. The break now has about 1 minute on the group of Guldhammer and another 2’40” on the peloton.
Sicard is the next one to attack and he bridges up to Brajkovic. Brajkovic attacks again when this happens, dropping Abal. Sicard follows the Slovenian.
But what’s this? 4 more riders attack p to these two. They are:
Faiers
Kohl
Pluchkin
And race leader Cunego!
This attack is controlled by Pedraza which is fortunate for Madrazo, who almost missed a key moment there.
Up front Jeannesson has finally succeeded in dropping the rest of the break and he still has about a minute on the group of Guldhammer which is trying to come up to him. This happens just before the 10km to go mark, which marks the start of the hardest part of the climb.
Pluchkin now launches yet another attack from the bunch and this time he is followed by Kangert. But Kangert can’t get a gap over the bunch – only Pluchkin can.
Pedraza now launches an attack of his own and he goes past Pluchkin. Duarte joins Pedraza. The bunch is well and truly into the harder part of the climb now and the remnants of the bunch is thinning out.
Finally, after a pursuit that seems to have lasted forever, the group of Guldhammer finally catches Jeannesson and are now at the head of the race. They only have 1’20” on the peloton now, though, which has caught Duarte and Pedraza. Perhaps realising this Anton attacks away and makes a solo bid for stage glory. There are only 6.7km to go.
The next attack comes from Velits, with Duarte unsuccessfully trying to follow him. Velits manages to bridge up to Guldhammer and Navarro. They are now 1’04” behind Anton with 5km to go.
But once again this can’t get away as Pluchkin drags them back into the bunch. The road hits 10% and, realising that this is a great chance to weed out the weakest names, Sicard launches another attack.
Schleck and Pluchkin attack now and they go past Sicard. Schleck was much more conservative with his energy today – will that pay off?
Showing the same determination to work which he has shown all race, Cunego gets on to the front to control this move. In addition to catching Schleck and Pluchkin it reduces the group to only 11 riders. They are:
Madrazo, Lopez Garcia
Cunego
Pluchkin
Schleck
Sicard
Brajkovic
Velits
Amador
Kohl
Intxausti
Time is running out to get a gap on this group and so with 2.3km to the summit Amador launches an attack. He is only 15” down on Anton, who is gradually losing ground.
Cunego follows the attack of Amador up to Anton. And they get a gap! Schleck, Madrazo and Intxausti split off from the rest of the group of favourites but they are still being gapped by Cunego.
Schleck and Madrazo work together and just before the kite they manage to bring in the group of Cunego. Intxausti has been dropped by these two but is still riding ahead of the other GC riders.
Almost as soon as his group is caught, Cunego opens up his final burst to the line.
A gap is opening up! Could this be the crucial moment where Cunego stamps his authority on the race?
Madrazo is the fastest of the riders behind him but Cunego still has a solid gap around the final bend.
Defending champion Damiano Cunego takes the stage win but will he be given a time gap?
Madrazo crosses the line in second... and a 14 second time gap is given! Combining that with the 8 extra bonus seconds means that Cunego now has a 27 second lead over the Spaniard on GC. Schleck beats Amador to the line for third place.
Intxausti is the next one across the line in fifth place, with Anton right behind him. They are 51” down on the stage winner today.
1’22” down on the stage winner is Pluchkin, who takes 7th. He has a 9” gap on the riders behind him – Velits, Brajkovic and Sicard.
So let’s have a look at the GC now. As mentioned Cunego now has a 27” lead over Madrazo. Schleck slightly increases his lead in the fight for third against Amador. Intxausti’s great ride today moves him into fifth place as Tenorio came through 2’45” down today. Pluchkin moves back into the top ten and there are several riders within a minute of him that he will hope to overhaul before the end of the race. In addition to extending his GC lead Cunego’s stage win today means that he takes over the points competition with Madrazo moving into second in that competition.
