Tour de France - Stage 3
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-1.jpg

After yesterday’s stage produced a tough sprint won by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniel Bennati many riders will be hoping for an easier finish. Certainly the run into Guerrande is much more flat than yesterday and the wind should not have as much of an effect. In fact today shouldn’t bring much excitement at all with only a single sprint point out on course to break up the monotony.

Regardless, people seem keen to get into the opening break and the following are trying to get away:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Maxime Bouet

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-2.jpg

Of these it is in fact the first four who manage to get away and form the break of the day. Their names again are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Maxime Bouet
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sep Vanmarcke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Julien Simon
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Dion Beukeboom

None of them were in the break yesterday. Of the four riders, two of them are loaned in this season – i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Vanmarcke is here from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png PFG-Armavia and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Beukeboom will go to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Team BPost next season. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon is the best placed rider, 46” down, while all the others lost time in the split yesterday.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-3.jpg

The front of the race is dominated by three teams – i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Pendleton’s and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma. They are working for sprinter i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Erik Mohs, race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Thomas Faiers and yesterday’s stage winner i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniel Bennati respectively. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina was doing work for yesterday’s second place i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Oscar Guerao earlier as well, but are sitting back at the moment.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon jumps away from the rest of the break to take the points, or more importantly for him the bonus seconds. The gap is out to 6’10” with 90km to go. With only the four riders fatigue is already setting in a bit and the gap is stalling.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-5.jpg

Over the next 70km the gap is steadily reduced by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma, with three riders doing most of the work:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Mickaël Delage
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Wilco Kelderman
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gianni Meersman

They eventually get help from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars Pokerstars and with 6.7km remaining i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars Stef Clement makes the catch and we are due to have a sprint finish, as we were always going to. The rain started to come down just before this catch is made.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-6.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina are the first ones with a train set up. They have had a lot of problems with their trains this season, largely due to the problems which the lead-out riders have over hills, but with this terrain it has come together already. The line is:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Bernaudeau
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Sinner
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao

They are soon joined by:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Castañeda
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-7.jpg

As i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Bernaudeau peels off both i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars set up their trains. The i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma train on the left is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden

Meanwhile the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars train is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dupont
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Teruel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vanoverschelde
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-8.jpg

There is a moment of panic as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Christophe Riblon falls, but no one else goes down with him. However, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Andrei Amador will be worried that his only climbing domestique has fallen.

Either way the three trains pull up fairly level to each other, with French champion i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Sinner clearly the weakest of the three.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-9.jpg

With 1.8km remaining all three trains have their first rider drop off. And i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto is surely going to be called up for irregular sprinting as he pulls off and interrupts the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars sprint train, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs losing the wheel of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin! Hat’s really going to hurt the German’s chances. Meanwhile both i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden decide for long sprints through the middle.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-10.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden hits the front of the pack with 900 to go, but it is now that i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao launch their sprints.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-11.jpg

With 500 to the line i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao is in the lead. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati has some work to do. Meanwhile i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vanoverschelde is coming up quickly through the middle.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-12.jpg

With 200 metres to the line it is down to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati! Who will take this?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Oscar Guerao goes one better than yesterday and takes a huge victory in his first ever Tour de France! That’s his third win of the year, and it is certainly a sweet one!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF3-14.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati was only half a wheel behind the Spaniard, taking second. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest takes third, continuing the strength he showed yesterday. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek shows himself for the first time today and takes fourth. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Castañeda picked the right train, as did the previous two riders, and is handsomely rewarded with a fifth place on the stage. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss probably would have preferred a more difficult stage like tomorrow’s and will be disappointed with his sixth. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden will probably be happy enough with a seventh after he mistimed his sprint. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs can only salvage eighth but can likely blame others for his failure today. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vanoverschelde faded as quickly as he arrived and only manages ninth while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Teruel sneaks his wildcard team into the top ten.

A gap opened up in the sprint, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Tim Dees was half way across and managed to save time a time loss for about 50 riders. The rain really caused some people to struggle. Though i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao are equal on points, the Italian will wear the jersey tomorrow. Other than that there is no news on the jersey front.
