Today’s stage brings the first of the two time trials of this race – a 38.2km course which, while not entirely flat, will certainly suit the specialists. Cunego has already taken a solid GC lead of about a minute over his rivals but this is his weakest discipline, so it could be a good day for Pluchkin and Madrazo particularly. In addition to the tight GC contest there is of course the stage victory to think about, with a number of time trial specialists here to take advantage. They will be departing earlier in the stage, of course. There are two time checks out on course today – one at 15km and another at 29km, in addition to the finish line.
As it happens the first rider out of the gate today is a TT specialist, though not one who is likely to be fighting it out for the win. Still, Olivier Kaisen will give us a decent idea of the sort of times that we can expect from the true experts. His time at the first check is 23’05” and at the second check it is 44’38”.
The Belgian rider finishes the course in 56’21”, which is actually a fairly long time for a course like this. Clearly it is quite tough.
Only 5 riders behind him, however, is a true expert – Marcel Barth. Though he would much rather a pan flat course, he will still likely outperform most riders today. His time though the first check is a new best of 22’49” and he continues this with another strong time at the second check of 44’10”.
His time at the finish is 55’49”, over 30” faster than Kaisen managed. It seems from the time splits that most of the difference can be made up in the second section.
Trailing just behind Barth, both in the sense of being one rider behind him, but also being just slightly off his time, is Freddy Johansson, who finishes the course in 55’54”, just 5” down. It does show how tight this might be today.
The next contender to look threatening is Maciej Bodnar, the Polish national champion in this discipline. He is a better climber than those who have come before him, so that may play into his hands. His time at the first check is 22’48”, just a single second faster. At the second check his time is 44’08”, now 2 seconds faster. Will he take the lead?
Bodnar certainly does with a new best of 55’41”, this time going 8” better.
Just two riders later, however, he has a serious challenger – Marcel Kittel. The German has shown his ability in this discipline this year with a third place on the first time trial in the Giro, and he is clearly here to try the same thing on an even bigger stage. He sets a new best through the first check with a time of 22’39”. His second check is even stronger as he goes through in 43’46”.
His time at the finish is 55’12”, the first rider to even approach the 55 minute mark. That seems like a really strong time!
Another German follows shortly after – Lucas Schädlich. Whereas Kittel was third in the first Giro TT, Schädlich came third in the second Giro TT. Which one of them will get the better of this engagement? Schädlich’s time at the first check is only 22’48”, though that is second best so far. He speeds up a bit through the second check with a time of 44’01”, though once again that is off the mark.
And Schädlich finishes in 55’31”, the second best time so far today, but not good enough to take the lead.
Now we move on to a French contender – in 150th place it is William Bonnet. He is a slightly better climber than the previous two, but can he make that count today? He looks strong through the first check with a new second best time of 22’45”, just 6” off the pace. He loses some of his advantage over Schädlich through the second check, with a time of 44’00”, just a single second faster than the other man.
And Bonnet finishes the course in 55’28”, the second best time so far but still 16” off the pace.
From 150th to 120th we have to wait a while for our next contender but he comes in the form of another Frenchman. Pierre Rolland is one of the better climbers of the TT specialists and he will be hoping to make that count here in front of his home crowd. His time through the first check shows that this climbing ability is serving him well – he sets a new best of 22’31”. Through the second check he extends his lead with a new best of 43’37”, 9” faster than Kittel’s previous best.
Rolland slows a bit towards the end of the course but his time is still a new best – 55’06”, 6” faster than the German managed. There is even more good news for Festina as Tim Dees is the next rider to come through with a strong 55’22”, currently the third best time.
Now coming from a team with a history of strong TT riders, Koen De Kort enters the course. The Dutchman is here in his first ever Tour and already he looks to be making a splash – his time through the first check is the second best at 22’35”. That’s only 4” off the mark. He goes through the second check in 43’45”, slowing down a fraction but still holding on to his podium place.
De Kort continues to struggle with the distance and ends the course in 55’14”, dropping to third, which is still a hugely respectable result for him.
The next contender for the day is Jacob Fiedler. He has had a fantastic season in this discipline so far, winning the Tour of Qatar time trial, as well as coming 4th in the Chrono des Herbiers. Will we see a similar result from the young rider here? It certainly seems that we may as he equals Rolland’s time through the first check! He speeds up over the next segment and sets a new best of 43’34” at the second check. Can he hold this?
It looks like it! Fiedler is our new leader with a time of 55’01”, tragically close to that mental 55 minute mark, but a huge result regardless! Fiedler holds the lead for a while so let’s have a look at the best times at each check:

However, the list of challengers isn’t over and the next challenger is a big one. Jerome Coppel was brought here for the purpose of winning both time trials and it is easy to see why – he won the opener of the Criterium du Dauphine and was second in the other TT stage. Not only that but he was a close second in the Chrono des Herbiers. Will he once again beat Fiedler ? Through the first check we already have the answer to that – he sets a new best time of 21’56”... that’s already 35 seconds faster than anyone else! Coppel only speeds up from here and through the second check his time is 42’24”, now 1’10” up on Fielder.
And in front of home crowds, with every wildly cheering, Coppel finishes the course in a mind-blowing 53’37”, the best time by 1’24”!
So now we move into the realm of the GC contenders as we hit the top 30 overall. First up in 29th place is Spaniard David Abal. This discipline is a good one for him, and with the hills over he will be hoping to make up for lost time. He is only 4’09” down and could easily move himself into the top 20 today, ready for a later strike at the top 10. His first check is a very strong 22’40”. He maintains a good speed through the second check as he goes through in 43’56”. Any time faster than 44 minutes here has proven great today.
He finishes the course in 55’29”, easily amongst the specialists in this discipline, and he will be very pleased with that.
Not all the time trial specialists left earlier in the day – Mikhail Ignatiev is sitting in 24th overall and has been touted as a favourite for the stage. He goes through the first check in a fantastic 22’17”, though it is already 21” slower than Coppel. He keeps this second best time through the second check with 43’15”.
At the finish his time is 54’44”, making Ignatiev only the second rider today to break 55 minutes. A brilliant ride, even if he couldn’t take the win.
Sergio Henao is the next rider up, and he is certainly not going to match the efforts of the previous man out. Still, he will be hoping to keep himself in roughly his present 23rd, if not moving up a little bit. His time through the first check isn’t promising, however, as he goes through in 23’06”. His second check is 44’56”, meaning that Abal has already overtaken him.
Henao now finishes the course in 56’43”, quite a poor time really, but this is not his favourite discipline so it isn’t wholly unexpected.
The French have had a great day today and Romain Sicard will be looking to continue that. He sits in 20th, 3’03” down on GC. Though he isn’t the strongest TT rider, this could be a real opportunity with the home crowd behind him. Certainly through the first check he seems to be rising to the occasion, with a time of 22’41”. He can’t hold this high speed but his second check is still a respectable 44’01”.
Sicard finishes the course in 55’49”, a strong 23rd provisionally and likely better than he thought that he would get today.
Though he hasn’t been touted as a podium contender there can be no doubts that Janez Brajkovic is one of the best-rounded riders in this race. Certainly this discipline is one of his favourites, as shown by his second places at the Tour of California TT and the Tour de Suisse prologue. Will we see an equivalent performance today? It certainly seems that we may as he goes through the first check in 22’17”, the same time as Ignatiev! Brajkovic goes through the second check in 43’20”, keeping his third place.
And Brajkovic finishes the course in 54’46”, just 2” outside of the time of Ignatiev. This is a big ride on an important day and could move him well up the rankings!
Though his team won the opening stage, Bernhard Kohl bled unnecessary time in the hilly stages and it seems unlikely that he can make it back today as this is not his best discipline. Still, he starts the day in 17tth and will want to avoid dropping too much away from that. Through the first check the Austrian sets a time of 23’04”, which is fairly lacklustre. He continues to struggle through the second check as he goes through in 44’53”.
Kohl finishes the course in 56’39”, which is only good enough for provisional 73rd and may well see him drop out of the top 20 depending on how other results go today.
One of the riders who will have been looking forward to today is Benat Intxausti. The Spaniard was another one of those riders who lost time in the hills, but this is a great opportunity to move himself up into the top ten as he sits just 1’57” down overall. His initial time is only 22’40”, however, which is okay but perhaps not as good as may have been hoped for. The second check reads 43’58”, leaving him roughly equal with Sicard’s time.
Intxausti finishes the course in 55’31” which, while far from awful, is still perhaps a touch disappointing.
One of the last couple of riders capable of launching a serious assault on the top end of the leader board is Vuelta winner Justo Tenorio. He won the ITT in that race and was on the podium in the opening prologue. He sits in 12th at the moment here, but that is likely to improve as he goes through the first check in 22’24”, the fourth best time so far today. His second check is another strong one – 43’23”.
The Spanish national champion finishes the course in 54’48”, just 2” slower than Brajkovic and good enough for fourth.
Tour de Suisse winner Andrei Amador is another strong TT rider, if not quite as good as Tenorio. Certainly a hillier course would be more to his liking. Either way the Costa Rican sits in 11th and will be hoping to move deep into the top ten. His time at teh first check is 22’42”, just a little bit more disappointing than was perhaps to be expected. He maintains this 2 second deficit to Intxausti through the second check with a time of 44 minutes flat.
Amador crosses the line in 55’32”, provisionally 17th place. This isn’t too bad but he surely would have preferred to be in the top ten and may indeed have been expecting it.
Peter Velits is the first of the riders in the top ten and he is already looking like he could be something of a surprise package this year. His real test will come in the mountains. He goes through the first check in 22’50”, which is a fairly solid result for someone of his calibre. Through the second check he manages 44’16”, keeping him about where he could be expected to perform.
And Velits finishes the course in 55’53”, a solid 33rd.
Andy Schleck is the next up and while he isn’t terrible in this discipline, today will still mostly be about limiting losses to those who are just outside the top ten, so that he can claw time back in the mountains. Not only that but he will have to avoid losing too much time to the other podium contenders. His time through the first check is a respectable 22’54”. Through the second check he shows no signs of fading with a time of 44’25”.
With a time of 56’03” Schleck can feel fairly happy. It is only 43rd on the day but he should avoid losing too much time to those around him.
Up in 7th place is Walter Pedraza, perhaps feeling lucky that he hasn’t lost any time yet. That may well change today, as this is one discipline he does not excel at. Through the first check his time is 23’15”, already dropping close to half a minute to those behind him. Things only get worse through the second check as he clocks a time of 45’06”, meaning that he will most likely be dropping well out of the top ten today.
Pedraza finishes the course in 56’52”, barely putting him inside the top 100 times for the day. He will surely be disappointed but it may give him some freedom in the mountains.
On the other end of the scale is 6th overall Angel Madrazo. As one of the biggest contenders for the win here in France, this is an important day for him. He is a strong time trialist and will be hoping to close the deficit that has already opened to Cunego. He starts the day 1’16” down and with a good ride could close all of that. His time through the first check is a great 22’33”. He keeps the pressure on with a strong 43’44” at the second intermediate time.
And really piling the pressure on, Madrazo finishes in 55’14”, putting him in 8th place at the moment. That was a great ride and could be enough to push him at least on to the podium over night and possibly into the leader’s jersey.
This has already been a more spectacular Tour de France than Thomas Faiers could ever imagine, given that he has already had a stint in yellow. Now he has to get out there and fight for a strong GC position. Kohl failed to perform earlier but the young British rider could put in a strong result today. Unfortunately his time at the first check is only 23’02” and he appears to be drained after holding on almost all day yesterday. He can only manage 44’41” at the second check, and things are looking worse and worse.
Finally Faiers finishes in 56’21”, only good enough for 60th at the moment. At least he has already had a great time here and really made a name for himself.
Rasmus Guldhammer has had a great race so far in what has been a bit of a breakout season for him. He sits in fourth but he is widely tipped to lose that today as this is easily his weakest discipline. His time at the first check is a true indication of that as he goes through in 23’20”. Things don’t look any better at the second check as he goes through in 45’21”.
The young Danish rider finishes the course in 57’12”, which puts him provisionally 108th. That was a fairly poor ride but he isn’t the team leader here...
That honour goes to Aleksandr Pluchkin, the last big favourite for this stage. The Moldovan contender sits in third overall, exactly 1 minute down on Cunego and 16 seconds ahead of Madrazo. That means that, in order to take yellow today he has to get a time of at least 55’30” to stay ahead of the Spaniard, while still beating Cunego. Let’s see how that pans out. Through the first check Pluchkin’s time is 22’33”, exactly the same as Madrazo. At the second check he has only lost 1 second on his rival with a time of 43’45”. This is looking like a fast time indeed!
And Pluchkin finishes the course in a time of 55’14”... less than a second behind Madrazo. So that’s one of the two goals completed in his quest to take yellow today.
Simone Ponzi is the next rider up, but this is not a day for him at all. He isn’t riding for GC and in fact losing time would probably be an advantage for him. He finishes the course in 56’28”, which is 71st on the day, but that likely won’t have a lot of bearing on the GC in the end.
On the other hand, all eyes are on Damiano Cunego. He needs a time of 56’14” in order to hold on to his leader’s jersey, otherwise Pluchkin will take over. He comes through the first check point in a time of 22’54”. He has lost only 19 seconds of his 1 minute advantage so far. He approaches the second check and... 44’34” is his time. What a turn around! He has now lost 49 seconds and things are looking dangerous for the defending champion!
And he goes through the final time check and his time is...
Spoiler
56’14”!
But wait! That’s exactly what he needed! Cunego and Pluchkin are now absolutely equal on time! This is going to come down to fractions of a second. So who will hold the yellow jersey overnight and into the first mountain stage tomorrow?
Spoiler
Aleksandr Pluchkin takes over the yellow jersey!
