Tour of Sochi - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
Another flat stage, but with various hills to make things interesting. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Hoffman might still fancy his chances, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Geschke has proven this season to be strong on these sort of stages - assuming Rothaus ride for him, Cucinotta might get in the way there.

And if Hoffman gets himself in a good position for the win, the rest of yesterday's podium could do also: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Mezgec and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazajev.

But let's not ignore that final climb, with it's summit just 10km from the line. Can somebody use it as a launchpad for victory? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kritskiy was already looking lively in the Stage 1 sprint.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-1.jpg

Nolan Hoffman is wearing the Yellow jersey. A sight to give many puncheurs in the division nightmares.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-2.jpg

Four men make it into the breakaway, on a day where there is a real chance for one of them to score enough points to ultimately win the King of the Mountains classification. They all know it and are keen to fight it out for the points.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-3.jpg

The order at the top of the first climb is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Penasa, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Passeron, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Bystrom - with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Kaisen lagging behind.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Passeron is the strongest climber in the break and battles back to win the next climb.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-5.jpg

And most importantly, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Passeron also wins the third climb - with 16 points on offer as a Category 1 climb.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-6.jpg

Kaisen was dropped for good on that climb, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Samuel Sanchez went on the attack to pick up a couple of points for 5th place over the top.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Passeron was not in a sharing mood today as he also won the intermediate sprint, and the three remaining riders in the break still clear at 20km to go, but with only 53 seconds to play with.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-7.jpg

They start to attack each other, which actually helps to extend their time in front of the peloton. This helps i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Passeron earn yet more King of the Mountains points, leaving Penasa and Bystrom behind now.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-8.jpg

The gap remains up at 52 seconds as the peloton summit, which is no mean feat as the peloton rode hard up that climb - as evidenced by the names at the front:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Betancourt
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Fuglsang
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Dekker
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Chernetskiy
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Hoffman
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kritskiy
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Van Huffel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Boom
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Zabriskie
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Popkov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Huducek
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cre_zps8fb855ae.png Niemiec
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Costa

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-9.jpg

No attacks however, and with the potential danger over, many of them can now relax and fall back into the peloton as the stage battle goes on around them.

But the battle for victory is actually still up ahead. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Passeron is still going, 30 seconds with 3km to go!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-10.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Metinvest have tried to do some chasing, and take advantage of Hoffman's good legs today, but their leadout is lacking. Brambilla manages to force himself to the front to offer something.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-11.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Polivoda, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Modolo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazajev are up here, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Hoffman is forced to go early at 2.1km to go. Partly through lack of leadout, partly because its the best chance he has of catching Passeron.

The Frenchman is on his last reserves, but still leads into the final kilometre.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-12.jpg

Modolo could not keep up with the sprint and that hinders i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazajev, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Arashiro is now up towards the front as is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-13.jpg

Just the final turn left for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Passeron: the sprinters simply arent closing fast enough!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-14.jpg

No time for a celebration, as he takes the win for Rothaus!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-15.jpg

Fast finishing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby takes 2nd, while having sat on Hoffman's wheel for most of 2 kilometres, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Polivoda cheekily nips past on the line for 3rd place.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/soc2-16.jpg

That's an important move, as it denies Hoffman any bonus seconds. So, having won the intermediate sprint earlier in the day aswell, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Passeron takes the race lead.

Behind Hoffman on the stage, there is an Arashiro sandwich for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Tinkoff with Kritskiy 5th and Rovny 7th. Fuglsang, Bazajev and Mandri complete the Top 10.
