Yesterdays GC attack by some teams did cost a lot of energy. So today it`s less hilly and might be a chance for the sprinters again.
The final though mustn`t be underestimated as it has quite a few tough uphill parts and actually the last 300m are slightly uphill as well.
So the pure sprinters once again not on their best terrain.
Again 3 riders in the breakaway.
Gruzdev
Lemus Davila
Kinoshita
All 3 are 2'23 behind and not the biggest danger.
By far Kinoshita takes the intermediate sprint. Lemus Davila and Gruzdev only see him from several meters behind.
120km and a 8min gap. Time for the peloton to accelerate a bit.
Privatbank with their sprinters Vaitkus and Vanoverschelde. Bacardi with Aberasturi and Karcher for Kupfernagel are the most probable bets.
No BelarusBank in the chasing today.
But eventually Karcher is planing to create some splits in the hilly final again. Yesterday this worked perfectly.
A much closer fight for the KoM points. Gruzdev ahead of Lemus Davila and Kinoshita in the end.
Wind speed of more than 50km/h. And we see the first echelons here in Oman.
62 riders in the front group around the GC riders and the leader jersey of Hutarovich.
6 riders a bit behind including Kupfernagel and Clarke, who did miss the split.
74 riders in the second peloton including several top sprinters:
Vaitkus
Vanoverschelde
Park
Nepomnyachsniy
Aberasturi
Van Hummel
Nateghi
Andriato
Tolleson
Keough
Nelson
Next to those sprinters behind also some climbers such as
Vasquez
Dyachenko
Samwel
Devolder
The Kupfernagel group is back in the peloton but the two splitted fields are still chasing each other.
The 2nd group with Bacardi and Privatbank in the lead to bring back their top sprinters.
The first group with Karcher and BelarusBank as those teams still have their sprinters in a good position.
Even though the gap was at more than 2min at times, the fusion happened several kilometers later. The two front teams just couldn`t keep such a high pace for ~100km with the Green Mountain still to come tomorrow.
Kinoshita, Gruzdev, Lemus Davila the order at the 2nd sprint as well.
And just like on the first stage, Lemus Davila stopps chasing here and falls back into the peloton. He really should try to avoid that or his manager might not want to let him rider anymore.
The wind even got stronger towards the end and so we have the next echelons.
Being behind some mentionable names:
Vanoverschelde, Gomenyuk, Polivoda
Clarke
Zeits, Park
Keough, Reinhardt
Nateghi
Vasquez
The final kilometers are not that easy. Many uphill kilometers even though not on the highest slopes. But on those hills, the sprinters might struggle and a puncheur could attack and gain a few seconds.
Also Ndbri is losing contact now. The Kenyan climber does not like those conditions here and would prefer to ride uphill the whole day instead.
Responsible for those echelons is BelarusBank and in especially Kunitski, who is riding in the first position for lots of kilometers already.
A bit more than 5km to go and the breakaway still has a 1min gap for Kinoshita and 30s less for Gruzdev.
65 riders only left in the peloton!
3,5km and still a nice gap for Kinoshita. Gruzdev still in between both groups.
Bacardi and Karcher with something you might call trains. But actually it`s just one helper with the main sprinter behind.
Samokhvalov Aberasturi Sousa Vaitkus Kupfernagel Nepomnyachsniy Tolleson Van Hummel Van Asbroeck Andriato Chuzhda- - - Bar Simon Hutarovich
BelarusBank really struggles to form their train here as Hutarovich is blocked behind or has no energy left.
Samokhvalov opens the sprint and Gruzdev is caught. Kinoshita though still far ahead.
Aberasturi and Vaitkus in a perfect position.
1,1km and Aberasturi goes into the wind with Vaitkus, Kupfernagel and Nepomnyachsniy right behind him.
The finish is so close but the uphill section hurts Kinoshita a lot after the long escape.
The sprinters coming closer with every meter.
500m too much. Kinoshita is caught and Vaitkus takes the lead with Aberasturi struggling.
Kupfernagel will pass him soon as well, while from behind we see the hilly sprinters Simon and Bar coming fast and out of nowhere also race leader Hutarovich and GC rider Marquez.
Aberasturi really struggling now losing position for position.
Vaitkus ahead of Kupfernagel but the fastest right now are the 3, who started the sprint late: Simon, Hutarovich and Bar.
But it`s enough for Vaitkus. He takes the win and proves a good form despite him being in the second peloton earlier on. Good for the team that he found his way back as Vanoverschelde does not seem to be as strong as expected.
But look at the 2nd. From far far behind Hutarovich had to start the sprint and the course musn`t have been 1m longer for Vaitkus. Photo finish between both with Hutarovich as 2nd.
Also Simon as 3rd was very close in the end.
Kupfernagel as 4th just ahead of Bar.
Behind a surprising strong Quickstep dup Marquez and Waeytens with Nerz also passing Aberasturi and Cataldo to come over the line as 10th ahead of Speirs.
So the final indeed was harder than some had thought. And those who went too early lost in the end.
Several riders lost a lot of time today. In the end also Agudelo, Devolder and Serpa. All couldn`t follow and lost 1'42. Even more for the earlier dropped riders.
