Vuelta al Tachira - Stage 3
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_001_zpsfc69fe1c.png

And here we go with the third flat stage. Again a rather short one (126km) with only three speedbumps, that ain't expect to be crucial though.

CSC's Anton Martin succesfully defended his race-lead thanks to bonus seconds in intermediates yesterday.. will we see the same tactics today? And will Bennett repeat his victory to attack the GC-lead?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_002_zps5165c4cd.jpg

The question regarding CSC's tactics is answered quickly: while there ain't a huge gap by now (97km to go), it looks like a group of 4 riders is allowed to stay clear from the bunch today.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Smit, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Tatarinov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Haig and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Yates

All four had been in breakaways (or attempts) before, with Yates dominating the intermediate sprints in the opening stage. Will he strike again?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_003_zps6755b0c5.jpg

We don't know yet. The peloton starts chasing with 70km remaining, trying to narrow a 3-minutes gap. CSC and Bacardi share this work.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_004_zpsd9f52f04.jpg

The escapees reach the first sprint with still a decent gap and it's again Yates to take out the sprint in style:

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/points_zps63f449ab.png Sprint #1i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Yatesi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Smiti439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Haig

This may even help him keeping a nice GC-position, same goes for Haig, who already collected some seconds in the opener as well.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_005_zps068df152.jpg

Yates and Smit later dropped their breakaway companions, trying to hold off the nearing bunch at least until the second sprint.. and they did, even though it's a close one. With 29km remaining, the two last escapees are soon to be caught by bunch, where race-leader Anton Martin sprints for 2 seconds at the sprint!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/points_zps63f449ab.png Sprint #2i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Yatesi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Smiti439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Anton Martin

Valuable seconds for Martin, who still needs to deliver in the bunch sprint, which is almost certain to happen without any escapees left in the mix for the stage win.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_006_zps16d719b2.jpg

Yes, no more attacks until the peloton enters the final 3km of today's stage! The situation at the front of the bunch looks a bit chaotic this time, but the so far dominating teams are there:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Bacardi (though with rather strange tactics), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Privatbank and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Jaguar set up the trains, with the latter once again as the best organized (it seems).. the other sprinters trying to fight for good positions, as always.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_007_zpscaefe9a3.jpg

The first serious move comes from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Rangel though! The Mexican kicks off the sprint 1.5km before finish, establishing a small gap quickly!

A few metres behind, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Ayoune once again gives the final leadout for Bennett, with again i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Brea at his wheel.. all others seem to struggle a bit for now, but it's still a way to go.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_008_zps3a1ee865.jpg

Rangel faces a tough final kilometre with the bigger guns now in full sprint-mode under the kite:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Rangel

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bennett (now leaving Ayoune's slipstream)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Brea

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Rizza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Vanoverschelde
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Cucinotta
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Sonnery
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi

seem to be the names in the mix for the line honours. No sign of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Anton Martin yet!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_009_zpsba0d22c6.jpg

And Rangel is done! He loses several positions quickly and won't stand a chance here.

Bennett in the leading position, again fighting against Brea and also Rizza may join this battle. Just like Vanoverschelde and also Aberasturi and Cucinotta, if they can accelerate for a great finish!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_010_zps53dd07ba.jpg

It's getting closer behind Bennett, who still holds on to his leading position:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bennett
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Brea
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Rizza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Vanoverschelde
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi

fight for the podium! The latter with a strong but maybe late finishing kick, as he may be boxed in now!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_011_zpse31ef33f.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bennett makes it two in a row! Again a perfectly timed sprint and again some credit to Ayoune for a great leadout. This will also be the GC-lead for the sprinter, as Anton Martin couldn't collect more than those two seconds in the intermediate sprint.

In a photo finish for the further positions, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Rizza sprinted for 2nd ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Vanoverschelde.. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Brea and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Aberasturi complete today's Top-5 ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Cucinotta and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Sonnery, who just seems to miss those extra kick to sprint to a Top-5 here.

In other news, we have to note, that 4 riders (3 of today's escapees) got dropped eventually. Bad news for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Haig and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Smit, who both could have been in the Top-10 thanks to bonus seconds. Just like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Yates, who enters tomorrow's hilly stage as GC's 3rd!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/Tach_3_012_zpscfdc7903.jpg

Bennett slips into to yellow for one day, but is likely to lose this shirt in the challenging hills tomorrow. Still a nice bonus for both him and the team. Well deserved after two perfect sprints.
