Urkiola Igoera - Subida Urkiola
The Rider

Race Favourites:

A big one gets away.

It is not often you see decent sized breaks get away recently, well we would today. A 12 man break was allowed to form, the riders:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.pngKudus
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.pngSquire

The break in action.

The race favourites' domestiques set the pace through rustic Spain.

.....................

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur4_zps5f72d3ea.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Project: Africa show their faith in their leader. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Augustyn is relayed back to the peloton, early on in stage, after having a mechanical.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur5_zpsd058401c.jpg
60 KM to go: Break @ 3'33.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png FCB - Polska are doing most of the pace setting the first time up the Alto de Urkiola. The break well under control. Over the top of the first ascent the peloton would be pretty much all together. As of yet, no action from the favourites.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur6_zps2a1566a8.jpg
47 KM to go.

On the next incline, with the break now 2'30 ahead, we see a big attack from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo.

But, he wouldn't be the only one to attack...

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur7_zpse556009d.jpg

Shortly afterwards we see attacks out of the favourites group by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Kiserlovski and then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur8_zps601075e4.jpg

The attacks from these, outside favourites, really lights up the race. The peloton increases its speed and is quickly whittled down to around 74 riders.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur9_zps39b56cd6.jpg
Cataldo charges on.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo is clearly on a good day today. Over the next, short & sharp, incline he catches and passes the original break of the day.

With 26 KM to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo has 1'01 of an advantage over the next group on the road which is a 74 man favourites group. The biggest names missing from this group are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Vazquez, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Jaramillo and the likes of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Mat Senan from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Compal-Merida.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur10_zps3e0054c2.jpg
The race breaks up before the final climb.

The Race with 16 KM to go:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.pngCataldo
Intxausti, Marquez & Abal@ '28
Kiserlovski@ '43
Ji, Nazaret, Kashechkin, Samwel, Stetina, Plaza & Gerdemann@ 1'30
Efimikin@ 2'00
Augustyn, Rohregger, Zdbri@ 2'40

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo still leads with the final climb fast approaching. However, some unexpected attacking on the flat from the big favourites really destroys many. All of the above names are ahead of a 80 man peloton....

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur11_zpscc2c2339.jpg
The peloton sits up.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Nerz is the biggest name in the peloton, but at this stage his chances of a good place look over.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur12_zps12f644bb.jpg
The final climb.

After a good old game of cat and mouse it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez who distances his Spanish companions with 6 KM to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo is well within his sights.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur13_zps8c2d6d01.jpg
Under 5 KM to go.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Gerdemann leads a small group as the peloton rallies to eat up the ground in front of them. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Team Puma - SAP are the team which have brought the peloton back into contention for a top 5.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur14_zpscb78932a.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Team Puma - SAP's chasing was not in vein. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Nerz puts in a big attack and goes flying by the likes of Nazaret and Gerdemann.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur15_zpscedeebb6.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Nerz continues on, with Intxausti, Abal and Kiserlovski only around '25 seconds ahead with under 2 kilometres to go. The battle for third will be a close one.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur16_zpsb93ca3f7.jpg
1 KM to go.

But, well ahead of the rest is the battle for the win. Going into the last kilometre
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo leads
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez by around '10. The Italian has been on the attack for the last 47 kilometeres, but surely i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez would have caught the Italian by now if he was capable.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur17_zpsbab4a32c.jpg

The blinding sun offers the last moment of agony before the finish. Can Cataldo hold on?

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur18_zps068375b7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo takes the win! A stunning solo effort, showing plenty of resistance to hold off Marquez, is rewarded with the win today.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez has to settle for second, but he once again shows his immense ability by out-climbing his rivals.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur19_zpsae774026.jpg

Race favourite i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Intxausti rounds out the podium today, winning the battle against i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal, in the end, who had to settle for fourth place.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/ur20_zpsd1ed5c07.jpg

After his team rallied i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Nerz put in a great climb to end the stage in 5th place, out-climbing the likes of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Kiserlovski and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Gerdemann, after a solid climb, leads home a large group for 9th place, his team will be happy with that display.
