Today is the last day of the 2013 Sibiu Tour, which ends with a hilly stage after four days of exciting races. The stage favourites are race leader Taaramae, his teammate Levarlet and Dekker who has had a poor race so far. However, it could end up being a day for a breakaway to take the win.
Speaking of breakaways, one is let go very early today as the peloton looks set for a rest day. Nine men go off the front, namely Chacon, Ovechkin, Zabel, Schachmann, Hoelgaard, Georgiev, Taciak, Hasanovic and Báez. Of those, Hasanovic is the closest GC wise (11’57” behind) while Taciak can win the Points jersey if he wins enough Intermediate Sprints and gets a good Stage Result (28pts behind).
Their gap is allowed to swell rapidly though thanks to the peloton riding at a pedestrian pace, under the control of Bouygues for race leader Taaramae. They let it go out to 5 minutes by the time the men out front reach the first sprints.
They don’t sprint however, which is strange considering Taciak’s chances. Schachmann takes it ahead of Hoelgaard and Ovechkin, as he happened to be on the front at the right time. The same happens at the KOTM sprint right after, which is more understandable as none of these riders can catch leader Perez Sanchez. Hasanovic rolls over in first ahead of Zabel and Chacon.
The gap continues to grow as the stage unfolds, and with 80 kilometers left it has reached 9 minutes. With no chase organized still, it looks likely that the front group will take victory today.
Back up at the front there is an attack from Chacon. The Spaniard looks to be trying to emulate teammate Perez Sanchez, who won yesterday. He pulls out a 30” gap quickly and passes through the two Mountain Sprints and one Intermediate Sprint in first, as he tries to maintain his gap.
He is eventually caught though, thanks to some good cooperation. With 40 kilometers left, the gap has finally reached 10 minutes. It is definite that that these nine riders will fight it out for the victory.
Bouygues are still in control, and have lifted the pace a little. Hasanovic could well overtake Taaramae if given a couple more minutes so they decide to keep the gap as it is.
The breakaway now pass under the 20 kilometers to go banner. Two final sprints have been passed, where Hasanovic took the Mountain Sprint and Schachmann takes the Intermediate. Taciak finishes third, meaning he has to finish in the top-2 today to take the points jersey.
Before the stage is decided in a sprint, Ovechkin decides attacking is worth one last go. Hasanovic follows and the two riders quickly establish a half minute gap.
A chase is organized behind, but as they pass under the 10 kilometers left flag, the two riders remain just as far away. If they don’t catch them soon, it will be too late.
With just 5000m left for the two at the front, they can sense victory. Behind, there is an organized chase finally taking place, but it could be too late for those left behind.
There is a big push on the front from Zabel though which just about closes the gap as the sprint starts. The young German is the best sprinter in the group, and must be the favourite from here as he is perfectly positioned.
With 1500m to go Georgiev, Ovechkin and Schachmann share the lead, but Hoelgaard is coming through fast from behind. Zabel is yet to start sprinting.
Hoelgaard moves into the lead under the kite, but Zabel is coming through strongly. Taciak is in third and is moving through, and needs to overtake one of the front two to take the points jersey.
Around the final bend the Zabel missile flies into the lead!
The young German takes a great victory, dominating the final sprint and showing flashes of his dad. Hoelgaard takes second, while Taciak comes agonizingly close to the points competition, finishing two points behind Taaramae in the end as third isn’t enough.
Báez gets fourth in the end, ahead of Chacon who rounds out the top 5. Georgiev, Schachmann and Ovechkin finish sixth to eighth, while Hasanovic can only manage ninth. He has a consolation prize though, if their group finishes exactly 10’00” ahead of the peloton he will move into the top 10 overall.
Bibby wins the sprint for tenth and the clock is stopped on… 9’56”. Hasanovic will have to settle for eleventh overall. All of the top 10 stayed safely in the peloton, so that will stay the same as after yesterday.
After yesterday’s exploits however, Ratiy suffered today and lost 1’40” after being dropped with a number of other riders. Some mixed fortunes for the Volkswagen team today.
That doesn’t matter to Rein Taaramae though, who wins the first ever Sibiu Tour thanks to a string of solid performances. Bouygues will be very pleased with his performance, which pushes them further towards promotion back to the ProTour. He also wins the Points competition, Perez Sanchez takes the King of the Mountains and Alarcon the White jersey. Sadly for Meiji, they lose the lead in the teams classification after not getting a man in the break today. As a result Tinkoff take the teams competition.
