Sibiu Tour - Stage 5
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Sibiu5_zpse04cb0f5.png

Today is the last day of the 2013 Sibiu Tour, which ends with a hilly stage after four days of exciting races. The stage favourites are race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae, his teammate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Levarlet and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Dekker who has had a poor race so far. However, it could end up being a day for a breakaway to take the win.

Speaking of breakaways, one is let go very early today as the peloton looks set for a rest day. Nine men go off the front, namely i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Chacon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Ovechkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Schachmann, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Hoelgaard, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Georgiev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Taciak, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Báez. Of those, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic is the closest GC wise (11’57” behind) while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Taciak can win the Points jersey if he wins enough Intermediate Sprints and gets a good Stage Result (28pts behind).

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0524_zps29ff1b90.jpg

Their gap is allowed to swell rapidly though thanks to the peloton riding at a pedestrian pace, under the control of Bouygues for race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae. They let it go out to 5 minutes by the time the men out front reach the first sprints.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0529_zpscc8d155a.jpg

They don’t sprint however, which is strange considering i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Taciak’s chances. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Schachmann takes it ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Hoelgaard and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Ovechkin, as he happened to be on the front at the right time. The same happens at the KOTM sprint right after, which is more understandable as none of these riders can catch leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Perez Sanchez. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic rolls over in first ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Chacon.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0536_zps677a3042.jpg

The gap continues to grow as the stage unfolds, and with 80 kilometers left it has reached 9 minutes. With no chase organized still, it looks likely that the front group will take victory today.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0542_zpsc1abb396.jpg

Back up at the front there is an attack from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Chacon. The Spaniard looks to be trying to emulate teammate Perez Sanchez, who won yesterday. He pulls out a 30” gap quickly and passes through the two Mountain Sprints and one Intermediate Sprint in first, as he tries to maintain his gap.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0544_zps8552beda.jpg

He is eventually caught though, thanks to some good cooperation. With 40 kilometers left, the gap has finally reached 10 minutes. It is definite that that these nine riders will fight it out for the victory.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0546_zpse2379138.jpg

Bouygues are still in control, and have lifted the pace a little. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic could well overtake i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae if given a couple more minutes so they decide to keep the gap as it is.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0548_zps935aaa2f.jpg

The breakaway now pass under the 20 kilometers to go banner. Two final sprints have been passed, where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic took the Mountain Sprint and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Schachmann takes the Intermediate. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Taciak finishes third, meaning he has to finish in the top-2 today to take the points jersey.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0550_zps6d2669ba.jpg

Before the stage is decided in a sprint, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Ovechkin decides attacking is worth one last go. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic follows and the two riders quickly establish a half minute gap.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0553_zps5a84b3ce.jpg

A chase is organized behind, but as they pass under the 10 kilometers left flag, the two riders remain just as far away. If they don’t catch them soon, it will be too late.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0555_zps476e7140.jpg

With just 5000m left for the two at the front, they can sense victory. Behind, there is an organized chase finally taking place, but it could be too late for those left behind.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0560_zps42678fe3.jpg

There is a big push on the front from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel though which just about closes the gap as the sprint starts. The young German is the best sprinter in the group, and must be the favourite from here as he is perfectly positioned.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0564_zps6ff50600.jpg

With 1500m to go Georgiev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Ovechkin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Schachmann share the lead, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Hoelgaard is coming through fast from behind. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel is yet to start sprinting.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0566_zps915ad8a4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Hoelgaard moves into the lead under the kite, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel is coming through strongly. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Taciak is in third and is moving through, and needs to overtake one of the front two to take the points jersey.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0569_zps8ce3f89a.jpg

Around the final bend the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel missile flies into the lead!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0572_zpse568548d.jpg

The young German takes a great victory, dominating the final sprint and showing flashes of his dad. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Hoelgaard takes second, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Taciak comes agonizingly close to the points competition, finishing two points behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae in the end as third isn’t enough.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Báez gets fourth in the end, ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Chacon who rounds out the top 5. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Georgiev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Schachmann and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Ovechkin finish sixth to eighth, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic can only manage ninth. He has a consolation prize though, if their group finishes exactly 10’00” ahead of the peloton he will move into the top 10 overall.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0574_zps2f033c2c.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby wins the sprint for tenth and the clock is stopped on… 9’56”. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic will have to settle for eleventh overall. All of the top 10 stayed safely in the peloton, so that will stay the same as after yesterday.

After yesterday’s exploits however, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy suffered today and lost 1’40” after being dropped with a number of other riders. Some mixed fortunes for the Volkswagen team today.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0577_zpsb77540f3.jpg

That doesn’t matter to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Rein Taaramae though, who wins the first ever Sibiu Tour thanks to a string of solid performances. Bouygues will be very pleased with his performance, which pushes them further towards promotion back to the ProTour. He also wins the Points competition, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Perez Sanchez takes the King of the Mountains and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Alarcon the White jersey. Sadly for Meiji, they lose the lead in the teams classification after not getting a man in the break today. As a result Tinkoff take the teams competition.
