Welcome once more to Romania for stage 4 of the 2013 Sibiu Tour. Today is the second mountain stage of the race, and going into it the general classification is finely poised at the top. Lofkvist leads the race overnight but that lead could be sacrificed to one of the better climbers today. The stage favourites are the three big climbers in the race, whose fortunes have been mixed: Dekker, Taaramae and Alarcon.
Moving on, the breakaway is quickly established. The names are Vorganov, Vichot, Perez Sanchez (who is the joint KOTM leader on 16pts), Sarmiento and Kozontchuk, of which Kozontchuk is the closest GC wise (38th @ 8’19”). There isn’t a fast chase, however Swedbank are keeping the pace relatively high on the front.
Approaching the first intermediate sprint of the day though, there isn’t a big gap back to the peloton. There is no fight for the points, as Vichot rolls through in first uncontested. It seems that they are more focused on getting away from the jaws of the bunch.
However, this isn’t the same at the first KOTM sprint. The gap is still just 45” when Sarmiento crosses the line first, ahead of Kozontchuk and Vichot in that order. Surprisingly, Perez Sanchez is the only one not to sprint despite being on the cusp of leading the competition.
The break is eventually let free, as the pace slows back in the pack. Swedbank are still in control but set an easier pace to follow, eventually letting the gap swell to three minutes where the break went through another sprint which was uncontested, top points taken by Kozontchuk this time.
Hitting the final climb the pace is upped by the controlling Swedish squad but the gap still stands at 3’20”, and that will be a hard gap to close in the next 15 kilometers.
Unsurprisingly the attacks are soon to start, the first one coming from Ratiy (19th @ 2’50”) who has had a poor tour so far. That looks like it could be rectified however, as a gap of a minute is quickly pulled out over an unorganized peloton.
That is followed by another flurry of attacks from Shimizu, Ghisalberti, Der and Delgado. They all temporarily pull out 20” but are pulled back by Swedbank, with the exception of Shimizu who continues to chase Ratiy.
Back at the very front all five attackers are still there as the group go under 10 kilometers to go. Their gap has been cut significantly but there is still some hope as the climb flattens out for a few of these last ten kilometers which could cut the time gains from behind.
Ratiy can see the front group though, and has a 1’20” advantage over the bunch which is starting to shed riders. The Ukranian could be looking at a stage win if he can surpass the leading group.
Back in the peloton things have started to become frustrating as Swedbank has run out of riders so the chase has come to a halt. Lofkvist doesn’t want to give his lead away to Ratiy and his ever increasing advantage and attacks, followed by Taaramae.
However that backfires as the Estonian flies past him and up the road. As the Bouygues leader is only 16” back in the overall standings this looks dangerous as he rides through the gap to Shimizu.
Back in the pack another group has gone off the front, containing overall heavyweights Kashechkin, Karpets, Bibby and Popovych. That has left Abal, Alarcon, Caruso and Dekker stranded back in the pack.
The group at the front has split now, with Perez Sanchez and Sarmiento breaking from the other three, who have now been joined by Ratiy. Taaramae is also approaching so the two out the front will do well to hold on.
A look at the current situation on the road:
1'11" 1'59" 2'30" -> 22" -> 49" -> 48" -> 31" Perez Sanchez Vorganov Taaramae Shimizu Caruso Sarmiento Ratiy Vichot Lofkvist Abal Kozontchuk Kashechkin Popovych Karpets Dekker Bibby Alarcon Iglinski Ji Devolder
With just 3000m left, the two men can sense victory. Ratiy is still pulling hard behind them, but is struggling to close the final few meters.
Lofkvist breaks from his Japanese counterpart and sets off in pursuit of Taaramae, who has made the junction to the Ratiy group. The Swede needs to keep the gap within 5” when he crosses the line, discounting bonus seconds.
Meanwhile, Sarmiento and Perez Sanchez have reached the last kilometer and will sprint for the victory!
As the sprint begins Lofkvist has almost caught Taaramae as he desperately tries to claw back the last few meters.
The front two are into the last 400m, and the Spaniard has taken the lead…
And Perez Sanchez takes the win, and along with it takes a commanding lead in the King of the Mountains classification here in Romania! He continues Iberia’s great form this season, which contrasts with the fortunes of Evian, who will be happy with Sarmiento’s second place.
Ratiy claims third ahead of Taaramae. The clock starts on Lofkvist, and it quickly becomes apparent that the 20” gap will lead to him losing the leaders jersey.
Alarcon then leads home a big group of favourites in sixth, with Kozontchuk, Vorganov, Dekker and Caruso rounding off the top 10. They finish 1’06” behind the winner. All of the big favourites are there, preventing a major GC shuffle overnight.
There is one big change though: Taaramae takes the leaders jersey! The Estonian will enjoy tonight knowing that if he endures a hilly stage tomorrow without any problems he will win the race.
