Sibiu Tour - Stage 4
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Sibiu4_zps7e98b6a6.png

Welcome once more to Romania for stage 4 of the 2013 Sibiu Tour. Today is the second mountain stage of the race, and going into it the general classification is finely poised at the top. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Lofkvist leads the race overnight but that lead could be sacrificed to one of the better climbers today. The stage favourites are the three big climbers in the race, whose fortunes have been mixed: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Dekker, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Alarcon.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0467_zps5a232377.jpg

Moving on, the breakaway is quickly established. The names are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Vorganov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Vichot, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Perez Sanchez (who is the joint KOTM leader on 16pts), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kozontchuk, of which i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kozontchuk is the closest GC wise (38th @ 8’19”). There isn’t a fast chase, however Swedbank are keeping the pace relatively high on the front.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0455_zpsb199934a.jpg

Approaching the first intermediate sprint of the day though, there isn’t a big gap back to the peloton. There is no fight for the points, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Vichot rolls through in first uncontested. It seems that they are more focused on getting away from the jaws of the bunch.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0461_zps21ab8290.jpg

However, this isn’t the same at the first KOTM sprint. The gap is still just 45” when i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento crosses the line first, ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kozontchuk and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Vichot in that order. Surprisingly, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Perez Sanchez is the only one not to sprint despite being on the cusp of leading the competition.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0463_zpsb2b41008.jpg

The break is eventually let free, as the pace slows back in the pack. Swedbank are still in control but set an easier pace to follow, eventually letting the gap swell to three minutes where the break went through another sprint which was uncontested, top points taken by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kozontchuk this time.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0474_zps97930d9a.jpg

Hitting the final climb the pace is upped by the controlling Swedish squad but the gap still stands at 3’20”, and that will be a hard gap to close in the next 15 kilometers.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0475_zpsb775f31e.jpg

Unsurprisingly the attacks are soon to start, the first one coming from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy (19th @ 2’50”) who has had a poor tour so far. That looks like it could be rectified however, as a gap of a minute is quickly pulled out over an unorganized peloton.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0478_zps02558cf2.jpg

That is followed by another flurry of attacks from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Shimizu, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Ghisalberti, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Der and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Delgado. They all temporarily pull out 20” but are pulled back by Swedbank, with the exception of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Shimizu who continues to chase i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0483_zps4379ae9f.jpg

Back at the very front all five attackers are still there as the group go under 10 kilometers to go. Their gap has been cut significantly but there is still some hope as the climb flattens out for a few of these last ten kilometers which could cut the time gains from behind.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0486_zps6e6d18ad.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy can see the front group though, and has a 1’20” advantage over the bunch which is starting to shed riders. The Ukranian could be looking at a stage win if he can surpass the leading group.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0487_zpsafe98a47.jpg

Back in the peloton things have started to become frustrating as Swedbank has run out of riders so the chase has come to a halt. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Lofkvist doesn’t want to give his lead away to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy and his ever increasing advantage and attacks, followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0493_zps578078fc.jpg

However that backfires as the Estonian flies past him and up the road. As the Bouygues leader is only 16” back in the overall standings this looks dangerous as he rides through the gap to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Shimizu.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0496_zps70a8f08f.jpg

Back in the pack another group has gone off the front, containing overall heavyweights i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Kashechkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Karpets, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Popovych. That has left i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Alarcon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Caruso and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Dekker stranded back in the pack.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0499_zpsde42cd1c.jpg

The group at the front has split now, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Perez Sanchez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento breaking from the other three, who have now been joined by Ratiy. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae is also approaching so the two out the front will do well to hold on.

A look at the current situation on the road:

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0502_zpsb5446a4c.jpg

With just 3000m left, the two men can sense victory. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy is still pulling hard behind them, but is struggling to close the final few meters.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0505_zps96a9ff74.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Lofkvist breaks from his Japanese counterpart and sets off in pursuit of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae, who has made the junction to the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy group. The Swede needs to keep the gap within 5” when he crosses the line, discounting bonus seconds.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0507_zps0e9e33d0.jpg

Meanwhile, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Perez Sanchez have reached the last kilometer and will sprint for the victory!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0508_zpsd4cea0f6.jpg

As the sprint begins i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Lofkvist has almost caught i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae as he desperately tries to claw back the last few meters.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0509_zps13024b7b.jpg

The front two are into the last 400m, and the Spaniard has taken the lead…

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0511_zps265d64b5.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Perez Sanchez takes the win, and along with it takes a commanding lead in the King of the Mountains classification here in Romania! He continues Iberia’s great form this season, which contrasts with the fortunes of Evian, who will be happy with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sarmiento’s second place.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0513_zps484fa69c.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Ratiy claims third ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae. The clock starts on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.png Lofkvist, and it quickly becomes apparent that the 20” gap will lead to him losing the leaders jersey.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0516_zpsc1a7bf5f.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Alarcon then leads home a big group of favourites in sixth, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kozontchuk, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Vorganov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Dekker and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Caruso rounding off the top 10. They finish 1’06” behind the winner. All of the big favourites are there, preventing a major GC shuffle overnight.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/PCM0518_zps7dda4925.jpg

There is one big change though: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae takes the leaders jersey! The Estonian will enjoy tonight knowing that if he endures a hilly stage tomorrow without any problems he will win the race.
