Vuelta a Burgos - Stage 4
SportingNonsense
The final stage before the key mountain stage is hilly rated. This means it just has an uphill finish though - there isnt a huge amount of challenging terrain beforehand.

Early on, Repsol's Vasquez went out on his own and won the first intermediate sprint.

He did not make it to into the 6 man breakaway though, instead it was:

You would have expected Zabel to win both intermediate sprints - infact Beltran beat him on both occasions. It does give Zabel a provisional lead in the U25 competition though, regardless.

The break did not stand much chance today though, and were caught with about 20km to go. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Soler decided to use this capture as a launchpad for a long range attack.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/vab4-3.jpg

He opens up a 30 second lead on 3 chasers: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Gil, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Bosisio and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Salerno.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/vab4-4.jpg

The peloton are a further minute behind the chasers ... already. And are showing absolutely no urgency.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/vab4-5.jpg

The gap flies up. At 10km to go, Soler now has 3 and a half minutes on the peloton! He is still holding a 40 second lead on Gil, Bosisio and Salerno too.

But those 3 are working well together, and are bringing him back.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/vab4-6.jpg

The stage is certain to go to one of these riders, but could the GC too? Salerno aside, they can all climb well.

Vueling have belatedly realised the danger and are reducing the gap a little.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/vab4-7.jpg

Soler's big solo effort comes to an end with just 1 kilometre to go, who will win the stage now?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/vab4-8.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Salerno is the man who takes the lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/vab4-9.jpg

The Italian takes a much needed win for his Cisco squad!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/vab4-10.jpg

9 seconds later Gil beats Bosisio for 2nd, whiler Soler fell back to a 31 second deficit.

Eventually the peloton arrive - led by Kolobnev and Dekker. They have bizarrely conceded 3 minutes, setting up a fascinating race finale on the final stage.
