Tour of Hellas - Stage 1
roturn
img543.imageshack.us/img543/1301/25e1.jpg

Here`s the opener in Greece. It`s a flat rated stage but with 3 serious climbs. And as the last one is not far from the finish, we could see an interesting finish as some sprinters might lack the strength to come over the hill.

Favourite not only due to his sprint skills, but also due to his climbing skills must be Allan Davis. But if he struggles on the hills as well it could also be a stage for the breakaway or a brave late attack.

img837.imageshack.us/img837/1497/i86v.jpg

Only 3 riders in the breakaway. Unsurprisingly no team with a top favourite for the GC even though CSC`s Anton could probably be counted to the better outside favourites.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Olivier
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Zaballa
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Rollin

img600.imageshack.us/img600/5949/vd8e.jpg

Early on we have a mix of the sprinter and GC teams to control the gap.
Vueling (Dekker), Bouygues (Taaramae), Hollister (Davis/Kiserlovski) and Repsol (Ferrari).
In especially Vueling is showing presence with a lot of riders at the front. So Dekker must be very motivated to win the race here it seems.

img5.imageshack.us/img5/9720/bzse.jpg

First KoM and without any attacks Rollin takes the 5 points ahead of Olivier (3 points) and Zaballa (1 point).
It`s the lowest category here with two cat.3 to follow.

img856.imageshack.us/img856/7370/hqm2.jpg

The next KoM is following soon. And again no rider shows any interest and we have the same order again. Only difference is that it`s 6-4-2 points this time.
So Rollin with a huge step towards the KoM jersey.

img820.imageshack.us/img820/5208/9ol8.jpg

Vespa (for Pozzovivo) and a bit behind also ING (for Gomez Marchante) joined the chasing teams with a bit more than 100km to go. The maximum gap of ~8min has been reached and now it`s melting again.

img266.imageshack.us/img266/5538/u0fx.jpg

We make a bigger jump to the last hill. 6,5km to the top and 32km left to the finish. The higher slopes have been reached now and young Dutch stage racer prospect Olivier is leading the group with a 2'25min gap to the peloton, which is still on the lower slopes.

img200.imageshack.us/img200/9804/ehuq.jpg

Hollister as only sprinter team is left at the front and is doing most of the work now. Shorter chases are done by Vueling, Bouygues and Vespa, all obviously for their GC riders.

img845.imageshack.us/img845/4613/bwy4.jpg

Hollister must take care as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis is in the 2nd half of the peloton and any gap would probably destroy his chances to win the stage.
Even further behind and actually in the last 5 spots of the peloton we see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Ferrari. The Italian sprinter riding for Repsol - Cativen belongs to the best sprinters here but surely lacks the climbing skills of Davis.

img833.imageshack.us/img833/65/z8l6.jpg

And there is a small gap ahead of Ferrari. Still he is not giving up and tries to keep contact.
4 riders though have lost contact and the most notable is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Matzka.

img593.imageshack.us/img593/9651/6ym7.jpg

Last KoM and the breakaway still makes it over the top. But even though the KoM jersey can be taken today, we see no attacks yet again.
Olivier is taking it ahead of Zaballa and Rollin. So the Canadian has lost a huge chance here as the young Dutch equals with him now and both sit in 1st with 13 points with Zaballa having 7.
So the better stage result will deliver tomorrows KoM jersey.

img34.imageshack.us/img34/9557/61kb.jpg

25km left and still 1'54 for the trio. Will they surprise the peloton today?
Surely the sprinter teams had to reduce the pace a bit for their leaders, which helped them a lot.

img34.imageshack.us/img34/9557/61kb.jpg

But with 7,3km the group is caught.
As soon as the sprinters including Ferrari btw. came over the top, the pace was highered again.

img819.imageshack.us/img819/2294/qbmw.jpg

Hollister as only team is forming a team. More or less as Kiserlovski just did a 200m turn with Marentes being the last leadout for Davis.
Brea, who normally is taking this job lost Marente`s wheel 1km ago and can`t help his leader now.

img542.imageshack.us/img542/9550/zxrr.jpg

2,5km left and Marentes is already starting the sprint. He is not known as a very good leadout, so not ideal for Davis.
Just behind him it`s Bazajev and Van Heerden.
Also Soupe, Mironov, Keukeleire, Vasyluk, Bole, Sohrabi, Pichot and Modolo in this line and this order.

So all other sprinters incl. Ferrari haven`t made it to the front rows after the hill.

img21.imageshack.us/img21/5224/wqj1.jpg

1,6km and Bazajev goes early as Marentes surely isn`t fast enough for him. Also Soupe thinks the same, while Davis and the others are still waiting.

img69.imageshack.us/img69/7851/d70h.jpg

Out of nowhere Bole is coming fast on the right. A good sign for Sohrabi, Modolo and Davis to start the sprint as well.
Bazajev can`t follow as he started the sprint too early. Also Soupe has lost contact so does Van Heerden, who had the perfect wheel but suffered after Davis` acceleration.

img708.imageshack.us/img708/4789/jmid.jpg

Sohrabi can`t follow and it`s Davis now coming strong from behind.
Tinkoff with Kolesnikov shows that the hills had a huge impact on many sprinters.

img32.imageshack.us/img32/1586/nbuw.jpg

What a close finish. All 3 are on one line and rode a long time in the wind already. So who has the most energy left?

img6.imageshack.us/img6/1376/xrdr.jpg

It`s Allan Davis. Great win for him. He smartly waited until the right moment to start his sprint.
Modolo with a good 2nd as best of the rest with Bole following in 3rd.

Kolesnikov and Kunshin complete the top5 and a great result for Tinkoff again. Also Dekker`s 6th is showing some good form already.
Sohrabi, Popov, Levarlet and Efimkin.

KoM wise Olivier will get the jersey as he finished a feww places ahead of -Rollin.
