The Tour Down Under has started and todays terrain is looking promising for the sprinters. The crowd obviously wants one of their home sprinters to take the win and with Davis and Docker the chances are actually pretty well. Obviously the opponents around Haussler won`t give this stage away that easily.
The race wasn`t even lasting 1min and the first riders already attack.
Teunissen (UPC)
Mundle (Sauber)
and Zingle (Bpost) try it with this very early move.
They are joined by Zaballa (CSC) and Petit (Evian) but the peloton isn`t slowing down and we see an incredibly fast first hour.
Responsible for this high pace are the three biggest sprinter teams. Sram for Haussler, airBaltic for Docker and obviously also Hollister for last years winner Davis.
Just when it comes to the hillier terrain we have the first puncture. It`s Hollister`s 2nd leader and GC-man Betancourt. Will the pace drop now to give him chances to join the pack again? Or will we see the high pace to continue?
Immediately Selander goes back to support his leader. He won`t have more support on his way back as the other riders stay with Davis for the sprint. Plus Proni as possible GC backup.
The group is caught again as the pace stayed high. Betancourt is still a bit behind but fighting. HTC`s hot prospect Van der Lijke with the next attack and we are already ~40km into the race.
Again 5 riders are forming the new breakaway.
Van der Lijke (HTC)
Hugentobler (Sauber)
Ortega (Jap-Kor)
Merino Criado (CSC)
Vichot (Vueling)
This time the peloton allowed them to ride away which also led to the successful comeback by Betancourt, who is finally back in the pack.
The picture totally changed behind now. The sprinter teams stopped the pace and so it was time for some GC teams to work. First to mention is Cisco Cycling with top favourite Efimkin. As their only "sprinter" is working in Vesely it`s quite obvious what focus they have in this race and also in the whole season. Second team is a bit surprising. CT team Adira - Isq Project wants to show their quality and works for German champion Mehr-Wenige.
The first sprint is reached and Van der Lijke already shows his quality. He wins ahead of Ortega and Vichot.
Also the first and only mountain sprint was challenged a lot. In the end Vichot wins the uphill sprint ahead of Van der Lijke and Hugentobler. This means that we have the first KoM leader of the season.
With 63km to go they still have a 4'50 gap. The teams behind really need to work now.
But still 95% of the work is on Cisco`s and Adira`s shoulders. Jaguar, Sram, Hollister or airBaltic only do very short terms if at all. More or less they just stay in 6th-10th position behind the working teams.
Next sprint and this time Vichot wins ahead of Van der Lijke and Ortega. No bonus seconds for the other two today.
With 32km to go it`s only Cisco doing the work. No support by the sprinter teams and Cisco surely isn`t happy with all the other teams.
Still they know that the group is far too dangerous and so they continue to pull. Only 1'40 left for the group.
The last uphill part really breaks the group`s neck. One rider after the other falls back and is caught by the peloton. Last men standing are Van der Lijke and Vichot. But the peloton is quickly coming closer and will secure a sprint today.
The sprint trains start to be formed. We see a strong team by Sram for Haussler and also one by airBaltic with the Australian champion Docker at the end of their row while Davis has no own train and needs to hang behind Haussler, which isn`t too bad neither.
Keisse McLay Wegmann Briggs Haussler Docker Borrajo Gavazzi Davis Sutton Haidar Anuawar Peeters Manan
Kreder, Arashiro, Teruel, Van Loocke, Hutarovych, Rasmussen etc. all missed the right moment to join the sprint preparations and are not in the best position as they need to go the long way.
Haussler still got the advantage of two riders ahead of him while Briggs already started the sprint as Docker`s final lead-out with 2,7km to go.
Docker tries to somehow hang onto the Sram train when Wegmann overtakes from Keisse. Meanwhile Brea comes on the left with a long sprint while Borrajo tries the same on the right side.
Wegmann perfectly leads out his teammate. Davis decided to hang onto Brea`s wheel and goes to the left with Gavazzi doing his move in the middle. Docker still behind Haussler waiting for the Germans acceleration.
There it comes and Docker can`t follow. But Gavazzi still has the lead after his earlier move. Also Davis is coming fast on the left with another Australian behind him in Sutton. Arashiro and Bole with a solid performance today coming next after finding a gap somewhere.
But Gavazzi`s early move payed off for him today. This was a nice tactical sprint by him and he wins todays stage a bit surprising ahead of Haussler. Next the three Aussies in the order Davis, Docker, Sutton.
A bit disappointing probably for Oz, as they couldn`t put a stamp on todays stage and also for Pivovarna as they had the sprint quality to position someone a bit better but all of them decided to go on their own instead of working together.
We are back tomorrow with the 2nd stage, which could already be a good chance for the GC guys to shine.
