The Avila Classic brings back the cobbles to the PCT calendar. 246km length, lots of hills and cobbles will make it a very hard race.
Comparing with the 2013 result, the top4 are all here and belong to the best favourites.
Last years winner Breschel has always be named in those kind of races. The Amex rider is one of the best when combining length, cobbles and sprint. So the defending champion is the one to beat. In especially as his teammate Eisel makes it so difficult for the other teams to control.
With some strong PCT cobblers not here, the best cobbler though is Franzoi for Team Hornbach. And while he might not have the best sprint, the team surely goes the double lead with Veelers, who was 4th last year coming back to improve.
Then we have Steegmans, 3rd in 2013 and just like the Amex duo he combines the strength on the cobbles with a fast kick in the end of the stage. So surely a rider that is a potential winner here.
2nd last year and still a decent cobbler was Coyot. That said he is already regressing and is no longer one of the best here. So a win by him would really be a small surprise.
Coming back to the stronger cobblers here we must name Vanbilsen and
Ostergaard, who both lack the sprint but are strong on the cobbles. So watch out for those. Also Takenouchi must be named here for CT team ASDA.
Being weaker cobblers but having a nice sprint the following riders also belong to the favourites:
Ventoso
Nepomnyachsniy
Both are expected to like this race a lot and should be seen in front as well.
A bit unclear the strength of top sprinters Cavendish and Vantomme, who both have shown decent results in cobbled races already but need a big group sprinting for the win.
The same counts for the remaining teams, who don`t really have a cobbler but hope for a sprint finish.

I do not know why I went into this race. Cobles is not a very good word for my team so do not expect anything of this race will be a total disgrace.

Big race for AMEXpc as this is our win goal. Some of the top cobblers are in France and that should give us the advantages. With three cobble race victories so far in 2014, the odds are against us, but we have a solid squad here to support Eisel (2-wins) and Breschel (1-win).

Goss for the win!
Can't believe I really missed that cobbles when planning our season.... We actually do have two or three guys, who can ride cobbles... but you won't find them here

Well if this turns out like Le Samyn in the regular game, don't count it off just yet.

That's my desperate hopes, yes We've seen less selective cobbled races before. Or maybe a breakaway appearance will do. Well, at least the pressure is off our shoulders that way

I think next season we'll be going cob-less. Infuriating this year to say the least.
Thx for the report, this is just amazing pace you are setting. Absolutely amazing.

I could have done far worse than 4th and 12th in a C1 race. So I'll take it. Judging by the 4 Carlsberg guys in the group at the end though, a dig couldn't have hurt.

This.
Crap race for Oz and obviously some much more promising teams as well. A breakaway was all we should have went for
Too bad we didn't

Thanks guys.
But you mustn`t forget the others! SykkelFreak is doing an awesome job right now with the stage races, while I have not claimed those in future.
SN doing the long Giro and so on.
For this race it was at least all teams (more or less) who were expected to score nicely, were in the end scoring. That is without Quickstep though... |

Haha, awesome to see Kenny win this!
5th and 9th is a decent result I guess. But had the peloton not let this break go, we would've had a big chance of getting Steegmans on the podium. So mixed feelings.
Nice points for Amex, congrats. And to the winner Ste of course!
