After yesterday’s prologue, today we hit the road with a big mountain stage. The favourites for today are the big GC contenders in the form of Taaramae, Dekker and Alarcon.
The first few attacks are all pulled back, and as we reach the early King of the Mountains point, no break has been established. Currently Chacon is leading an attack, and he is on the front as we pass the point. Teammate Perez Sanchez is behind him to take second, while Tiernan-Locke takes third.
That group is eventually brought back as well. Finally a group of four is let go, containing Taciak, Perez Sanchez, Delgado and Bazkhou. As they reach the first intermediate sprint, the gap is 2'15". Taciak takes the points ahead of Bazkhou and Delgado.
Brutt then bridges across, making the group 5-strong. The gap is allowed to grow even more, so this looks to be the finalised breakaway.
As they get to the next Mountain sprint, it becomes apparent that Perez Sanchez is targeting the polkadot jersey. He comfortably takes first in front of Brutt and Delgado.
The last sprint for 100km could be the breaks last, so they all look to make the most of it. Bazkhou takes the spoils this time, before Brutt and Taciak.
With 50kms to the finish the gap has started to be pulled back by Pivovarna, CSC, Evian and Bouygues. It had gone up to 6'35", but it is back down to 3'25".
Around 15kms later, the break's gap is below 2 mins. Sensing an opportunity before the final climb, five riders attack. They can all climb decently; the names are Mestre, Ruijgh, Der, Soler and Eltink. It remains to be seen however if they can establish a sizeable gap.
Unsurprisingly though, they are reeled in by the pack. Back at the front of the race the breakaway still has a 1'05" lead as they pass through another mountain sprint and then an intermediate sprint. Perez Sanchez once again wins the mountain sprint while Taciak takes the intermediate sprint.
As we hit the foot of the final climb though, they are caught. The final climb has a steep section in the middle, with the start and end around 3%. 19kms are left when the first move is made by Popovych.
He is quickly pulled back by Bintang, who won't want to let big overall contenders slip away. Undeterred by Popovych's fate, Serpa is the next to try an attack.
But the outcome is the same, this time Bouygues pulling him back. Once more, as soon as he is caught an opportunity is seen. This time it is Ratiy, followed by Devolder and Kashechkin who make a move as we hit the steep section.
Once more, the attacks fail. Lofkvist and Ji go this time under the 10kms to go banner, but in all likely hood they are wasting their energy.
They do hang on a bit off the front though, enough for the chase to split the pack. It is very sudden, and nothing can be done to avoid it if you are badly positions. That turns out to be the fate of Dekker, who has been caught napping!
While Vueling try and scramble a chase together, we return to the front. The duo of attackers is holding a small lead, but nothing dangerous yet. The 20 men who chase them are setting a good pace.
That high pace then causes another high profile casualty: race leader Abal! Ji and Lofkvist have been caught by the remaining riders at the front. Here is a look at the gaps at the moment:
35" 1'05" 2'01" > 18" > 17" > 30" > 56" Ji Kolesnikov RuijghGr. Ratiy Gr. Dekker Lofkvist Devolder Der7 riders 26 riders Caruso Abal Taaramae Serpa Alarcon Soler Bibby Shimizu Karpets Kunshin Popovych Popkov Kashechkin
With 5kms to go, the road's gradient had eased a bit. With everyone watching each other, Caruso puts in a big acceleration!
Just 2000m remain and the Italian has a gap, but Taaramae is chasing hard. Can he hold on?
Under the flammage rouge, he has launched his sprint. Behind Taaramae, Lofkvist and Kashechkin have opened up a small gap to the other five riders in the chase, as they all look to overhaul the Italian.
Also, Dekker has attacked away from his teammates and has caught Abal, about 1'30" back. He looks to be cutting his losses.
Entering the final 200m Caruso looks to have tired. Kashechkin and Lofkvist have moved up alongside him as the road kicks up to a 10% gradient.
But Caruso finds some energy to accelerate away! What a stunning win for the Italian, which puts him into the Yellow Jersey. His team will be happy for sure.
Kashechkin squeezes out Lofkvist for second, while Taaramae takes fourth. Bibby completes the top 5, and all 9 riders in the front group are given the same time.
1'29" later, Dekker leads home Abal. Those two were the two big casualties today, as they lose their first and third overall.
