This race has had its fair share of incredibly hard days but this one takes the cake. There are 5 major climbs on offer today:
Col du Galibier (Lautaret side) – 36km @ 5.2%
Col de la Croix de Fer – 30km @ 5.1%
Col de la Madeleine – 19.7km @ 7.7%
Col du Pradier – 13.7km @ 7.0%
La Plagne – 22.1km @ 6.4%
There is a total of 118 mountain points on offer today for the maximum at each of the categorised climbs (the Lautaret is considered category 1 and the descent goes via the category 3 Col du Telegraphe). With this in mind Mauro Facci is the first one to attack.
Other attacking riders are:
Christophe Riblon
Kristjan Koren (20 mountain points)
Remberto Jaramillo
Jaroslav Kulhavy (8 mountain points)
Claudio Corioni
Andrei Grivko
Ricardo Van der Velde (46 mountain points)
Matthieu Sprick (6 mountain points)
Mikhail Ignatiev (60 mountain points)
Mohammed Mat Senan
Thomas Vedel Kvist
Jocelin Maillet (14 mountain points)
Carlos Oyarzun (12 mountain points)
Jacob Fiedler
And in fact all of these riders are allowed to escape in one big group, so for the second day in a row we have an abnormally large break.
The Lautaret is the first climb up. Ignatiev has the most mountain points of anyone in the group so he attacks away for the 16 on offer. Van der Velde rolls over with 12 behind him and then Sprick follows for the 10.
It is a similar story as we get to the top of the Col du Galibier, the highest point of the race this year. Ignatiev attacks away and takes the 20 points while Van der Velde leads the rest over with Kulhavy this time taking third.
The descent down the more commonly used side of the Galibier now follows. Along the way we have the small Col du Telegraphe to contend with. It is certainly much less threatening from this side. This time, however, there is a change in the script as Van der Velde attacks for the 6 points and beats Ignatiev to the line. Could this be a changing of the guard? It certainly makes the mountain jersey competition much more interesting. Grivko takes the two remaining points. The gap is out to 8’45”.
Back in the bunch it is mostly Veloso and Erviti who are working and once again no one is looking to help Santander.
The riders go over the Col de la Croix de Fer next. It is a long climb but there is a chance to rest in the middle on a brief descent so it doesn’t cause too many difficulties. Van der Velde attacks away once again and wins the climb ahead of Ignatiev. Maillet takes third place.
In a day of tough climbs it is the next one which is easily the hardest on paper – the Col de la Madeleine. In addition to its length of 19.7km it has an average of 7.7% and goes over 10% a few times. The gap is over the 15 minute mark as the climb starts.
Fiedler and Corioni are dropped by the break during this climb and to be honest they have done well to last this long.
Back in the pack Santander increase the pace and reduce the bunch to about 80 riders. Rienda Segura takes up the pace and he is really pushing it.
At the top Van der Velde attacks for the 20 points on offer. Maillet is in second with Sprick in third. But where is Ignatiev? He has blown completely and he is dropped along with Kvist. This means that the Russian gets no points and so the Dutchman can overtake him and will likely be wearing the mountain jersey tonight!
There is a 13 minute gap over the top and the bunch has been further reduced to 53 riders now with 80km remaining. The gap is in fact reduced to 11’20” as the Col du Pradier starts and at this point even Tenorio is helping with the pacing.
Not much happens on the Col du Pradier but no one attacks for the points up front. Kulhavy rolls over first ahead of Maillet then Sprick and finally Van der Velde, who is really looking tired after his efforts today.
These four riders are part of a new group of only eight riders which succeeds in dropping the rest of the former breakaway. The other four are:
Mat Senan
Koren
Facci
Grivko
The gap has now been reduced to just under 6 minutes and this increased pace is also reflected in the size of the peloton, which is reduced to just 32 riders:
Madrazo, Tenorio, Lopez Garcia, Valls
Cunego, Lloret, Cobo
Intxausti, Terciado, Navarro
Schleck, Medvedev, Samwel
Kohl, Faiers
Abal, Anton
Sicard, Kangert
Pluchkin, Guldhammer
Henao, Nepomnyachsniy
Duarte, Brambilla
Amador
Brajkovic
Velits
Pedraza
Costagli
Augustyn
Sorensen
La Plagne is the final climb of the day. It is 22.1km long with an average of 6.6% and lots of short ramps with quite difficult sections. At the base Sprick and Maillet attack away.
This drops most of the group but Kulhavy and Van der Velde manage to come back. This is clearly the last straw for Van der Velde, however, as he is dropped when these two attack once again soon afterwards. Kulhavy once again claws his way back so we have a lead group of just three.
Abal, perhaps inspired by the attacking up front, decides to light the touch paper and kick off the attacks from the peloton. Augustyn, the constant attack, follows him.
Tenorio is right on the case, however, and is clearly interested in just maintaining a steady pace, so he chases them down. This doesn’t completely discourage all the attacks, however, as Costagli now launches his attack. Anton follows with him.
Tenorio increases the pace once again and not only are those two attackers caught but in fact the entire break is caught as well. Now the fight is really on for the stage win. There are only 21 riders left in the peloton.
Madrazo now hits the front himself. This causes Velits and Faiers to be dropped. In fact with 6.2km remaining the bunch is down to 14:
Madrazo, Tenorio
Schleck, Samwel
Cunego
Henao
Amador
Brajkovic
Intxausti
Pedraza
Sicard
Kohl
Pluchkin
Abal
Henao has had a terrible race by anyone’s definition thanks to a high-profile crash early on. But now he shows how far he has come by launching a bid for stage glory.
Schleck decides to follow this attack but Madrazo controls both of them. This has the effect of dropping Samwel, the last of the domestiques left in the bunch.
Henao is not wholly deterred, however, as he attacks once again. This time Abal is the victim of his acceleration and he falls off the back.
This attack gets a gap over the favourites group. Seeing this Schleck decides to attack as well. He goes right past Henao. Madrazo, Cunego, Pluchkin and Amador all follow after the man from Luxembourg. This is a really dangerous group for some riders behind who could have GC positions at risk.
Intxausti and Brajkovic form a chasing duo right behind them. Henao joins them briefly but he slips backwards.
Amador leads the group of five under the 1km to go kite with Pluchkin on his wheel. Will we see any gaps form on this final slope?
Madrazo looks strong in the sprint and comes up to Amador’s shoulder.
Cunego has a strong kick but starting at the back has clearly harmed him. The others line up along the road to the left of Madrazo, who starts to look good.
And just like that Angel Madrazo takes the stage win! He lost some time yesterday but reasserted his right to win this race today.
Pluchkin came so close to the mountain stage win which would have made amends. Schleck takes the final podium place, looking good after his stage win yesterday. Amador has yet another strong mountain showing in fourth and finally Cunego is in fifth. The time bonuses mean that the gap between the top two once again extends beyond a minute.
18 seconds later Intxausti leads Brajkovic over. This means that Brajkovic overtakes Sicard on GC but he is only 2 seconds ahead of Amador.
47 seconds down on the stage winners Henao comes in, leading home a group that also includes Tenorio, Sicard and Kohl.
The second day in the Alps has proven eventful, even if we didn’t get the expected sorting out. It is interesting to see that only 9 seconds separate 6th and 8th on GC. Speaking of time gaps Cunego needs to find some way to make back 1’16” tomorrow if he wants to win this Tour.
Madrazo takes over the points competition thanks to his stage win today. Cunego needs 11 more points to take the jersey back so he really needs a strong stage result tomorrow. It is all to play for. Van der Velde will wear the mountain jersey tonight thanks to his clever choice to save himself a bit earlier in the day.
