Tour de France - Stage 19
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-1.jpg

This race has had its fair share of incredibly hard days but this one takes the cake. There are 5 major climbs on offer today:
Col du Galibier (Lautaret side) – 36km @ 5.2%
Col de la Croix de Fer – 30km @ 5.1%
Col de la Madeleine – 19.7km @ 7.7%
Col du Pradier – 13.7km @ 7.0%
La Plagne – 22.1km @ 6.4%

There is a total of 118 mountain points on offer today for the maximum at each of the categorised climbs (the Lautaret is considered category 1 and the descent goes via the category 3 Col du Telegraphe). With this in mind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Mauro Facci is the first one to attack.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-2.jpg

Other attacking riders are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Christophe Riblon
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Kristjan Koren (20 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Remberto Jaramillo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Jaroslav Kulhavy (8 mountain points)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Claudio Corioni
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Andrei Grivko
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricardo Van der Velde (46 mountain points)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Matthieu Sprick (6 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Mikhail Ignatiev (60 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Mohammed Mat Senan
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Thomas Vedel Kvist
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Jocelin Maillet (14 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Carlos Oyarzun (12 mountain points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Jacob Fiedler

And in fact all of these riders are allowed to escape in one big group, so for the second day in a row we have an abnormally large break.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-3.jpg

The Lautaret is the first climb up. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev has the most mountain points of anyone in the group so he attacks away for the 16 on offer. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde rolls over with 12 behind him and then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Sprick follows for the 10.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-4.jpg

It is a similar story as we get to the top of the Col du Galibier, the highest point of the race this year. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev attacks away and takes the 20 points while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde leads the rest over with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy this time taking third.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-5.jpg

The descent down the more commonly used side of the Galibier now follows. Along the way we have the small Col du Telegraphe to contend with. It is certainly much less threatening from this side. This time, however, there is a change in the script as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde attacks for the 6 points and beats i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev to the line. Could this be a changing of the guard? It certainly makes the mountain jersey competition much more interesting. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Grivko takes the two remaining points. The gap is out to 8’45”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-6.jpg

Back in the bunch it is mostly i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Veloso and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Erviti who are working and once again no one is looking to help i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Santander.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-7.jpg

The riders go over the Col de la Croix de Fer next. It is a long climb but there is a chance to rest in the middle on a brief descent so it doesn’t cause too many difficulties. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde attacks away once again and wins the climb ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet takes third place.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-8.jpg

In a day of tough climbs it is the next one which is easily the hardest on paper – the Col de la Madeleine. In addition to its length of 19.7km it has an average of 7.7% and goes over 10% a few times. The gap is over the 15 minute mark as the climb starts.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-9.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Fiedler and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Corioni are dropped by the break during this climb and to be honest they have done well to last this long.

Back in the pack i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Santander increase the pace and reduce the bunch to about 80 riders. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Rienda Segura takes up the pace and he is really pushing it.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-10.jpg

At the top i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde attacks for the 20 points on offer. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet is in second with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Sprick in third. But where is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ignatiev? He has blown completely and he is dropped along with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist. This means that the Russian gets no points and so the Dutchman can overtake him and will likely be wearing the mountain jersey tonight!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-11.jpg

There is a 13 minute gap over the top and the bunch has been further reduced to 53 riders now with 80km remaining. The gap is in fact reduced to 11’20” as the Col du Pradier starts and at this point even i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio is helping with the pacing.

Not much happens on the Col du Pradier but no one attacks for the points up front. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy rolls over first ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Sprick and finally i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde, who is really looking tired after his efforts today.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-12.jpg

These four riders are part of a new group of only eight riders which succeeds in dropping the rest of the former breakaway. The other four are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Mat Senan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Koren
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Facci
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Grivko

The gap has now been reduced to just under 6 minutes and this increased pace is also reflected in the size of the peloton, which is reduced to just 32 riders:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo, Tenorio, Lopez Garcia, Valls
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego, Lloret, Cobo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti, Terciado, Navarro
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck, Medvedev, Samwel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kohl, Faiers
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal, Anton
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard, Kangert
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin, Guldhammer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao, Nepomnyachsniy
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte, Brambilla
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Sorensen

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-13.jpg

La Plagne is the final climb of the day. It is 22.1km long with an average of 6.6% and lots of short ramps with quite difficult sections. At the base i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Sprick and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet attack away.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-14.jpg

This drops most of the group but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde manage to come back. This is clearly the last straw for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde, however, as he is dropped when these two attack once again soon afterwards. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy once again claws his way back so we have a lead group of just three.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-15.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal, perhaps inspired by the attacking up front, decides to light the touch paper and kick off the attacks from the peloton. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn, the constant attack, follows him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-16.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio is right on the case, however, and is clearly interested in just maintaining a steady pace, so he chases them down. This doesn’t completely discourage all the attacks, however, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli now launches his attack. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton follows with him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-17.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio increases the pace once again and not only are those two attackers caught but in fact the entire break is caught as well. Now the fight is really on for the stage win. There are only 21 riders left in the peloton.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-18.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo now hits the front himself. This causes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Faiers to be dropped. In fact with 6.2km remaining the bunch is down to 14:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo, Tenorio
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck, Samwel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pedraza
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kohl
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-19.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao has had a terrible race by anyone’s definition thanks to a high-profile crash early on. But now he shows how far he has come by launching a bid for stage glory.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-20.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck decides to follow this attack but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo controls both of them. This has the effect of dropping i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Samwel, the last of the domestiques left in the bunch.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao is not wholly deterred, however, as he attacks once again. This time i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal is the victim of his acceleration and he falls off the back.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-21.jpg

This attack gets a gap over the favourites group. Seeing this i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck decides to attack as well. He goes right past i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador all follow after the man from Luxembourg. This is a really dangerous group for some riders behind who could have GC positions at risk.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic form a chasing duo right behind them. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao joins them briefly but he slips backwards.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-23.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador leads the group of five under the 1km to go kite with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin on his wheel. Will we see any gaps form on this final slope?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-24.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo looks strong in the sprint and comes up to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador’s shoulder.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-25.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego has a strong kick but starting at the back has clearly harmed him. The others line up along the road to the left of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Madrazo, who starts to look good.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-26.jpg

And just like that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Angel Madrazo takes the stage win! He lost some time yesterday but reasserted his right to win this race today.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-27.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Pluchkin came so close to the mountain stage win which would have made amends. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck takes the final podium place, looking good after his stage win yesterday. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador has yet another strong mountain showing in fourth and finally i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego is in fifth. The time bonuses mean that the gap between the top two once again extends beyond a minute.

18 seconds later i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Intxausti leads i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic over. This means that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Brajkovic overtakes i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard on GC but he is only 2 seconds ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Amador.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-28.jpg

47 seconds down on the stage winners i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao comes in, leading home a group that also includes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kohl.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/TDF19-29.jpg

The second day in the Alps has proven eventful, even if we didn’t get the expected sorting out. It is interesting to see that only 9 seconds separate 6th and 8th on GC. Speaking of time gaps i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego needs to find some way to make back 1’16” tomorrow if he wants to win this Tour.

It is all to play for. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Van der Velde will wear the mountain jersey tonight thanks to his clever choice to save himself a bit earlier in the day.
