Flugel is in the lead, but can he retain it in this stage? The circuit is tricky, a steep climb and a dangerous downhill seem to favour Flugel, but Froome, Wegmann, Kirchen et al. also want to win the race.
Lewis (Oz), Meersmann (Puma), Pozzo (Ferrari) and Van Zandbeek (Koppert) attack right at the start of the stage and try to make the BOTD.
Frison (Bpost) and Cooper (Red Bull) attack from the pack a bit later in order to catch the first group. And they would so.
Trilux and Rapha Condor are leading the pack. With 70kms to go, they decide to up the pace which is not good for Capecchi (Ferrari) who fell 2 kms earlier and therefore would never come back to the peloton.
The escapees have a 3 minutes advantage with 30kms to the end.
Last lap! The breakaway riders have two minutes on the pack. Only 13kms to go.
The road rises and Wegmann immediately attacks. He quickly gets a few meters and Froome is now trying to counter.
Froome catches Wegmann and they have the breakaway riders within sight. However, they don't seem within reach.
Flugel is relaying in the peloton in order to retain his yellow jersey. 45 seconds is the difference between the pack and the duo.
In the front, Lewis tries to gain some space to the other escapees in the descent. 6500 meters to the finish.
A smart attack by Lewis in the final kilometers gives him the win! He rode 6500 meters solo and never lost time to the main chasers. Van Zandbeek would be second and Meersman third. Pozzo, Cooper and Frison will arrive some seconds later.
Back in the pack, Bauer, Costa, Kirchen, Criel, Fahnert and Langeveld are now trying to attack at the entrance of the last 1500 meters.
With all these moves, Wegmann and Froome are now only 20 seconds ahead of the pack.
Wegmann and Froome finish ahead of the pack led by Costa. Will this gap be enough for Froome to grab the leadership?
Flugel worked hard to keep the yellow jersey. Those attacks in the end helped to reduce the disadvantage that seems to be more or less 15 seconds, judging by the clock. What will be the decision of the race commission?
