Today brings our first real test in the mountains as we travel 176km from Marvejols to the Col du Minier. The Col du Minier hasn’t been used in the Tour before, given that it is not part of either of the major mountain chains, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t tough. It is a huge 22.5km in length, though that length is balanced out by an average gradient of 4.6%. Almost the entire climb is between 4% and 7%, so it perhaps won’t be selective enough to deal with the biggest names, but we should get yet another shake-up anyway.
There are plenty of other climbs out on course with a maximum of 43 points available before the 16 point Col du Minier. The three middle climbs are short but fairly steep and are likely to tire people out before the finish. We will look at those more closely when we get there. But with all those mountain points on offer we are going to get lots of attacks. Thomas Peterson launches first.
Several others look to join him:
Thomas Vedel Kvist
Mikhail Ignatiev (16th overall)
Jaroslav Kulhavy
Branislav Samoilev
Stef Clement
Ricardo Van der Velde
Koldo Gil
Thibaut Pinot (24th overall)
But as they approach the first summit only three of these riders have a gap over the bunch. Pinot crosses the top and takes the 6 points, with Clement getting the 4 points and Gil taking the 2 points. They have a gap of about 50 seconds over the bunch behind them, which is still unsettled by other attacks.
On the descent down to the second climb of the day three riders bridge up to create a break of six:
Arnold Jeannesson
Ricardo Van der Velde
Amaël Moinard
Team B&O and Pendleton’s sit at the head of affairs marshalling the various other small efforts to get across and this break is allowed to form.
We get to the second climb of the day and it is clear that Pinot is the strongest in the lead group, as he attacks away easily and takes the 10 points on offer. His teammate Bookwalter started the day in the lead with 27 mountain points, so he is already endangering that jersey. Gil is the second rider over this time, taking the 8 ahead of Clement who gets 6. Moinard and Van der Velde mop up the rest of the points. The gap is out to 3’46”.
Now some bad news for one team as Ivan Mauricio Casas crashes out of the race on the descent. Thankfully his main job in the TTT is done, but it will still make it harder for Pendleton’s to control the race.
The race now heads over some fairly flat land with still over 100km remaining. The gap gets out to a maximum of 7’20” but through this section several teams work to control things much more. Those teams aren’t surprising at all – Santander, Lotto and Vesuvio are all clearly looking to gain time on Pluchkin.
This pace isn’t easy for everyone, however, as Sergio Henao takes a tumble. He was sitting 23rd before today’s stage and was looking to gain some time today to make a real strike at the top ten overall. He does stay in the bunch, however, so he may be alright.
Now we have the three toughest intermediate climbs of the day, all in a row. All of them max out at over 10% and are pretty difficult the rest of the time. The Saint Roman is the first of these.
Once again the script is fairly predictable as Pinot barely even breaks a sweat going over the top first to take the 6 points. Gil is in second once again and Clement takes the final two points. Pinot now only needs 6 more points in order to take over as provisional mountain leader. The gap is down to 6’42”.
Back in the bunch, as they cross the summit, there is a big split! Just a touch over 100 riders are dropped and it looks like that includes Henao! He wasn’t well placed at all after his crash and here he sits! But that drama is heightened by news that green jersey wearer Simone Ponzi has crashed! His teammate Marcel Wyss brings him back, but will this affect his ability to sprint on the remaining flat stages?
Milka are leading the chase in the second peloton, which is now 3’10” back. They aren’t getting help from anyone else, obviously, as most of the other teams back here have GC riders further up the road.
The Col d’Asclie is next up, which is shorter and sharper than the previous climb. The gap to the break at the start is 4’32”, with another 1’45” back to Henao... and it looks like his team have brought him back shortly after the road starts to rise!
At the summit Pinot faces his first serious challenge. Gil comes within inches of overhauling him, but falls just short. Clement of course takes the final 2 points. This moves Pinot ahead of Bookwalter in the provisional mountain jersey classification. With 3 climbs still to come the leader board looks like this:
Thibaut Pinot
28
Brent Bookwalter
27
Pieter Ghyllebert
24
Teodoro Costagli
18
Koldo Gil
18
Stef Clement
14
The pace is really high as the gap is down to 4’45” and as further evidence of this speed 28 riders go clear of the bunch! Some of the key riders who have missed the cut are:
Intxausti
Brajkovic
Sicard
Amador
Kohl
Pedraza
Velits
Ratiy
And it seems that Henao is even further back. He could well be injured after his earlier fall.
As we hit the fifth climb, the Geyre Vielle, the gaps are like this:
3’12”
1’08”
1’06”
Break
--->
P1 (28)
--->
P2 (40)
--->
Gr. Henao (13)
However that figure of 28 quickly drops by one more rider as Abal suffers incredibly bad luck and suffers a flat. This results in him being swept up by the second peloton.
This climb is much harder and longer than the others today apart from our finishing climb. As such Clement blows from the break and is swallowed up quickly. This stage was just too tough for him. Thanks to this being much harder Pinot once again has no real trouble. This time Gil can’t take second place but instead he is starting to be dropped with Van der Velde and can only manage fourth. Moinard takes second ahead of Jeannesson.
And it looks like Pinot will continue on his own, as he doesn’t sit up to wait for his former breakaway companions. His gap back to them starts to grow and extends beyond a minute. He has the mountain jersey wrapped up for the day, can he add a stage win to that? Let’s have a look at the gaps behind him:
3’00”
1’22”
2’12”
Pinot
--->
P1 (26)
--->
P2 (38)
--->
Gr. Henao (8)
Pinot leads over the fourth category climb, bringing him to 43 mountain points for the day. Moinard and Gil hold on to mop up the remaining points and then they are brought in by the charging peloton. Let’s have a look at exactly who is in this first peloton:
Madrazo, Tenorio, Valls, Lopez Garcia, Serrano
Cunego, Lloret, Monfort, Duenas
Pluchkin, Guldhammer, Grivko
Schleck, Medvedev, Claerebout
Augustyn, Biziyaremye
Brandt, Jeannesson
Faiers
Costagli
Kangert
Brambilla
Moinard
Gil
Van der Velde
As the final climb starts Pinot has a 1’09” lead over this first peloton and then the second peloton, now down to 26 riders, is another minute back. In there are all the dropped GC riders except of course Henao.
With the climb started some lesser names decide that this is a good opportunity to try to make a name for themselves with an attack. The first raft of attackers is:
Faiers
Guldhammer
Costagli
Kangert
Brambilla
Brandt
This attack is controlled by Lloret, who clearly just wants to set a steady tempo and steadily whittle away the group, while also preventing the 2nd bunch combing back.
This isn’t everyone’s plan as now Augustyn goes on the attack. He has been incredibly active ever since the first hilly stage and is clearly loving his time here in his first Tour since 2010.
This attack only succeeds in catching Pinot and dropping Monfort, however, as Faiers marks it. So with the break out of the way the winner will probably come from this group. Who will it be?
The next rider to lay out a claim for the winner is Costagli, who attacks with 13.5km to the line.
This time Guldhammer comes to the front to do the work of keeping it under control. There are only 22 riders left in this first group and the pace is still high.
That number drops down to 19 as Cunego decides that he will come to the front and take up the pace himself. This could be a key moment in determining who will be able to stay with the pace.
The defending champion just keeps working for a few kilometres and suddenly we get a serious rupture – 11 riders are left at the head of affairs! Let’s see who made it:
Former leader Faiers is perhaps the biggest surprise here and the adrenaline might be getting to him as he launches an attack.
The cameras flick behind for a second as it seems that Intxausti is on the attack, desperately trying to bridge up to the group of favourites. He attacks past those who were dropped from this front group.
And the Spaniard manages it – he powers into the lead group. As he gets up to the front we get a time check to a group of 7 behind him. This group is 44” behind the favourites:
Abal
Amador
Brajkovic
Sicard
Kohl
Pedraza
Velits
Abal is doing a lot of the work here and clearly wants to make up for the flat tire he suffered earlier. But up front still more excitement as we get a trio of attackers:
Intxausti
Schleck
Madrazo
That is a huge effort from Intxausti, who just got here and must surely be hurting. Regardless, this is a very dangerous group. They go past Faiers and continue on. Cunego is still working back in the bunch. Not only that but the group of Abal has rejoined. There is still 4km of climbing remaining here.
Only 500 metres later Cunego has reduced the gap to almost nothing. Seeing this Schleck decides to set off solo. He has the most time to gain of all the big names here and if this attack sticks it would be tremendously helpful.
Now it becomes a battle of who can grind it out. With 2km remaining Schleck has 19 seconds over the other favourites, while Cunego does all the work to shut him down. The others clearly see him as the biggest favourite for the race. Faiers is dropped from the bunch, unfortunately, and so too is Guldhammer. It is pretty much just GC contenders left here.
And under the kite the gap is still at 16 seconds. This could be a magnificent result for the rider from Luxembourg. Cunego is clearly worried and still powers on.
And with 500 to go Pluchkin and Amador come around Cunego. They have been conserving their strength but can they catch Schleck?
With 300 metres to go it is tight – Schleck is giving it everything he has...
But Aleksandr Pluchkin comes around and takes his fourth career Tour de France stage as well as the 20 bonus seconds on offer!
Amador comes through in second place, which is a great climb from him. Schleck takes third and will have to be content with only 8 bonus seconds. Madrazo and Tenorio are fourth and fifth, climbing well as a team. Cunego, after all his hard work, can only manage sixth. Sicard is a quiet seventh ahead of Kohl and Brajkovic. Lopez Garciz then makes it three Santander riders in the top ten. Intxausti, Valls, Velits, Pedraza and Abal all finish in this group as well. Faiers loses 1’24” today and he is the only rider in the top 15 not to finish in the front group.
Henao lost 14’44” today, coming through surrounded by his teammates. There isn’t much change in terms of GC as all of the favourites finished together. Pinot takes over the mountain jersey, with a 16 point lead over Bookwalter. Ponzi remains in green though his crash may make things interesting. Madrazo keeps his 1 second lead over Tenorio in the young rider jersey competition and finally Santander emphatically take over the team competition.
