Clasica a Quetzaltenango - Stage 1
Mresuperstar

The longest stage of the tour is on day 1 but it's still just 107.5kms. The stage starts with a small circuit around Salcaja before heading up Cumbre de Alaska. It's over 15kms long but averages a steady gradient of 4.5% making it the easiest climb we will see over the next three days.

The favourites are none other than the best 3 climbers in the division
facing off against each other for the first time this season -

We are already 30kms in and it looks like we have finally have a solid breakaway after Vueling Airlines and Bouygues Telecom pulled numerous attempts back as they were too many riders for their liking. Teams that were present in those attempts that didn't make the current breakaway were HTC, CSC, Oz, ING, Cisco, and Prio. Everybody wanted in but only 4 did.

The sprint points don't mean much in a race like this except for few extra dollars to do some shopping after the stage so the Canadian i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Meier will come home with some nice Guatemalan souvenirs.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/3_zpsbaf070e2.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Broco takes the 2nd sprint. 34kms to go, 2'40" advantage over the peloton
lead by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Vueling Airlines and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Bouygues Telecom.

Huge move with 22kms to go right before the start of the climb. Attacks by -

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton

The breakaway is two minutes up the road.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/5_zps01ab8188.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Bouygues Telecom is all over it and isn't going to let that go clear.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/6_zps22c5e5bd.jpg

Another move by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Nazaret triggers i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton again along with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano. The climb is still ahead.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/7_zps620e0db5.jpg

As that move fails as well we have finally reach the climb.

So that just means more attacks!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Soler

The breakaway is now in sight as well.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/8_zps25679bb1.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano reach the breakaway while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Lloyd joins
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Efimkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Soler in group two. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Bouygues Telecom is still leading the peloton up the climb.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/9_zps66c1815b.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Broco are now your leaders as they ride away from
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo and the rest of the breakaway. 9kms still to go however.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/10_zpsa481f33d.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Chernetskiy gets shuffled from the breakaway back to peloton. The second group is still out in front of the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Bouygues Telecom chase which still has 76 riders in the peloton. Down to 7.5kms to go. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano is starting to look really dangerous.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/11_zps88a5b83e.jpg

5kms to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano can look back and only see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo. Race radio is saying the gap is around 1'30" to the chase group and 2'00" to the peloton.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/12_zps5deff3cb.jpg

5kms to go for the peloton now and you can't say i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Dekker and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae don't have any support. All their helpers are pulling hard but can't seem to close the gap. They now have their sights on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Meier and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Kastrantas slipping back after being in the breakaway all day.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/13_zps1514b3ab.jpg

We have reached the snow. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo is closing in on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Broco is third on the road being chased down by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Lloyd, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Efimkin, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Soler. Then it's the peloton where all the favourites should be getting ready for an attack anytime now.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/14_zps2ce01074.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano is now at the banner! The favourites in the peloton have yet to attack. Has old veteran pulled off a stunning victory?

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/15_zpsfaae78a5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo can see the man to beat but both are too tired to sprint.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/16_zps5ddc3d0d.jpg

While it's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton leading the chase group under the banner for what looks like the battle for third. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Broco is just hanging on to this group.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/17_zpse87a260f.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taatamae finally realizes his teammates aren't closing down the gap as fast as he wants so he attacks/sprints after the chase group, but it's too late to catch this guy...

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/18_zps093b7f57.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Carlos Castano with a huge win! He attacked at the right moment and fought every kilometer up this climb to hold off i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo, the chase group, and the peloton.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/19_zps9a2974fd.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo gets a well deserved 2nd place coming in 22 seconds
behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/20_zps940c8d6d.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton is trying to hold off i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Efimkin for the final podium spot while you can just pick out the baby blue jersey of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae in the background.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/21_zpsab41c9ad.jpg

And it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Anton making it two Spaniard's on the podium coming in 1 minute after i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano finished. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Efimkin takes 4th over an impressive climb by
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Lloyd and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Soler. The Colombian however just loses contact of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Lloyd at the finish and sees an extra 14 seconds slip away.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/22_zps20b3e7e5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Taaramae sprints like crazy to save as much time as possible and just beats i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Broco for 7th on the line. 9th goes to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Pozzovivo and finishing the top 10 is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Iglinski.

i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j335/mresuperstar2/Man-Game/Reports/Clasica%20a%20Quetzaltenango/Stage%201/23_zps471fb374.jpg

And then it's the rest of the favourites, 69 riders finish in the peloton even though i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Vueling and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Bouygues put all their pieces up front to chase the majority of the climb. They all end up losing 1'58" to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano after the bonus seconds are added. Which means we should see the top favourites attack tomorrow as they played it rather safe today.
