The longest stage of the tour is on day 1 but it's still just 107.5kms. The stage starts with a small circuit around Salcaja before heading up Cumbre de Alaska. It's over 15kms long but averages a steady gradient of 4.5% making it the easiest climb we will see over the next three days.
The favourites are none other than the best 3 climbers in the division
facing off against each other for the first time this season -
Dekker, Taaramae, and Alarcon.
We are already 30kms in and it looks like we have finally have a solid breakaway after Vueling Airlines and Bouygues Telecom pulled numerous attempts back as they were too many riders for their liking. Teams that were present in those attempts that didn't make the current breakaway were HTC, CSC, Oz, ING, Cisco, and Prio. Everybody wanted in but only 4 did.
Meier
Kastrantas
Broco
Chernetskiy
The sprint points don't mean much in a race like this except for few extra dollars to do some shopping after the stage so the Canadian Meier will come home with some nice Guatemalan souvenirs.
Broco takes the 2nd sprint. 34kms to go, 2'40" advantage over the peloton
lead by Vueling Airlines and Bouygues Telecom.
Huge move with 22kms to go right before the start of the climb. Attacks by -
Nazaret
Efimkin
Lloyd
Anton
The breakaway is two minutes up the road.
But Bouygues Telecom is all over it and isn't going to let that go clear.
Another move by Nazaret triggers Anton again along with Castano. The climb is still ahead.
As that move fails as well we have finally reach the climb.
So that just means more attacks!
Cataldo
Efimkin
Anton
Castano
Soler
The breakaway is now in sight as well.
Cataldo and Castano reach the breakaway while Lloyd joins
Efimkin, Anton, and Soler in group two. Bouygues Telecom is still leading the peloton up the climb.
Castano and Broco are now your leaders as they ride away from
Cataldo and the rest of the breakaway. 9kms still to go however.
Chernetskiy gets shuffled from the breakaway back to peloton. The second group is still out in front of the Bouygues Telecom chase which still has 76 riders in the peloton. Down to 7.5kms to go. Castano is starting to look really dangerous.
5kms to go and Castano can look back and only see Cataldo. Race radio is saying the gap is around 1'30" to the chase group and 2'00" to the peloton.
5kms to go for the peloton now and you can't say Dekker and Taaramae don't have any support. All their helpers are pulling hard but can't seem to close the gap. They now have their sights on Meier and Kastrantas slipping back after being in the breakaway all day.
We have reached the snow. Cataldo is closing in on Castano. Broco is third on the road being chased down by Lloyd, Anton, Efimkin, and Soler. Then it's the peloton where all the favourites should be getting ready for an attack anytime now.
Castano is now at the banner! The favourites in the peloton have yet to attack. Has old veteran pulled off a stunning victory?
Cataldo can see the man to beat but both are too tired to sprint.
While it's Anton leading the chase group under the banner for what looks like the battle for third. Broco is just hanging on to this group.
Taatamae finally realizes his teammates aren't closing down the gap as fast as he wants so he attacks/sprints after the chase group, but it's too late to catch this guy...
Carlos Castano with a huge win! He attacked at the right moment and fought every kilometer up this climb to hold off Cataldo, the chase group, and the peloton.
Cataldo gets a well deserved 2nd place coming in 22 seconds
behind Castano.
Anton is trying to hold off Efimkin for the final podium spot while you can just pick out the baby blue jersey of Taaramae in the background.
And it is Anton making it two Spaniard's on the podium coming in 1 minute after Castano finished. Efimkin takes 4th over an impressive climb by
Lloyd and Soler. The Colombian however just loses contact of Lloyd at the finish and sees an extra 14 seconds slip away.
Taaramae sprints like crazy to save as much time as possible and just beats Broco for 7th on the line. 9th goes to Pozzovivo and finishing the top 10 is Iglinski.
And then it's the rest of the favourites, 69 riders finish in the peloton even though Vueling and Bouygues put all their pieces up front to chase the majority of the climb. They all end up losing 1'58" to Castano after the bonus seconds are added. Which means we should see the top favourites attack tomorrow as they played it rather safe today.
